5 out of 5 eggsIt is hard to beat this hard drive, period.

Pros: Reliable, though it is not a hard drive purchased for performance.

Cons: Price, performance is not the best but it is a drive to be used for stability especially in servers. I have purchased at least six and only one had to be RMA later. Not bad for server level demands.

Other Thoughts: Made the purchase you can count on this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Been on almost continuously since 2010 (April 2013 now). It used to spin down in my Windows 7 32-bit install, but I'm on Windows 64 with 8 gig, and I haven't had any of those annoying delays when you click on the drive in Explorer.
I use it for movies, uploads, downloads.

Cons: Would this be better if it was SATA III? Probably not. Due to the size (2TB), huge directories of things like icons are impossible to browse and remain sane. The size of the drive automatically puts pressure on directory listings, so a fine speed for a 300GB drive becomes intolerable for a 2TB drive. I know that Windows' algorithm for directory listing is very inefficient (takes the "safe" route), so that's half the problem.

Other Thoughts: I should try it with linux.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Fast, quiet, cool, and a 5 year warranty! Works perfectly with mdadm kernel raid in RedHat Enterprise Linux 6. Perfect for large bulk storage.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: One of the few drives out there with a 5 year warranty. Drives are consumables, they will die. Not if, but when. If yours died and you lost data, it's your own fault. Don't take an egg off for that, that's a cheap shot. You get a new drive via warranty replacement. As for the data, it's *your* responsibility to back it up regularly. RAID is not a substitute for backup either! Make regular backups and you'll never lose anything.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drives are good.

Pros: These seem to be good reliable enterprise class drives. As with most drives of this type, adequate cooling is the key to longevity.

Cons: I've purchased a total of 18 of these from Newegg. Of those, four were DOA. Don't know what's up with that. If you're buying spares, test them before sticking them on the shelf.

Other Thoughts: Newegg replaced the DOAs with good RMAs, NQA.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable

Pros: I have 8 of these setup on an Intel RT3WB080. I got 12.7 TB of usable space that is super fast.

Feels just as fast as my SSD but with 12.7 TB of space. Pure Awesome.

So far these drives have been very reliable. My battery failed and the server powered off the other day. Not a single drive lost.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Not the cheapest drives; however, they are well suited for this task and I feel that I got my money's worth.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat Warranty?

Pros: It's a reliable, affordable RAID-level drive.

Cons: This is NOT a consumer allocated drive, WD will not let you register it for warranty purposes.

Other Thoughts: I have gone through two completely new drives with Newegg and neither will register properly with Western Digital for the 5-year warranty. Both serial numbers come back as OEM drives only to be sold to system manufacturers. Newegg states they will honor the warranty which is great until a few years down the road when this model is no longer manufactured. WD would be able to get you a refurbished unit at the very least, Newegg will be bound by whatever they have available in stock. Newegg customer services states that "this is how we received the item form WD or another vendor". Perhaps they should be seeking a vendor that will actually sell them drives with valid warranties?

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD RE4 2TB, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
Please note that the correct warranty time for your drive model is 5 years. If you encounter any problems registering your drive on the Western Digital registration portal, we would appreciate the opportunity to further assist you. You may contact us at 1 (800) 275-4932, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/rs/. Please indicate within the online case creation or with the first support agent you speak with, that you are responding to a Newegg review, so we route you and your information to the correct team members.

5 out of 5 eggsReliability only found at server level?

Pros: Can't believe this is the first review of this drive??? On another popular female warrior site there are over a hundred reviews of this drive.

Got burned by pathetic Seagate's rebranding of Samsung, and my 1.5T drive failed after about 5 months. After reading various NewEgg reviews, it appears both Seagate & WD's consumer drives are garbage, thus the upgrade to server-class drives. I got 2 of these for a RAID-1 mirror, and no issues.

Cons: Sad that NCQ was yanked from WD's consumer drives.

Other Thoughts: I'm concerned about drive cooling, and plan to mod my case to have one fan on each side of the case blowing air across the drives. Pathetic how badly laid out 3.5" drives are in typical cases. All that vertical space in a typical case, but only room for three drives, with a whopping quarter inch gap between drives.
