4 out of 5 eggsGreat so far.

This review is from: Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 Expansion Portable Hard Drive STBX2000401

Pros: Small Drive, very quite, USB powered, can be used with an Xbox One, can be reformatted without any proprietary software tools.

Cons: Not a huge con, but the HDD activity light is a blue light that sits on top of the drive. If you want to stealth your storage's appearance while you use with a Xbox One, you will need to cover it as it will constantly blink when playing games. As for the PC crowd, just another light to signify activity to you.

Other Thoughts: Just in case you haven't figured it out yet, this drive does not require its own AC power adapter. It is USB powered, and yes, the Xbox One will supply the power to this device over the USB connection.

5 out of 5 eggsSlim 2.5"2 TB for $80

This review is from: Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 Expansion Portable Hard Drive STBX2000401

Pros: bang for the buck
huge storage room
fits standard lapop drive trays and mostly some wireless hard drive enclosures

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: This is a dream come true! storage space is getting compact, larger and cheap, but data is larger and larger lol
Any way this went into a Seagate satellite wifi drive = went from 500 GB to 2TB.cost of upgrade = 40 bucks!, total cost= 100$, but many hours waisted in trying drives and disassembling enclosure, looking for drive specs online, checking prices etc, maybe a fair trade off...

5 out of 5 eggsGood Reliable Portable Drive

This review is from: Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 Expansion Portable Hard Drive STBX2000401

Pros: Had one of these for over a year and it has worked fine without and problems. I had been a bit shy with buying Seagate again as I had been burned on a couple of their drive and found their "customer service" to be less than stellar. This drive works well and its speed is about average for a USB 2 drive. The cable is short, but none of them come with a long cable.

Cons: None to report.

Other Thoughts: I just wanted to clarify something that a previous reviewer said about the "click of death" and the drive being power hungry. This drive isn't any more power hungry than my Passport terabyte drive and both with do the "click of death" when connected to unpowered hub, but this has to do with the actual power available along with the drive requirements.

The USB 2.0 spec says that it should supply "up to" 500ma and the USB 3.0 spec says "up to" 900ma. Most but not all modern USB controllers will provide this amount. The manufacturers are hard pressed to provide a mechanical hard drive that can operate with so little power and that's why the cord is always short to cut down on loss as they're so close to the limit that doubling the cord length can be enough to prevent it from working.

Unless you are going to buy a powered USB hub, adding a longer cable usually will drop the power threshold down to "click of death" level. There are external drives that come with a power supply, but the tradeoff is the extra bulk of carrying that around. I like the convenience of a physically small drive and can live with the short cord.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Little Big Drive

This review is from: Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 Expansion Portable Hard Drive STBX2000401

Pros: Fast drive, works perfectly fine as a USB drive, when you crack it open (voiding warranty, of course) it's a normal SATA drive (this one made by Samsung), attached to a SATA to USB adapter so you can use it as an internal drive too!

Cons: The blue LED is a little bright. It's not a perfect 90 degree edge on one side.

5 out of 5 eggsFastest external 2.5 I've ever seen

This review is from: Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 Expansion Portable Hard Drive STBX2000401

Pros: I'm an IT consultant and I deal with portable drives all day long. This little guy surprised me. I just finished copying 150GB to it, and it averaged 930mb/s. About triple what I was expecting. Test PC was a Dell Precision workstation.

Cons: None yet. After I test them all (I bought 6) I'm going to void the warranty on them by pulling them out of the USB enclosure and installing them in a hot swap array on my home server.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive, power hungry, why not sell the drive?

This review is from: Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 Expansion Portable Hard Drive STBX2000401

Pros: It's a great little hard drive. Decent read speeds, nice compact size you'd expect from a 2.5" drive and of course; it runs entirely off of a single USB port; which is great for a small portable drive! It also works great when extracted and installed in, say, a PS4

Cons: It's a big power hungry. Before cutting it open (and eliminating the warranty) to get at the bare drive inside; I tested it on my desktop PC. I plugged it into a hub I have sitting on my desk and got the dreaded 'click of death' usually associated with a failed drive. A little frustrated, I got ready to box it back up and RMA it. But then I remembered that the same 'click' can be had from a low power situation. Plugged directly into my motherboard; it worked great. So if you experience the 'click of death', try a powered USB hub (or connecting directly to the motherboard).

Finally; price. Actually the price is great, but seagate, why can't I buy the bare drive (with a warranty!) It seems odd that I can pay a lot less for a retail packaged USB drive with cable (a LOT less) than for the exact same drive in an OEM brown package with no USB enclosure. I wish seagate would sell the internal drive for at least the same price; if not less. (Lots of folks have been using this exact drive for their PS4's, or even to upgrade laptops)

Other Thoughts: What can I say? It works. The USB cable included is short; but USB 3.0 cables are a little pricier and that's basically the "norm" these days. If a longer cable is required, anticipate buying one.

4 out of 5 eggsCompatible with PS4

This review is from: Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 Expansion Portable Hard Drive STBX2000401

Pros: In case anyone was wondering, these do contain a Samsung M9T, which conforms to Sony's 9.5mm height requirement for the PS4. The instructions to upgrade on Sony's site were extremely easy to follow and the entire install was a breeze.

Cons: Only had it long enough to successfully install, so far none.
This isn't a con but I suggest running a few tests on the drive before you crack it open...

Other Thoughts: As far as I know this is still the only 2TB drive that meets the height requirement. This was a little cheaper than the newer Backup plus slim models so I thought I'd let everyone know this is also a viable option to quadruple your PS4 space.
I now have a basically new 500GB HD for the next customer that brings me a laptop with a busted drive.
Alternatively, you could put the 500GB back in the external case (if you're careful enough taking it apart!) and still have a decent backup drive.
