4 out of 5 eggsGreat drives!

Pros: Fast 7200 RPM
SATA 3
3TB
Great when on sale for 99 or less

Cons: No sata cable or screws included.
Price when not on sale.

Other Thoughts: Be aware the the 3 year warranty is not from the date you purchased the drive, it is from the date stamped on the drive!

For instance, i brought 4 of these drives last year in November and the date on the drive was September 2013. Yesterday i brought 5 more and the date on the drives were October 2013 so thats about 5 months of the warranty already gone.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy Wait Any Longer

Pros: I needed 3 3TB drives to drastically increase my RAID storage. These were on sale and technical specifications seemed to fit the bill. I have not been disappointed. These drives have performed superbly and match the performance of other (more expensive) name brand hard drives. I am very happy with the performance and would gladly buy again in the future.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsNot correct Hard Drive

Pros: None

Cons: I bought these 2 3TB Internal HD with a 64G USB package on Oct. 20th 2013. For some reason, I can't open this package until now. And I can't believe these 3TB HD are not 3TB HD, they are both 750GB HD showing on my computer. I can't return cuz it's over 30 days. All the labels/boxes shows 3TB HD, but they are not.

5 out of 5 eggsStill works

Pros: Silent, very fast and packed very well.

Cons: This unit shows up in my BIOS as the OEM model that has tons of problems. Not sure how it affects warranty but Ill cross that bridge if I ever get there.

Other Thoughts: I bought three of these during black friday, all arrived in good shape, I'm used to buying OEM drives so I was little amazed by the way these hard drives are packed in a retail box, very cool.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Fast, quiet, reliable (so far), and great value. Originally got the Western Digital Black WDFZ4003EX 4TB b/c it was rated as the absolute fastest 4TB HDD, but returned it since it was 2.5x the price of this one despite being only 1TB bigger. IOW, I could get 9TB (3x3TB Toshiba HDDs) for the price of one 4TB WD HDD.

Couple comments:

First, to make all 3TB recognized in Win7, I learned that during Win7 install, you have to:
1) hit SHIFT + F10 on the screen where it shows you the drives
2) enter: diskpart.exe
3) enter: list disk
4) enter: select disk 0 (or whatever disk number the 3TB drive is)
5) enter: clean (this is critical or else Win7 may only recognize 2 of the 3 GB)
6) enter: convert GPT
7) enter: create partition primary
8) enter: assign letter=c
9) enter: format quick fs=NTFS
10) enter: exit
11) enter: exit
Then resume Win7 installation.

You can also do this if you already have Win7 installed and are adding this HDD as a data drive but the OS is not recognizing all 3TB. Open a command prompt window and follow steps 2-11 in the instructions above (obviously using a different drive letter in step 8 since you'll already have a C drive).

Second, since Toshiba bought Hitachi in 2012, my Toshiba HDD label (bought my HDD on BF 2013) no longer says manufactured from a Hitachi plant, as some older reviews have said. This is important, as Hitachi makes the most reliable HDDs according to an extremetech.com article; google it). Recent Toshiba HDDs may still have been built using Hitachi technology or from a former Hitachi plant, but it's not obvious anymore.

My drive has been running fast and reliable so far (albeit only 2 months so far), so no complaints right now. Using to store my camcorder videos. To be safe, back up your data to two other sources (e.g., USB flash drive, Blu Ray/DVD, another HDD, etc.)

Cons: Nothing yet. Some people report failures around the 3 month mark. If happens to me, I'll post a new review.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far, So Good

Pros: Quick read/write speed.
High capacity.
Got 'em on a Black Friday super sale for an excellent price.
Quiet (not silent, but quiet).
They all still work.
3 year warranty.

Cons: No screws, SATA cable, or data migration software was included (i.e. wasn't a true retail kit).

Other Thoughts: I bought five of these drives for a new FreeNAS build; I'd nearly run out of space on my older unit. the RAIDz2 configuration is, for all intents and purposes, a RAID6. FreeNAS has no issues with these drives at all; every drive was immediately seen as a full 3TB drive, and the array was created without any issue whatsoever.

A write test on the entire array (i.e. all five drives working in tandem) yielded a raw write speed of 284Megabytes/sec - yes, bytes, not bits. This is more than double the speed of a gigabit ethernet interface, so I'm quite impressed in that regard. Sure, SSDs would be faster no doubt, but to get 9 fault-tolerant terabytes of storage on SSDs would be a purchase approaching the cost of a new car, so "thoroughly saturating a gigabit network" is plenty fast for me.

All five drives are still spinning flawlessly. No failures in four months of 24/7 uptime for these drives. I nearly took off an egg for the lack of retail kit niceties, but since none of the drives have given me any issue at all, I'm hard pressed to actually do so. Time will tell if these drives withstand the test of time, but I've got a stack of dead hard disks in my closet from every manufacturer, so I'm willing to give Toshiba fair chance this time around...especially since my set of drives was nearly $150 less than the drives I was originally eyeballing for this project.

Definitely have at LEAST one drive's worth of fault tolerance; I recommend 2 drives of fault tolerance since one drive will take anywhere from 10 to 30 hours to rebuild.

1 out of 5 eggsIt is OK, but forget customer support

Pros: The hard drive itself I have no issues with. It installed and partitioned out great. I have W7-64 so I used the hardware manager and pertitioned it out to 3-1gb drives.

Cons: Where I have my issue is when I tried to register the drive with Toshiba. I have bought other Toshiba products in past like a monitor, and a laptop but that was 5 years ago. Today, I don't know what happened to them but it is not good. I spent 2 hours on system and phone trying to register a simple hard drive, but no luck. When I tried on-line it said my serial number and model numbers were not valid. I am holding the hard drive in one hand looking at the drives label with SN and model number and typing them in with the other hand, and still get "Not Valid." I even went on line, thinking maybe I did something wrong that could be cleared up with a simple call. Now I get caught up in circular support, meaning I get automated choices that keep taking me back to the same place that gets me no where. It has a 3 year warranty, but what good does that do you if you can not register it. Also, if any support software that may come along or driver is not going to help me since Toshiba does not recognize a drive they sold. This will be the last time I purchase a Toshiba product until they revamp customer support.

Other Thoughts: I normally and do not like saying negative things about products, but in this day and age, if I can not talk to some one to support the product I bought from them, then why bother.

2 out of 5 eggsSo far not so good.

Pros: Quiet, fast, look high quality

Cons: Bought 2 in September, on died last week in Feb. Waiting for the other to stop working.

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these to put in a Linux media server for my brother. Server runs Ubuntu 13.10, Plex media server, and ZFS for the file system. I put the drives in Mirror mode because I didn't trust them. He called last week saying he struggled to get media from the server. I logged in and ZFS was resilvering that drive, and the linux error log was full of IO errors. I couldn't even get a status from smartctl. Replacing it with a NAS drive before the other disk fails.
