Why would someone choose a full sized 1080 card over this smaller form factor if the stats are similar/equivalent?

Space is certainly a concern if you're doing a micro atx or mini itx and this card is perfect for those builds, but if you have say a mid tower with ATX motherboard I would personally use a full sized 1080.

I had 4 of these cards and while the performance is definitely impressive for such a small card they run hot so you'll need a lot of ventilation in your case to keep it cool, especially if you're gaming. Although I've found that most of the Zotac run on the hot side.

I ended up with the EVGA 1080Ti Black edition card. It ran a lot cooler and had more performance and now I don't have to worry about upgrading to do multi tasking, video work, gaming, etc. Hope this helps

Will this work in a regular build? I see comments from people that purchased it specifically for mini builds. I have an average desk top and am looking to increase my render time on 3D imaging.

It's the standard 1080 chip in a smaller body.  Cooling is compromised and the novel design makes in more expensive than the same chip in a typical build, but it can squeeze into a shoe box.  If you have the extra space of a full tower, you will get a better value buying a physically larger GPU.  The PCI connector fits the 16x slot found on virtually all modern motherboards; it will compatible with your motherboard, ATX, mATX, or ITX, unless it is truly ancient.

Ideally, how long will it take before this video card starts having issues keeping up with the frames in AAA games on 1080p? I need a rough number 1-2 years? Longer?

On 1080p? You've got a while before it starts falling off there. It can do some 4K gaming now, and kills it in 1440p. For 1080p, I think you've got 3-4 years of life before you start turning down settings.

is this compatible with Alienware 17r3 laptop?

I've had these in a normal mid tower desktop so it's very doubtful this will fit inside any laptop. It's not designed for laptops and it needs good ventilation to keep from overheating but they do make those external graphics card cases that you can connect to a laptop. It would work in that type of configuration.

Will I have to upgrade my cpu? I have a I5 6500.

if your just playing  games and not trying to stream. then no you don't need to upgrade your CPU.
You Should be fine for another year

what is the maximum resolution this supports?

I use it with a 2k ultrawide 3440 X 1440 monitor, but I have also connected it to my 4k UHD TV no problems. Although 4k gaming is asking a bit too much of this card on high settings.

does this need two 8pin connectors or one?

I did not order this 1080 but it seems to be 1 only which is different then all the other 1080's I have bought. If you look at the pictures under overview from newegg site there is an overhead view of the card where you can see the 1 connector. (the LED lit picture)

How loud are the fans and how hot does it get?

no too loud , actually very quiet ..although I wish the fans would stop at idle so they would last forever .. I bought mine a year ago ..maybe they have  the stop fan bios in the newer ones .I dont know..  temps are very good though for a small card .. I get 80C max in Doom 2016 online matches .. you hear the gentle whirring of the fans in that title and the 80C max..   good card I wish I have the 1080 ti mini
