Question 1

I'm looking to replace a failed hard drive in a WD NAS.  My existing drive is model WD2002FYPS-02W3B1 and I'm aware that the NAS is picky as to what drives it accepts.

What is the full model number of this drive?

This HD did not work in my WD NAS (Sentinel) and had to be returned. There is a VERY SMALL list of comparable drives for these systems. If you call WD Sentinel support they will tell you what will and wont work. Also if you bought it with a NAS, the NAS typically have a 3-year warranty, but the drives inside have a 5-year warranty (just FYI).

Question 2

I'll need a full part number specification including suffix in order to check compatibility with my WD NAS system?  Plz advice.

At least for the WD DX4000 NAS system I have, what you say is very important.  I tried buying an HD with apparently the same part number, but the suffix characters were not right.  My NAS system rejected it completely!  Very frustrating.
I strongly suggest you contact WD Support and ask them to tell you the complete WD part numbers that will work.  NewEgg won't like the rest of my recommendation, but what I do just to avoid any messing about, I enter a support ticket requesting a WD replacement drive for my existing drive,  WD Support enters the order and charges you for the new drive.  VERY IMPORTANT, support people check the SN of the faulty drive you have and if it is still in warranty, they send a new one free.  Of course, you have to send back the faulty drive, but you can use the package the new one comes in for the return.  I've done this twice with drives that turned out to be in warranty.  Nat

Question 3

Title says 2 TB, picture shows 2 TB, but specifications say 1 TB.  Which is it?

When we purchased this drive in 2016 as a replacement hard drive, we were replacing by the part number. The drive we were replacing was a 2TB drive, and this one came in as a 2TB drive as well. Both the old and the new hard drives had the same part number.

Question 4

I did a search for hybrid hard drives and this came up, but there is no listing of the NAND capacity (if any).

is this indeed a hybrid drive with flash (solid state) cache storage?  is the 64mb of cache NANDflash and not RAM?

Hi Chris,

This is not a hybrid drive. This is a server-grade SATA drive traditional platter/pin. RE4 is used in commercial applications that requires 99-100% uptime (server environments). As the IT MGR at a corporation I buy these for our servers but over the years have started purchasing these for home use. They are by far superior to WD Blue (standard home), Green (power saving, low rpm), Red (NAS rated), Purple drives (surveillance) or their manufacturer equivalents.

I would suggest going with an SSD for your boot drive and then using separate SATA drive(s) for storage rather than partitioning a hybrid drive.

Keep in mind that RE4 (was their flagship enterprise drive) is an older version of WD's expanded selection of enterprise grade drives. This means that the RE4 you see here from 3rd party retailers generally tends to be 'new old' stock meaning they pulled these drives from unused servers and sold them separately. Also meaning they are no longer under warranty or are close to warranty expiration and hence why they are cheaper than the new gen drives.

If you do go with an RE4 from a 3rd party, ask if it a drive pull or new old stock. Also, when you receive your drive or any drive for that matter, open WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics and 'Run Diagnostics' on it in 'Extended Test' to verify the drive does not have errors outside the recommended tolerance level it is rated for. This takes a few hours but can weed out bad drives that would cause you to lose data later due to being faulty. Hold them accountable for the drives you purchase if they are faulty.
