Will this work in a Dell Inspiron 15R?

This should work just fine. It is a SATA drive and is a 2.5 inch. there shouldn't be any issues. The one I just got was for a different Inspiron model but loaded with no issues.

My Toshiba A25-S279 laptop has a Western Digital Scorpio HD (WD2500BEVE) which has just failed. I would like to replace it with a WD 2500BEKT which is a faster drive, but the connecting pins may not be the same. I am not able to see the pins in the online images. My existing drive has two rows of 24 pins.
Does anyone know if it will fit?

WD2500BEVE is PATA
WD2500BEKT is SATA

so the connectors would not be the same; 
(since newegg isn't allowing me to post pics of the connectors)

Does this drive require some sort of external power aside from the sata cable?

This drive will slide right in to the slot of the hard drive your replacing.  Make sure that the specs match your computer. Do you have SATA or ATA?  Measure the length, width and depth of existing hard drive to make sure it will fit. Most laptops have an outer bracket around the hard drive. Be sure to take that off before measuring. The hard drive slides in to a SATA connection which provides power and data linkage.

This is a bare drive. No case, no caddy, slides, or bracket. No cable and no screws. If you need these things they would have to be obtained separately. It works very well as a replacement drive using hardware already present in the computer.

I am not an expert . 7200Rpm should be no problem  .  infact i do not know what was in mine before . hard drive was missing when i got it
