5 out of 5 eggsEverything a hard drive needs to be

Pros: Fast, quiet, and trouble-free

Cons: None

Overall Review: You know what you're getting in terms of capacity, so hard drive reviews are all about reliability, speed and noise. I had no problems with any of this. It was successfully installed into a 2008 Macbook Pro.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid 2.5" drive in HTPC/Gaming PC

Pros: This drive is paired with a primary 256GB Crucial M4 SSD in my HTPC/Gaming PC. The WD drive works well. Read/write speeds are typical for a 3GB/sec drive, and it is pretty quiet to boot. 7200 RPM speed certainly helps as opposed to the 5400 RPM version. Recommended!

5 out of 5 eggsFast and quiet

Pros: Fast and quiet. Not too hot. Tons of space

Cons: Not 7mm height

Overall Review: I got this for my wife's laptop and it's worked without any problems. We leave the laptop on most of the time and it runs quiet fast and reasonably cool.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: Fast 7200 RPM, large capacity, great price, and best of all no bad sectors. I performed a complete surface scan with WD Diagnostics prior to install and drive cloning (since I have been burned before by using a bad drive before testing it). Used this to replace a 3 year old WD320 Gb that was going bad. Really pleased with the performance.

Cons: This drive is Advanced Format, meaning it has 4096 byte sectors instead of the older 512 byte sectors. Not a con in the true sense, just wanted to point out that if you clone a Win Vista partition from a non-AF drive to an AF drive you will need to install a MS hotfix. However, you cannot patch your system AFTER it has been cloned (the people at MS can be real smart sometimes).

Overall Review: if you are migrating a Windows system from a non-AF to an AF drive then apply this hotfix PRIOR to cloning (search kb2470478 on Microsoft support site):

5 out of 5 eggsGreat PS3 Drive Upgrade

Pros: Worked out of the box perfectly for a PS3 install.
Formatted to right around 700GB.
Snappy response times.
Lots of space for a good price.

Cons: None yet.

Overall Review: I had been looking for a drive upgrade for my PS3 (backward-compatible model) for a while, and had been weighing options between SSD, SSD hybrid, and normal HD. I read a number of reviews about this drive, including some from other PS3 owners that reported good results installing this drive. I also had a terrifically easy time.

For others looking to upgrade their PS3 drive:
My 80GB PS3 drive was 73GB full, and the hardest part of the upgrade was formatting a 160GB external drive as FAT32 to do the system backup. I used Easus Partition Manager - Home Edition on a Win7x64 box.

Backup from the PS3 took approximately 5 hours. Faster external drives might improve the speed. Mine is old.

You'll need a small phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws on the PS3 and drive cage. Secure the new drive in the cage, reinstall it in the PS3, power it up.

Start the restore (reformatting the drive), and wait about 90 minutes. One more reboot, and voila, approx. 700GB of usable PS3 space.

5 out of 5 eggsSpeedy!

Pros: -Relatively fast
-Doesn't destroy battery life
-Very high capacity
-Long warranty

Cons: -Noticeable impact on battery life
-Hotter and louder (though by no means loud)

Overall Review: The Scorpio can run circles around my Macbook Pro's old 5400rpm Hitachi drive. The mix of SATA 3gb/s, 7200rpm, and double the cache has given my laptop noticeable pep in its step. So far it has run without a hitch, and the 5-year warranty should cover any problems that may arise. One of my few qualms is that the audible clicking sound my Hitachi drive made when the drive spindle locked into a safe position doesn't happen anymore, and there's no observable indication that the hard drive engages in any free-fall protection. That doesn't mean it isn't happening, though, so it's really a non-issue. The drive does run a bit warmer than my previous drive, though it hasn't gotten hot enough to be uncomfortable. Also, while I can't feel any vibration, the drive does emit enough noise to be noticed in quiet environments. Overall I'm very pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgraded my PS3

Pros: Bought this drive to upgrade my 80GB PS3. Zero issues with upgrade. Immediately added another 20GB of downloads from the PSN today after the backup and restore process was entirely finished.

Cons: Didn't run the drive through any type of tests

Overall Review: For the nonretail packaging it was pretty good. Was shipped inside anti-static bag wrapped in 3 - 4 layers of bubble wrap, enclosed in a tight fitting box. Was then packed into another box with 2 other boxes for items i purchased and all free space in the overall box was stuffed firmly with packing paper.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Deal!

Pros: With this drive, my laptop feels almost as fast as my desktop, with lots more storage space than the average laptop.

Cons: Nothing to report. Move along, please.

Overall Review: It is an Advanced Format Drive (4k sector size instead of 512 bytes), so make sure you use a current OS that can handle it, and not 10-year old Windows XP.

5 out of 5 eggsVery fast drive

Pros: I bought this to replace the 320GB drive in my Macbook Pro. The cloning of the drive and the install went smoothly - probably 45 minutes in all - most of that time copying the data from the old to the new drive. This drive fits perfectly with the same dimensions as the old drive. I run both Snow leopard and Parallels with Windows 7 and they both cloned perfectly onto the new drive. Price was right, Newegg packed the drive well in bubble wrap. I'm happy.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsnice while it lasted

Pros: Fast, highest capacity for 7200 RPM drives at this time

Cons: Started having defects a little more than a year after frequent use (slowed down a lot, bad sectors, clicking)

Overall Review: WD product registration and RMA process is one of the easiest, no hassle systems I've used.

Pay close attention to drive performance & characteristics. Don't delay in determining a drive failure or you risk losing your data.

I suspected mine going downhill when I heard occasional clicks. A Crystal Disk Mark benchmark compared to when I first bought the drive showed a huge decrease in performance despite having defragmented the drive. A month later, playing videos and even music (small file streams) would seem to stutter at random times for only a second or 2. What sealed the deal was that Windows automatically scanned the drive for errors one day.

I used this drive as a data drive (redirected entire user profile) in a laptop with Free Fall Protection enabled.

5 out of 5 eggshdd upgrade mac osx

Pros: I upgrade my hdd on my macbook pro. To do this I connected the drive using a NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Adapter. I then reformatted the drive using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Under Partition in Disk Utility select "Options" and then select GUID Partition Table. I then used Carbon Copy Cloner naming my Macintosh HD as the source disk and the new (larger) USB disk as the target disk and ran CCC. Then I followed the hardware installation instructions and successfully installed my new larger HDD.

Cons: none.

Overall Review: No real cons, just work through the above if you are running Mac OSX. The GUID Partition Table option is key.

5 out of 5 eggsawesome A++

Pros: Upgraded from a 320gb wd scorpio black into a macbook and runs just as well as the previous, fyi i had the other for over 2 yrs and not one problem so buying this w/ confidense and so far all expectation met.. i used the built in windows image backup utility to create an image on an external drive and reinstalled macosx and windows in bootcamp mode, gave it 600gb of space and restored my image using the windows install cd,, everything worked flawlessly.. i did have to extend the partition using this method in disk management under the windows install to get the extra space.. i love this drive and now i have pleny of more room for whatever!!! i can tell you all day long how awesome this drive is and let me tell you its worth every penny.. scorpio black for the win!

Cons: absolutely NONE, NOTTA

Overall Review: If you are unsure, dont be, this is hands down imo one of the best laptop drives you can buy.. did i mention these 7200rpm drives fly.. i dont think i did but it does, just another reason of many to buy one.. i did have to upgrade to a bigger external drive now to handle my windows image =-)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent PS3 Upgrade

Pros: Fast drive, very simple, problem-free installation.

Cons: None

Overall Review: I upggraded a PS3 Phat 60GB Playstation for about $85. Been over four weeks now and so far, so good. Drive is fast, quiet and was easily recognized and formatted. If you're backing up your old PS3 drive, remember to use a third-party program to format the usb backup drive using FAT32. My drive was manufactured in 7/12. Hopefully this post-flood drive will not have problems, but it does have that 5 year warranty. Over the years, I'v installed about 8 WD hard drives. I've never had a problem with the Raptor or black series.

5 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital!

Pros: It's Western Digital!
Scorpio Black catchy title
7200 RPM. Very fast!
Did a fresh install of Windows 7 and it works great!
DId I mention it was western digital?!

Cons: Well, if anything, it was just a bit nerve wracking to see that it was just a bare drive but nothing worth knocking an egg off of!

Overall Review: My original hard drive was actually a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 5400 RPM 320GB. See, now Acer knew how to build their laptops with the right brand of hard drive so I kept this one as my back up and also bought a portable enclosure for it to go in. I originally wanted to just clone the hard drive and even when I did that, I saw a huge difference and fell in love with this new, faster hard drive. I wanted to get the most out of this baby so I just did a fresh Windows install and I'm seeing more oomph in it! Windows boots up alot better and so do my programs and games. Love this new hard drive.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what the doctor ordered.

Pros: Fast, HUGE capacity

Cons: Eh.. nothing really so far

Overall Review: Was thinking about going with an SSD for my boot drive (latpop w/ 2 drive slots) And after careful consideration of my budget (I'm not bill gates) I decided that a faster RPM hard drive would be better. I'm glad I chose it, lots of space (now to backup all the files I tearfully deleted) and fast enough for my needs. Definitely not worth losing hundreds of GB and dollars for a bit of a speed boost.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade from 5400rpm

Pros: Reliable. I've used Western Digital notebook drives in past machines, so I knew what I was getting into. A solid, dependable notebook HDD is exactly what I got.
A nice upgrade (and not insignificant) from the 500GB/5400 rpm that comes with the 2011 15.4" MacBook Pro (2.2Ghz i7 / AMD6750)

Cons: None, so far.

Overall Review: I had tried Seagate's Momentus XT hybrid in a 13.3" MBP. I didn't quite see the performance gains I had hoped. (It may be better on Windows). I had considered an SSD for this, but the reviews made their performance sound somewhat inconsistent and questionable. That's why I stuck with Western Dig Scorpio Black.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for fat PS3 HDD replacement

Pros: Bought it two months or so ago when it was on sale and so far it works fine. Using it as a replace for my fat PS3's HDD and I have no complaints about it.

Cons: Only one per customer.

Overall Review: For anyone one else willing to buy this for a replace hdd for their PS3, go for it. It fits the tray nicely, I've had no problems with playing music nor videos (or games), worth every dollar I had to spend (which was around $90 because of the sale).

5 out of 5 eggsNice Laptop HDD

Pros: It's a standard form factor 2.5" drive for any laptop. SATA II with 7200rpm gives desktop performance. Very quiet and nearly vibration free. Low power consumption, similar to a 5400rpm drive.

Cons: none really so far

Overall Review: I bought this disk to replace the 5400rpm disk that came with a new laptop. I cloned the OEM drive over to this new drive, swapped them and the difference in speed was quite noticable. I haven't really noticed if the run-time on battery is any shorter.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Good Good

Pros: The power consumption is not as high as the last 7200rpm 500gb laptop drive i purchased a couple years ago. Bar none the black drives are great. in xbench, this improved my scores an average 20% across the board in the disk test section. This is compared to a 5400 drive. my battery had a max runtime of 7/8 hrs and an average of 4/5 before. Now with the black it is 5/6 max and 3/4 average. Not bad IMO. -2011 Macbook Pro 17" i7-

Cons: its not a spaceship. lol,, but really.... Now today newegg is selling the same drive for 25$ less that what I purchased it for.. jeeeezzzzz dont you love that !!!

Overall Review: It is as it says and does what it says. I trust WD over other brands through experience. none of my WD drives have failed. I have had 2 Seagate's with inconsistencies and bad sectors. I have about 10 hard drives running right now, and I really beat these things up. The integrity of my data means alot to me and my clients.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat buy for ps3

Pros: Massive space, compatable with ps3 right out the box, no reformatting needed.

Cons: I can only use one in the ps3 at a time

Overall Review: Great for a ps3 memory upgrade. If your system is up to date all you have to do is replace the old one and wait about 20 min for the ps3 to install the system on the drive and off you go.

5 out of 5 eggsSo...about that 2009 MBP...

Pros: Update to my review from 3/17/2011:

It's still a nice, big, fat 750gb of SATA happiness that came packaged in bubble wrap (alas, without lollipops), but...

Cons: I will gladly eat crow when I deserve it. I knew I was tempting fate when I wrote my original review so early in my ownership cycle, but that's what a few too many energy drinks will do for ya. Anyways...so literally from the moment I wrote that review, it's been sporadic (and just really strange) instability issues - only one beach ball but quite a few startup hangs and other just weird goings-ons: an update and a couple installs failed, rEFIt wouldn't bless even by using Sudo, the bootcamp partition decided to stop booting when using the option key, etc, etc. I clean installed twice, but could never pin down any specific cause(s) on the OS/application end. So, I've finally thrown in the towel and am back to the stock 500gb and everything seems to be back to normal. Note that although I read all about the EFI downgrade stuff, I'm skipping that on principle at least for now...

Overall Review: I don't blame WD for this issue at all since the drive itself is solid (thus the 5 eggs again), but I wanted to clarify my experience for any other MBP owners considering this purchase (remember, mine's a mid-2009; your model may be just fine based on earlier reviews). In the end, I don't plan on RMA'ing it since I purchased knowing the risk of incompatibility (plus I always planned on using one as an external drive to offload imovie videos and projects).

5 out of 5 eggsFirst PS3 review

Pros: Noticeably faster than my WD6400BEVT (640gb from Western Digital).
Don't be fooled by what anyone else says, this FITS right on a Launch 60gb PS3 Hard drive cage.

So glad I bought this, worth the money in waiting times for GT5 and more storage!

Cons: Nothing

Overall Review: I was cautious about going 7200rpm as they apparently generate more heat, but these drives aren't any hotter compared to the Caviar Blue's. One thing to note the hard drive is on opposite sides of where most of the heat is generated.

So glad I bought this, worth the money in waiting times for GT5 and more storage!

Pros: Fast drive with plenty of space.

Cons: Got an okay deal at 69 buckaros.

Pros: I will keep this short and sweet. I've owned the drive for about 2 years and picked it up on newegg. It was on sell and still is a fast drive with decent cache. I upgraded my old gaming laptop drive in my Asus and it still works without a hitch. Great Product!!!

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns warm, but worth it!

Pros: Fast (faster than almost any other non-SSD laptop drive), high capacity, seems solid so far.

Cons: The only possible cons are that it runs a little warm (can definitely feel it when resting my wrist above it), and that it likely consumes a little more power than a lower-performance drive. Of course, both of those are more-or-less unavoidable results of it being straight-up better than those lower-performance drives.

Overall Review: Bought this as a replacement HDD for my Acer Aspire V3-571G-6622, and I have no regrets whatsoever.

But if you clone another HDD onto this drive (as I did), then make sure to download WD's Acronis Align software to take advantage of the advanced formatting of this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSnappier after replacing a laptop's 120GB 5400RPM

Pros: No problems sliding this new drive in place of the laptop's old smaller drive. A faster spinning drive makes the laptop more snappy. Not any noisier than the old slower drive (can't hear a difference). Installation went flawless: No physical size or connector differences between this new WDC drive to the old HGST (Hitachi) for the old drive.

Cons: Just a note: Since others have mentioned premature disk death, and because this will be my first long-time use of a 2.5" hard disk, I'll install some monitoring software (e.g., free Acronis Drive Monitor) to check the health of the hard disk. If it lasts past the 9-month pregancy period then it'll last for 5-6 years and I won't need to waste memory and CPU cycles to monitor a drive that has proven itself. Since hard disks ALWAYS die (the question is when, not if), I have external drives to which I schedule regular backups. Hopefully I don't encounter a drive death but they do happen regardless of what brand and model you buy.

The only real 'con' that I encountered was having to get a new driver for my old laptop (see Other Thoughts). That's not a fault with the drive but something other users might consider researching before swapping in a MUCH larger hard disk than what's already in the machine. It caught me by surprise simply because I didn't expect even 6-year old drivers to have a problem with a 750GB drive.

Because this is a faster spinning drive, it may generate more heat (mostly when continuously accessed, not from just spinning faster). The WDC blue and green drives spin at 5400 RPM (as does the HGST old drive this one replaced) because manufacturers need to reduce heat as much as possible for such tightly packed components. Since this laptop is to replace a dead desktop, it will sit permanently on my desk, so I got a cooler stand with 2 80mm fans to help cool the laptop. However, even without using the fans, I haven't noticed elevated temperatures in the laptop - but I also haven't done a lot that would severely tax the faster spinning new hard disk, like huge-file video file conversion.

Overall Review: To clone my old drive onto the new drive, it must first be removed from the laptop and accessed as an external drive. Then clone from the external [old] drive onto the newly installed bigger drive. Direct cloning would mean a large portion of the new hard disk would be unusable until repartitioned (create a partition in the unallocated space or resize the cloned partition). This was easy using Acronis True Image (with plus pack) which clones and then resizes. I researched this cloning procedure before replacing the drive. Those that tried cloning from the old drive (still in the laptop) to an external drive (the new drive) and then trying to swap in the new drive encountered failures. Has to be the other way around: old drive as external cloned to new drive installed in laptop.

Created 250GB OS partition (cloned from old now external 120GB drive) and used rest for Acronis Secure Zone to store backups. Keeping the old drive as-is (no writes to it) in the Vantec enclosure as a backup for now in case the new drive dies.

I did have to do one thing with my 6-year old Compaq laptop: after upping to the 750GB WDC drive, a new RAID driver was needed from Compaq. I don't RAID anything but this driver is used for non-RAID hardware file I/O. After installing the new big drive, I got errors in Windows Live Mail, Outlook, and some other apps that pointed to problems with file access. Installing the new HP driver fixed those problems. After encountering the WLM database problem, a Google search found a forum post noting the required newer driver and it worked like a charm.

I don't bother spinning down hard disks. Not interested in the little bit of energy saved versus the electrical fatigue caused by the surge current to spin up the platters. Hard drives have just barely capable motors to spin up the platters and I have no desire to stress on spinup just to save a few pennies a year on electricity. So this drive will remain spinning 24x7. That does NOT mean the drive is always hot. An always spinning hard disk generates very little additional heat. It's constant accessing that will make it hot, like when doing a sector-by-sector cloning of the drive. Using the drive makes it hot. Leaving it spin but not accessed generates little heat, severely reduces thermal expansion (mechanical stress), and eliminate surge current on spinup (electrical stress).

So far, this 7200 RPM drive is not producing more heat than did the old 5400 RPM drive - but access is definitely quicker.

5 out of 5 eggsnice big and fast laptop replacment

Pros: I got a used Dell laptop for my nephew which was very nice but only had a 60GB 5400 RPM drive. This drive was more than 10X the space, faster, and had a bigger cache. The laptop ran noticeably faster with this drive.
This is the largest drive available when I bought it that would fit. There are larger capacity 2.5" drives, but if you check the dimensions many are a bit thicker than this and will not fit.

Cons: The faster drive will drain the laptops battery faster, but is worth it for more space and faster operation.

Overall Review: Over the years I have only had one WD drive fail on me. Although the quoted turn-around time for warranty repairs is weeks, when I sent a bad one in I had the replacement in 3 days.

3 out of 5 eggsProblems after 5 weeks

Pros: Worked as advertised, good price for the capacity, and no problems with installation.

Cons: Started getting I/O errors after about 5 weeks of use. When I registered the drive with WD they indicate that it's outside the region in which it originally shipped.

Overall Review: Bought the drive to install in a 2010 MacBook, which went without a glitch. Worked fine for the first month, then the machine slowed to a crawl, and failed to reboot, spitting I/O errors on the console. Disk Utility and TechTool report volume errors. I will try to repair and try reformatting if necessary, but suspect that I'll need an RMA from WD.

Setting up for a potential RMA, I typed the serial number of the drive into WD's registration tool. It tells me that the drive is out of region (i.e. it originally shipped somewhere outside North America). According to WD I should still be able to RMA, but I'm limited to one out of region RMA per year. Where did NewEgg get these drives??

2 out of 5 eggsScorpio Black

Pros: -Fast
-Reasonable Price

Cons: -Died in 15 months

Overall Review: Great drive while it lasted. Installed as a secondary data drive in an Alienware M18x R1. I wouldn't recommend using it on any important files without a rock solid backup plan.

What happened to drives that last 5-10 years? Especially when they don't have to do much but load occasional games and ISO's?

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice

Pros: Fast, stable, quiet, efficient.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Installed this drive as an upgrade in my 2011 MacBook Pro 15" that shipped with a 500GB, 5400 RPM, OEM drive. Battery life seems to be pretty close to the OEM unit but with noticeably faster performance. Nice and quiet too.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome upgrade on EEEpc 1005ha

Pros: Fast linear speed, really good random i/o performance too
Quiet accessing, not too much whirring noise.
Power Efficient

Cons: Access times are not excellent. Around ~15.7ms average access time , minus 4.16ms rotational latency equates to ~11.5ms seek time.
It is a good access time, but not excellent.

The noise of the heads parking to reduce air drag during idle times are loud. Could be made quieter

Overall Review: I installed a Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB 7200RPM laptop drive into my ASUS EEE 1005ha netbook and the speed increase is drastic. I can safely say that the i/o bottleneck is removed from the computer in day to day tasks (it doesn't take much with an Intel Atom).
I used hddscan to query the hard drive temperature and it only runs a few degrees warmer than the 160GB 5400RPM 1-platter drive that came with the computer.

The whole myth about 7200RPM laptop drives running hot in netbooks is totally false. I will never buy anoth 5400RPM laptop drive in my live, they are well worth it.

The Scorpio Black is a great drive and the only real downside is that the access times are not amazing, but then again, the noise emitted when seeking might be higher if they had made it faster. But it is fine because the drive is the top dog with performance versus all other laptop drives right now (besides Seagate's hybrid drive).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Large Space for a laptop drive.
Quiet
FAST

Cons: None so far

Overall Review: I bought this drive to replace the 5400 speed drive that came with my new 15" macbook pro. It was a snap to install and works fantastic. Huge speed increase. One note on Newegg overnight shipping...you won't get it overnight if you order late in the day unless you pay not only for overnight, but for expidited handling...I didn't see that little note. Otherwise, the packing was excellent and the drive arrived in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, requires boot rom tweaks

Pros: Fast - up to 90MB/s on my 2009 MBP

Cons: Windows 7 and XP require some sort of patch to use this thing - links are on the actual drive.

my 2009 MBP required a 1.6 boot room downgrade to work properly. before that, I got a ton of beachballs - very slow

seens a bit power hungry. huh, oh well.

Overall Review: My experience with Apple support left much to be desired. If you have a 2009 pro, skip them and download the EFI update yourself. It's fairly painless and quick. I went to an apple store, described the problem and the preferred solution, and they spent 40 minutes verifying that I wasn't a muppet, then said that they officially couldn't do anything.

5 out of 5 eggschimichanga

Pros: This drive is quiet, fast and cool in my ThinkPad T410. I didn't have any trouble with the 4K "Advanced Format" sectors (I run Linux, so gdisk was all I needed).

Cons: The first one I ordered from Newegg made a "grinding" noise during spin-up and spin-down. Other than that, it sounded fine and seemed to work fine (although I never copied anything to it other than /dev/zero for a few GB).

I RMA'd it, and the drive I received as a replacement is just great. I was going to RMA through WD directly, but they were going to send a refurb, so I RMA'd through Newegg.

Overall Review: I knew what the WD Scorpio Black line could do, as this drive replaced my 500GB Scorpio Black (non-AF), which is now my backup drive. Very pleased with both.

This drive is not loud, nor does it produce any vibrations that I can even notice. I'm always interested by the people who claim it's loud or vibrates too much -- not sure what's wrong with their laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsPS3 Upgrade

Pros: I purchased this to upgrade my launch model 60 gig hard drive. Much faster than the stock 5400rpm. I was unsure which drive to use as there are so many different options and opinions out there. I am very pleased with this drive.

Cons: Still a little pricey for a 750 2.5" drive but you get what you pay for...

Overall Review: I have always had good luck with my WD drives in all my PC's. Segate and others, not so much... If your looking for a fast reliable drive for a ps3, look no further.

5 out of 5 eggsPlug and play in Mid '10 13" MacBookPro

Pros: Definitely faster booting and launching than any of the 5,400 RPM drives I've used. More so than I expected. Especially when running Parallels.

Installation into a Mid 2010 MacBookPro was painless, though moving 600GB takes a while.

Cons: Very slightly noisier (whoosh sound) and more vibration than the stock drive, but not annoyingly so. And I'm picky about these things.

Overall Review: For a short while I had a 12.5mm 1TB drive in the same MBP, but it vibrated worse than any drive I've ever used. I'm looking forward to a Scorpio Black 1TB.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Scorpio Black 750GB

Pros: I purchased this hard drive to replace a Toshiba hd (500GB 5400rpm). So far boot times have been notably faster and the drive is a lot quieter.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good

Pros: Very good. As Fast as my old HITACHI Travelstar 500GB 7200 RPM. Travelstar was actually quieter than Scorpio Black, but Travelstar makes some clinking noise. Scorpio Black makes no clinking noise.

Cons: Non

My first hard drive, TOSHIBA MK5055GSX 500GB 5400 RPM, is good as Travelstar. I don’t notice much speed difference. (TOSHIBA makes some clinking noise too.)

5 out of 5 eggsA Good Solid Performing HDD And Good Upgrade For A Laptop

Pros: I replaced a 250 GB HDD in my laptop with this device after my laptop warranty ended.
It has proven to be a reliable replacement. Works like it came OEM with the laptop.
Tripled my original storage capacity at a fair price. WD makes a good product.

Cons: Only wish I would have held out for a full TB HDD when the prices on them dropped.
But I still have plenty of storage, So not really a con on the product itself.

Overall Review: Somewhat of a challenge to install a HDD into a laptop as I had to take most of it apart to access the original drive.
If you take your time to research online tutorials, it can be done and put back together like new.
No major issues in getting it formatted and reinstalling the OS. A external optical drive is almost a necessity.
But with the manufacturer's back up/reinstallation disc and a lot of patience it can be done inexpensively.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for a notebook

Pros: Bought this back in Sept of 2013 to replace a 320 GB drive that was running out of room in my notebook. First drive started doing the "clicking" within a few weeks. Happily I had not committed any data to the drive yet, so replacing it just took some time. Drive has been solid since September. Running three OS on it (Kubuntu, OpenSUSE and Win7) on a Vostro 1500.

Cons: First drive died, but replacement was easy.

Overall Review: After a bad experience with another drive manufacturer, I've stayed with Western Digital ever since.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible quality control

Pros: This hard drive was fast when it worked, and Western Digital is great at replacing things.

Cons: High failure rates. I've had to return a hard drive for being faulty, and they replaced it with another faulty hard drive. Talk about terrible quality control.

Overall Review: Get your stuff together Western Digital, thus far I've experienced 100% failure rates from you on this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: +Price: Best buy I could find on a small budget.

I've been running this HDD for about 3 months now and I haven't had any problems yet, given I run my laptop 10-18 hours daily. I definitely would suggest this drive to anyone who needs some extra space in their laptop for a low budget. The 7200rpm makes a difference when dealing with more space when compared to a 5400rpm model. It is still fast at ~500gb used.

Cons: -speed: as expected, it's no SSD

Can't really think of anything else...

Overall Review: This is a value buy, not great but gets the job done. If that is what you are looking for, then this is a great upgrade.

5 out of 5 eggsFits PS3 Slim, Works Great

Pros: Faster spindle speed shiould slightly improve game loading times, and certainly sped up restore times (I backed up the existing 120GB PS3 drive first)

Cons: None so far

Overall Review: Bought this drive to replace the stock 120GB Toshiba drive that came in my PS3 slim model. It fits and works fine. Disregard the comments you may see that a 7200rpm drive will not work, or that it will generate too much heat. Do your homework when researching, and get the the facts. It can and will work just fine.

2 out of 5 eggsBe cautious.

Pros: This HDD is indeed faster than my previous 5400rpm drive that came with my laptop.

Cons: Loud noise and clicking sound.

Overall Review: This is my day 1 with this drive installed on my laptop. I've used it for about 40 minutes now, and I already heard 3 clicking sounds coming from the HDD. My old 5400 rpm drive never made that sound, and coming from my experience, any HDD that made this clicking sound were near dead and stopped working within 3 months. Now, I don't feel like storing any important data on this drive now.
Also, the noise coming from this drive is loud enough to cover my cpu fan noise. THAT IS RIDICULOUS.
I'm going to try to return this or at least replace it and see if the next one is any better.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD

Pros: Great HDD. Been using it for about 3 months now its a definite speed improvement over the 5400RPM that I had.

Cons: Very loud. Not sure if it's because it's spinning too much or just very bad at noise cancellation. The old HDD it replaced I never heard it running, except for it was terribly fragmented and that's when I could hear the head seeking. But this one, way loud even when idle.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: I installed this drive in a Thinkpad T60 that I use for music performance/production replacing the stock 5400rpm 60GB drive.

Worried about the reliability complaints, I did a full disk encryption on this drive to basically burn in every byte on the drive for about 24 hours. No errors.

7200 rpms gave me quite a speed boost from the original drive. Disk intensive tasks appear to be quite a bit more snappy. I won't say I'm as excited as a new SSD installer, but the speed boost is definitely noticeable.

The drive is quiet. During the encryption process, the drive was laying open on a table and was only audible when I bent my head down to listen to it. Installed, it is silent.

I found the image copy tool to be quite helpful. I typically use a tool like Clonezilla, but I found the downloadable tool to be simpler (but less flexible).

Cons: There is something odd about the formatting of this drive that requires a partition alignment tool. The alignment tool is only available to registered users (ok, I get that), and is really difficult and slow to download using the Java downloading helper. Look for the link on the download page that allows you to download the tool directly.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes its job

Pros: Fast and reliable.
Was a great value at the time I purchased it (March 2011, before the Thailand flood)

Cons: None so far for me.
At the time this review is being written(Dec 2011), the price is way high. Make a wise decision whether you need to buy a new HDD. You might want to wait for 6-12 months if you are not in a dire need to purchase now.

Overall Review: Bought it to replace HDD in my Dell XPS m1210 laptop. (a bit aged laptop, but still performs fairly well) Holds 3 separate partitions: NTFS for Windows 7 64bit, HFSJ for OS X 10.6.8, FAT32 for shared documents.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Drive is a noticeable improvement over the stock 5400rpm 320gig drive that came with my mid 2009 Macbook Pro. Everything is much snappier now, couldn't be happier. Used migration assistant and computer started up exactly the way it was before i turned it off to remove the hard drive just a little faster now. No noticeable vibration differences between the 5400 and this 7200rpm drive. Get it, you won't be disappointed!

Cons: Drive seems to run slightly warmer than the old drive, but given the performance gains, I really have no complaints.

Overall Review: If you have a unibody macbook pro, make sure you have a t6 torx screw driver handy. You will need it to remove the 4 chassis studs from the old drive to transfer them to the new one...

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive

Pros: Great Drive at a great price. Upgraded a Macbook Pro to 750GB from a 125GB SSD. Now it has some breathing room. This drive is what I expected and dose what I expect.

Cons: None yet.

Overall Review: I read all of the reviews prior to purchase. Therefore I am aware of the complaints regarding drives that are DOA. This is my thirteenth WD drive in four years and knock-on-wood none has failed me yet. Due to the nature of the work my business performs, all drive are replaced at or around 5 years of use. This may explain the lack of failures or it may be that Newegg has vastly improved its packaging/shipping procedure.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected in SOME ways

Pros: Fast, inexpensive, low vibration

Cons: Not as efficient as claimed

Overall Review: This was purchased to replace a prior upgrade to a MacBook Pro, the first edition 2.8 unibody 15". It had already been upgraded to a 500GB 7200rpm drive that died and was replaced with a refurb that doubled the vibration and was noisier than the cooling fans!

This WD drive is MUCH quieter, with very very little vibration. And PERFORMANCE IS FANTASTIC! Running XBench showed fantastic improvement in ALL metrics from the 500Gb/7200 it replaced. Speed and silence are a must for me, working in audio.

However, the increased performance comes at a price--power consumption. This drive consumes my notebook's battery much more quickly than the drive it replaces, and does not live up to the strong claims from the manufacturer that this drive is optimized to offer performance without a battery hit.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drive

Pros: Speedy, Direct Install. I have bought 2 of these and the installation is a breeze. Western Digital licenses a butchered version of Acronis to clone your drive. It basically does a linux style dd from within a live boot kernel, but all the config is done in windows with little user interaction. It works awesome. A monkey could do it, which makes technical people's lives easier.

The first drive has been in use almost a year, no issues. The second drive for about a week now.

Write speed and latency are very good.

Cons: Slightly higher power consumption than 5400rpm drives obviously.

Overall Review: I have bought two and will buy more of the same but probably larger capacity when these are filled.

The one I bought this week cost less than half of what I paid a year ago when it was the largest capacity 2.5" drive available on the market. Now they have 1TB drives but this is still second to the top of the line. I will upgrade when there are 2TB+ laptop drives available.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Hard Drive

Pros: Drive is Quiet. I have it in a Dell Studio XPS 1645.
and i hear the fan more than the drive. Used the Acronis True Image WD Edition from Western Digital to clone the stock drive and it worked flawlessly.

Cons: Non As of yet

Overall Review: Acronis True Image WD Edition Took 6 hours to clone from a 500 gig drive to this one.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome drive

Pros: As always WD rocks. Super fast laptop drive with a huge amount of storage space. WD has always provided a reliable drive and I intend to continue using them. I have never been disappointed with my WDs. Other drives yes but not WD.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I replaced a 640gb 5400rpm stock drive in an HP DV7-4165DX with this one. What a huge improvement. The stock drive will be put back in as a secondary drive though for expanded storage only.

4 out of 5 eggsGood But Noisy

Pros: This disk is fast, it is noticeably faster than a 5400 RPM disk, think of 20-30% faster load times for your apps, that's pretty close to nominal. The noise is "constant" in the sense that no head movements can be heard, and that makes it better than other disks that might have lower dB noise but that produce intermittent clicks when the head moves.

Cons: The noise level of this disk is undoubtedly higher than a 5400 RPM disk, so if you want a quiet disk you will be disappointed. If you work in a quiet environment you will be easily annoyed. Also, it has some vibrations, nothing unbearable, but then again something you don't notice on a slower disk. I need the extra space and value the extra speed, so I'm likely keeping it, but please don't believe WD's promises of a quiet disk, that's just not realistic for a 7200 RPM disk.

Overall Review: Upgrading from a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB 5400 RPM on a Lenovo laptop, there is no doubt this is a notch better disk, if you don't mind the extra noise and slight vibrations. Lenovo laptops mount the disk on front right side, and that makes it easy to notice noise and vibrations. Stayed with WD because of apparent better reliability, trying to keep away from disk failures. Would have gone SSD if at a comparable price level, but that's not yet the case.

5 out of 5 eggsNice drive

Pros: fast drive
750GB!!

Cons: runs a bit hot, make sure its well ventilated, although this should be obvious

Overall Review: Had it for about 7 months for my gaming notebook.
Drive performs well, no issues so far. Noticeably faster performance than with a Scorpio Blue. (which I had in there before) Definitely one to get.

Overall Review: Serious performance with awesome reliability!

5 out of 5 eggsGood deal, buy it

Pros: About as fast as your going to get with 7200 rpm 2.5 hard drive. At 750Gb the density is incredible. I routinely get bursts over e-sata of 110 mbs and lows of 70 mbs. Runs cool with no ventilation.

Cons: The Seagate is cheaper, quieter and not very noticeably slower. Unfortunately I have had more Seagate failures than WD.

5 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital Rocks

Pros: Excellent hard drive. Quite, smooth, large and far superior to my old 500GB 5,400 RPM drive. Data transfer is much faster, bench marks proved it, windows experience score jumped more than a full point. I have had several WD drives and they always deliver.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: I ended up buying apricot's data transfer cable and software for a smooth transition. It worked flawlessly.

5 out of 5 eggsFast drive

Pros: Fast with 7200 rpm speed
Fairly cool when operating
Great for a small HTPC

Cons: none yet

Overall Review: I have one of these installed in a miniPC, one of those ZOTAC boxes. The drive works well, doesn't get too hot and works much faster than the slower spinning HD's typically found in laptops or netbooks.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother great WD product!

Pros: Upgraded my 2011 15" Quadcore i7 Macbook Pro with this HD. Alot faster than the stock 500GB 5400RPM it replaced!

Cons: None!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive -BUT...-

Pros: Ok people, here is a review based on usage in a

mid 2010 Macbook Pro - 2.4ghz i5 - 8gb RAM hi-res screen

Original Mac hard drive = 320GB 5400RPM

Original Mac hard drive speed (AJA benchmark) = peak 55mb/s read -- 48mb/s write

WD Scorpio Black 750GB speed (same test) = peak 122mb/s read -- 97mb/s write

WD drive is much faster, better load time, file transfers, photoshop performance etc.

Cons: BATTERY LIFE!
The specs say "5400 RPM power consumption"
The original Mac hard drive must have been really low power because my battery meter use to hit 11+ hours under very light use, NOW it hits 8. I would say overall the new HDD has dropped my battery life about 20%.
Also, the drive is much louder than the original, it sounds almost like the fans are funning fast. There is no clicking or "usage" noise i can tell, just a wooshing sound.

Overall Review: Though my battery life is less, the performance of the drive makes up for it. The original drives are a bottleneck to the awesome performance of the i5 Macbook pro's.
Im giving 5 eggs because the drive is a high performance drive and should NOT be held to all the lower power/noise standards of a slow 5400RPM drive. Buy this drive if you needs tons of space and speed.

1 out of 5 eggsOne out of Two DEAD after 50 Days

Pros: Nice while it Lasted. Bought 11.07.12, installed around 12.12.12 replacing a dead WD 320 Scorpio Black.

I have been using WD drives exclusively for the past 20 years (Raptors in my Desktops, and Scorpios in my Laptops). It seems that WD Quality has been going down in the past several years on their smaller drives. Problem is that once the Newegg 30 day return policy is over, then WD will send you a "Refurbed" Drive which is a problem waiting to happen and which you can never have faith in.

I find it ironic that in these review pages for this particular Model that WD says this is a 'rare' happening and does not reflect their drives.... Maybe they should count the reviews from 'verified' buyers and then change their standard response.

This customer is not happy.

Cons: Consider these drives as 'throw-aways', RMA for new product only.

Overall Review: Look to another Manufacturer for Laptop Drives.

Cons: failure, failure, failure

Overall Review: bought 2 of these to replace two seagate 500gb drives
out of the box they worked but after the first week had corruption of data problems and boot issues
tried running windows check disc, wd drive tools and even spin rite which would repair the drive for a while but after a little while would have boot issues again.
