5 out of 5 eggsGreat Server Drive

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: Performed as advertised, easy to use.

Cons: Packaging not sufficient. Of the 3 drives ordered, 1 was bent / damaged in shipping? Lucky I only needed two to get going on the project, third was backup spare designation.

Other Thoughts: WD drives used a lot in the past, no complaints on them.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: I have two of these drives, 500 GB each, set in a RAID 0 array and I couldn't be happier with the storage speed. Both of these drives are incredibly effective on their own (sector checks didn't take very long at all). After they've settled into the "bell curve" of failure, I feel confident that I will get many more years out of these drives.

Cons: Didn't actually buy them from Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsEarly death

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: Quiet. Folks said it would be loud, but I don't hear a thing.

Fast. Considerable improvement in transfer rates over my old drive.

Cons: Short life. I've not had the drive a year and I'm now getting r/w errors causing crashes and other odd behavior that drives most folks to Geek Squad. If I didn't have Hiren's, I wouldn't be posting this right now. Also, POST shows SMART warning.

I bought the drive specifically for its durability, yet it's the only platter drive I've ever owned to give up so soon in its lifespan.

Other Thoughts: The drive for me is for storage, only. I don't play games or do video editing or anything demanding to any of my drives, nor is there much turnover of data. What I store on the drive pretty much stays there.

5 out of 5 eggsGoing Well (RAID5)

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: Hardware Veteran.
Got 3 of theese to replace my 3 140GB Velociraptors in a raid 5 array. The VR's (of course) were going strong but I'm doing a space upgrade since the drives were so old that the needs for space have changed. After the first few week no bad sectors or hanging whines. now I have nearly 1TB at 7200rpm rather than 280GB at 10,000RPM. Still a minimal trade off for the price. my drives are always spun up to speed after boot so it really isn't an issue, and the operating seek times are slightly better due to the increased cache. Much better than Solid State for my busy raid. I would "max write" an SSD too quickly to make the price worth its short lifespan.
No returns, No RMA's

Cons: only 7200 RPM

Other Thoughts: Only 7200RPM compared to my velocoraptors, but the price difference does not justify the benefit

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hard Drive

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: I currently install Western Digital Re drives exclusively in all my client builds. I have never had a problem with one.

Cons: None that I have experienced.

Other Thoughts: This is a great drive. I find them to be quite reliable.

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: Good price

Cons: Two out of three would not pass the WD diagnostic

Other Thoughts: Bought three of these. All of the anti-stat bags had been opened. WD diagnostic doesn't identify the proper interface. WD diagnostic FAIL at quick test. Didn't begin to use the drives until six months after receipt so have to go through warranty hassle. ALWAYS CHECK NEW DRIVES WITH THR PROPER DIAGNOSTIC AS SOON AS YOU GET THEM.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat else is there to buy?

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: Used these for many new computer builds over the last year without any failures...so far. A little noisy...typical WD hard drive.

Cons: Some people have had too many hard drive failures. Mechanical drives have seemed to dip in quality since the floods in Asia. Prices are still high.
Without the quality of these drives being better, they are not the best value anymore. WD has done great for many years and all the sudden they have Red, Purple, Green, etc. with higher than normal failure rates. Jack of all trades and the master of none.....?

Other Thoughts: These are good hard drives and do the job for me. They are not the same quality as the older WD6400AALS Black drives I bought in past years. Those were some of the best drives I have ever used. Still have many running after 4 years of constant use in my business computer.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: None to speak of at this point. We'll see how the RMA replacement performs.

Cons: This is the second Western Digital hard drive I've received for a build that was DOA. A third died within a year. Very disappointing. I went with the RE drive hoping to avoid letting down another friend when building a computer, but obviously the results were not any better. I have officially purchased my last WD hard drive.

5 out of 5 eggsBest drive at this price

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: Best performing hard drive for the price - only slightly more than standard desktop models. In fact the price is about the same. Five year warranty. 64MB cache. I have deployed dozens of these and not experienced a bad one yet. Good quality product. Smooth and fairly quiet operation.

Cons: No cons at this price. I was waiting for awhile for WD to put out a 6G version, the RE drives were only 3G until somewhat recently.

Other Thoughts: Very good as a single drive in a workstation as well as multi drive server setups. Pay a little extra shipping and the drives receive better (less) handling in transit.

5 out of 5 eggsDressed in Black

This review is from: WD Re 500GB Datacenter Capacity Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 inch WD5003ABYZ

Pros: I only owned these a few weeks. but I have several of them in a raid. Drives are great. Note if you get a real adaptec raid card, 4 of these will give you Read/Write with the performance of a single ssd. Raid 6.

Cons: No not today

Other Thoughts: only reason for platers drives now are for single server environments. SSD will not do much with the speed of LANS in the way.
