Is this a wd factory re-furb/ I have bought re-furb drives before and they where total junk?

Yes, they are refurbished from Western Digital... the label on the top right corner of the drive has the wording "Recertified" printed on it.  I have my refurbished drive for 5 months now and it is still going strong.  Here's a quote from WD warranty page in regard of recertified drives:

Recertified Products

WD recertified products may consist of customer return units and may be repaired. All products are tested and determined to meet WD's stringent quality standards before they are sold as recertified. Please note that some recertified items may have marks, scratches, or other slight signs of wear.

All recertified products carry manufacturer's limited warranty of 6 months.

Will This Fit In a Asus K52S ?

Yes it will fit and work with this. Make sure you have created a recovery Disks for this laptop if not and the current drive is bad just call Asus and order some recovery Disks. I f the current drive is good and you have not created a recovery Disk please do so. Very important.
On the other hand you can buy a SSD drive and Newegg have some good bargains. This will make the laptop must faster. I hope this answers your question
