5 out of 5 eggsTruely Awsome Hard Drives

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: All together I'm using 16 of the WD3000F9YZ model 3TB drives in a large media server. Started using them 3 years ago as replacements to constantly failing Seagate Barracuda 3TB drives that had fallen out of their very short warranty. I have never had a single D.O.A. from these WD's and, as of yet, have not had a single drive fail. For the WD REs: 8 of these were bought 3 years ago, 3 were bought 2 years ago, and this final set of 5 are about 9 months old. No DOAs, failures, not one. If your data - and your time and sanity! - is important to you, then this is the disk to stick it on.

Cons: The price is higher than other brands/models - and this impacts me quite a bit because of the quantity of drives I'm using. But you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: About the Seagates, I originally had purchased a total of 20 Seagates hard drives. Had to replace 2 due to D.O.A.s (NewEgg is always good about this) from the beginning. Then, over the course of next 4 years, had multiple failures that were replaced under Seagates warranty (from 1 to 3 years). And discovered the hard way, that the replacements were only covered by a 90 day warranty - even if the original had much more time left. As of today, a total of 31 of these have been used (including warranty replacements), and 5 are still working. So 10% DOA rate, and 75% original drive failure rate, and 121% overall failure rate - over a 4 year period. Also, every warranty replacement drive failed within 5 months, 2 even failed before their 90 day term was up. Never again will I use Seagates.

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: Its good to have high storage capacity, if you know how to open the capability.

Cons: For some reason I keep getting enterprise when I'm only looking for HDD. Is Newegg storing my older orders correcty ?

5 out of 5 eggsGood hard drives

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: All 8 worked out of the box, which is more than I can say about my last experience with Seagate.

Cons: More expensive than a normal hard drive, but you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: In my opinion, there shouldn't be any difference in an enterprise class drive vs a "normal" drive... they should all be up to the same quality and durability standards. Too bad I don't rule the world.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet and Fast

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: This drive is quiet and fast. I use it as the secondary data drive next to my main SSD drive. I have had no issues with the drive so far.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggs1 of 4 DOA

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: Value for size

Cons: I've ordered many drives over the years and this is the first time I have a DOA and on an enterprise drive! Purchased 4 for a NAS and one of the four was DOA. If that is the level of quality control on new drives, I am now worried about the durability of the rest of these drives.

Other Thoughts: I had to pay shipping back to Newegg for the RMA. I think WD should reimburse either newegg or the customer for this. Preferably the RMA should be cost free and hassle free for the customer.

3 out of 5 eggsHigh Vibration but it works

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: Gets the job done

Cons: High Vibration while running... for the first few days the noise was terrible. Turned out the drive was slightly loose in the chassis... swapped bays with another drive which fixed the noise but it drive still vibrates quite a bit in operation. Probably 2-3x what I would consider normal.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable & Fast HDD!

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: The SATA3-6GB/s speeds are quick, even when limited by the 7200RPM platter speed. Throw the three terabytes of storage space into the equation and you’ve got a fast, quiet, and very large single hard disk storage option; though the SE drives are meant to be scaled. The drive has been rock solid. I haven’t had even the smallest issue with this drive during the two weeks of testing.

Cons: HDDs don’t have SSD transfer speeds. This hard drive doesn’t seem to be that much faster than my SATA2-3GB/s HDDs, which I believe is because the drive is limited by the spinning 7200RPM platters. This drive has a hefty price tag at the time of this review (October 2013), but that is likely because of its plethora of storage space, being rated for NAS, and having a five year warranty.

Other Thoughts: I set this up in my windows desktop which already had a SATA3 1TB hard drive installed. I was able to transfer a 3.07GB ISO file from a folder on my desktop to this Western Digital drive in 19 seconds. I was able to measure with hard drive testing software a maximum transfer rate of 172.5 MB/s, average of 159.8 MB/s, with the slowest speed being measured at 132.7 MB/s. The access time of this drive was 10.3 ms, which is faster compared to my other similarly sized drives (which at best had 11.7 ms access time). This drive, under use, was measured running at 40°C/~105°F in my very cramped µATX case (compared to the original drive which was running at 43°C/~110°F). However, it ran at 27°C/~80°F in an actively cooled eSATA external enclosure. This drive seems to be significantly heavier than other SATA HDDs in my inventory. I wasn’t aware all those extra bits weighed so much! As with any HDD/SSD you should maintain a backup of essential data, but that being said, this seems to be a reliable, large, and scalable storage solution.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD SE WD3000F9YZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: >3Tb
>SATA III
>64Mb Cache
>7200rpm

Cons: >None at this moment in time on a Win8 system with UEFI mobo

Other Thoughts: I am using this as a replacement for my media drive and right now, the drive is a little less than a quarter filled. This is not quite enough to induce a 'slow-down' just yet, so posting Crystal DM scores would be misleading. However, I do not anticipate any kind of 'slow-down' that would not already be expected from an HDD as it fills.

The installation went off without a hitch. Combined with Windows 8 and a ASUS Maximus V Formula motherboard, everything to handle large, single partition drives was already there. If you are running windows, you will need a motherboard with an EFI firmware, or one that deploys a special workaround to use GPT addressing.
Once the drive was attached to the computer (I used an external dock for this), the drive had to be initialized. I set it to GPT - do not use MBR if you want a single partition - and formatted into NTFS. After that, the move onto the new drive was pretty text book.

After the drive gets a little closer to 50% utilized, I will run Crystal DM on it and post the scores.
