5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: Great and rugged product. It feels sturdy, light-weight and a slim design. The USB cable is long enough to not be a hassle. The cable doesn't pop out easily like some other external drives I've had. The one touch back-up is a great added feature. All in all for a 1TB USB 3.0 drive it's a great buy you can't pass up.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsFast and tough

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: The drive is clad in hard rubber (or armor is how they call it) all throughout. It is rated military grade MIL-STD-810F meaning it was tested by dropping it 26 times on lava from 4 ft away. 4 ft having been the typical distance you may accidentally drop something chest high. (OK, I did lie on the lava thing.) The test is to have it drop in different angles, the sides, front, bottom, etc and the drive doesn't have to be on. And for the reason that they have already drop tested it, I will not test it again on this review. I will just take their word for it :)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I first plugged it to my PC and was glad that it didn't ask to install any software like other external hard drives I had before. My first task was to copy a 1G avi video from the desktop to the drive - 10.3 seconds. Copying back from the A15 to the PC took a little longer at 13.7 seconds.

I ran the Crystal Disk Mark and it posted read at 123 MB/s and write at 121 MB/s for a simple test. As for real world test I transferred 12 Gigs of all kinds of files from my Dropbox folder to the drive - 4 mins and 32 seconds.

Using BlackMagicDesign for speed test, the drive was roaring on my Mac Air with read at 345 MB/s 9 and even up to 540.0 MB/s and writes at 327 MB/s. A 1.47 Gbs movie copies at 13.81 seconds to the drive and copied back at 12.5 seconds.

Quick specs:
- 1 TB
- USB 3.o
- 2.5" drive
- One-touch back-up (which I couldn't care less)
- Win, Mac & Linux compatible
- Weight: 200g
- I cannot find any data on the RPM

4 out of 5 eggsGood Unit

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: Reliable and easy to use.

Cons: Not as much of a bargin as other units I have found since buying this unit.

Other Thoughts: At the time I was putting together items for my daughter to bring to college, this was a good combination of size, quality and price. Shortly after several other units were offered with a better size/cost ratio without sacrificing quality.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: Gives me what I need, which is more hard drive space for my gameplay recordings

Cons: Says it is a 1TB, but I only get 931 gigs. I know it uses some to run the device, but a terabyte is 1024 gigs. It's using quite a bit for a plug and play

5 out of 5 eggsThis is a great Product

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: This is a great device that can hold hours upon hours of videos, music, or thousands of pictures. It is almost impossible to break this (trust me I tried) and it withheld everything. In conclusion, this product is: f-you, I'm invincible.

Cons: Bigger than I wanted.

5 out of 5 eggsAn Excellent Drive

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: Attractive case
Great Benchmarks
Shock resistant cover
3 year warranty
Nice soft blue power light
USB 3.0 cable is rugged, but not so thick as to be difficult to coil up for traveling/packing. It is 24" in length.

Cons: Larger than normal case (for a portable drive) -- a minor negative, but not worth deducting an egg. Its width is about normal for a portable drive but its length is about 1" longer. I have been unable to find a carrying case to fit it. On the other hand, since it comes encased in a shock resistant rubberized cover, a carrying may not even be necessary.

Other Thoughts: Earlier this year, I purchased the big brother of the A15 (the A80) after reading a number of very good reviews. The primary difference between the two is the A80 is water proof while the A15 is not. Both come enclosed in military-grade shock resistant cases.

I was impressed with the bench marks of my A80 so when I needed an another portable drive I opted for the A15.

Benchmarks:

The Silicon Power A15 benchmarks are: 115.60 MB/s Sequential Read and 115.35 MB/s Sequential Write. The Random 4K speeds are 0.596 MB/s Read, and 2.265 MB/s Write (CrystalDiskMark). This is exceptional performance for a 5400 RPM 2.5" drive (or even a 7200 RPM 2.5" drive).

For comparison, I also have a Western Digital "My Passport." It benchmarks at 92.35 MB/s Sequential Read and 87.65 MB/s Sequential Write. Random 4K speeds are: 0.363 MB/s Read and 1.018 MB/s Write.

The SP A15 significantly out performs the Western Digital in every area.

As reported in other reviews I have read, my A80 emits a weak (but audible) very high-pitched sound/tone when running (which can be mildly irritating if you are in a very quiet room). But (happily) the A15 is completely silent in this regard.

Although Silicon Power is not a house-hold name in the portable hard drive industry, their products are very good. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat build quality

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: Feels very sturdy and rigid. Doesn't seem like this thing could break very easily. USB 3.0 is a plus, although I don't use it, I'm sure many other reviewers will and will use it. For those of you who do not know, USB 3.0 is backwards-compatible with USB 2.0, so you won't have any problems using this on an older/not-so-new PC. Very nice, and I got it on sale for $89.99!

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: People tend to forget that portable hard drives are just that, normal drives that are vulnerable to dropping, shaking, and other abnormal conditions that external hard drives are forced to endure. It is good that Silicon Power has put a rugged, sturdy case on this delicate piece of equipment, not that many other companies do that.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Stuff

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: Its 1TB, its USB 3.0, it might bounce if dropped, but I don't plan to test that. No complaints. It is being used to back up my media files etc. Works like a charm. Feels sturdy, works as expected.

Cons: None to this point

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

This review is from: Silicon Power Rugged Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Meets Military Drop-test Standards) SP010TBPHDA15S3K Black

Pros: I purchased this drive 6 months ago (for 20 bucks less) and it has performed flawlessly and pretty fast.
The drive in mine is the Toshiba MQ01ABD100.
I use this mainly for video backup and playback.and it's been very good. It;s taken a couple of 3 to 4' drops onto vinyl covered wood floors without incident.
I can't speak for the backup software with the drive as I don't and never will use it.

Cons: None, it does what it's supposed to without complaint.

Other Thoughts: Would consider a 2GB drive when and if they make one.
