4 out of 5 eggsGreat wireless, but don't buy for the USB ports

Pros: Decent web interface. I use it in access-point only mode since I already have a nice Juniper router as my Internet gateway. I have had solid wireless connectivity on both frequencies. Can be used as a 5-port gig switch when in access point mode (perfect for connecting all my living room devices at wired gig: smart TV, PS3, media center computer, plus port for uplink to core home switch).

Cons: Slow USB 3.0 speeds. I connected a Seagate USB 3.0 3TB Backup Plus drive to the Asus USB port and created a samba share on the network. From a high-end PC directly connected to a gig ethernet port on the Asus I could only get 20MB/s max write speed to the drive connected to the Asus router. I get over 120MB/s write speed when the same drive is directly connected to a USB3.0 port on the high-end PC. I would not recommend using the USB ports on this device.

Other Thoughts: Excellent wireless access point, but just pretend the USB 3.0 ports don't exist unless you are OK with slow transfer speeds to the connected USB hard drive.
Make sure to disable WPA so you are not vulnerable to Reaver attacks. WPA enable/disable screen is hidden when operating in access-point only mode but google or check Asus forums for work-around.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic.

Pros: -I have not had to power-cycle this thing once since first setting it up a few months ago.
-Fast, strong, and extremely stable connection.
-Dual-band is lovely
-Looks somewhat ridiculous (in a good way)
-The printer sharing and VPN are great features and have so far worked for me without issue

Cons: Rather warm but not so much that it concerns me. Never hot.

Other Thoughts: Bought this (RT-N65R which is the same exact model only it's sold at a certain popular physical store) to replace my D-link DGL-4500 Extreme that was completely dropping connection multiple times a day which always REQUIRED a power-cycle. With this router I have seen much more consistent connection speeds and ping over both wireless and wired connections and have not had a single router-related drop of connection since the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsThis Has Been A Great Router

Pros: Reliable, fast, super-high strength, looks cool. The pass-thru mode (for using this router as a switch hub for another DSL router/gateway) was absolutely easy to configure, it started working immediately with no Googling or assorted shenanigans, and it's been very reliable.

Cons: Runs warm, which concerns me.

One day the router stopped providing a connection to the Internet, and I had to power-cycle it. Not bad for six months of constant use, and much, much better than cheaper routers I've used in the past.

Other Thoughts: To anyone considering purchasing a router for themselves or a friend, listen to my advice: buy the most expensive router you can possibly afford. In the past, I've owned a variety of $20-30 routers from various manufactures, and all of them failed constantly and had lots of bizarre issues.

Now that I have this router, my wifi radius is double or triple what it used to be, I have real Gigabit LAN speeds, I have a USB port in the router that I can stick an external drive into and possibly replace my home file server, and it was even easy to configure with my non-standard network setup.

Most importantly, I don't have to spend time dealing with random router issues. Money well spent.

1 out of 5 eggsPretty...But doesn't work

Pros: Pretty router, good technical support

Cons: The documentation it ships with is very limited (like 4 or 5 pages limited). The router turned on, and after running the install CD, the software could not find the hardware. I had LAN internet through the router, but no wireless. I could not run the the setup wizard for it since it won't run if it can't detect a connection to the router. Called their support. I received a support person immediately (no wait), they were very helpful, and after going through some steps for about 45 minutes, they determined the hardware was probably faulty and that I should return it. It's a shame, I like ASUS stuff.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry to hear that you did not get your RT-N65u working properly and were told to return it. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns with future ASUS products. You can reach me at cl-jeremy@asus.com and I will be happy to assist you with anything on your mind.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent - Firmware Update Required

Pros: Awesome device. Great connection throughout the house. Does everything as advertised. Does everything a router should and more. Easy install, great GUI.

Cons: YOU HAVE TO INSTALL FIRMWARE FOR THIS DEVICE TO WORK PROPERLY. It doesn't come out of the box with the latest firmware. Most of the individuals who are complaining haven't updated to the latest firmware. However, it's super easy to install.

2 out of 5 eggsWill not work with HDD

Pros: Small. dual band.Fast speeds.

Cons: Drops connections often. Will not work with any seagate hard drive.
gets super hot enough to make me think it could start a fire. FTP doesnt work.
I ve done research and found that the 56U also cant be used with Seagate and then further find out NONE of the Asus Routers made recently can be used with Seagate drives. WTH? You kidding me Asus? I wanna toss this thing out the window so bad. WOrks just fine with the little cheap 4gb thumb drive. Not the 2TB Seagate. I spent allot of money and time planning on this setup. Now, Im just sick of this. It seems allot of companies are making junk these days. They offer awesome specs and hide the actually performance. Lets not get into the USB3 issue that requires you to get a double shielded $60 cable when using it on the 2.4ghz frequency. For $112 I think I got about $30 worth of a wireless Modem. I shoulda just stuck with the old Belkin! Not even gonna think about going back to Asus. Now I gotta either return this or go buy a few HDD's to see which one will work, then buy a fan to keep it cool. Then try to figure out why it disconnects sometimes. Lovely ( rolls eyes )

Other Thoughts: DONT follow the bandwagon. A better Firmware wont make it better. Just go with another name brand.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

There aren't any specific models of hard drives that we know to be incompatible with our routers. In addition to the possible overheating, you may need to send your router in to us so that we can look at it. Please contact me at cl-jeremy@asus.com if you have the time so that I may try to help you. I am happy to work through this with you if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

5 out of 5 eggsExceeded my expectations.

Pros: everything!! best range out of any router I previously owned, 5 bars everywhere in my house. 350 mb speeds on 5ghz, works like a charm.

Cons: 2ghz signal speed runs at 5 mb , but I do not use that frequency anyways.

3 out of 5 eggsUnreliable with anything plugged into USB 3.0

Pros: When working, decent signal. 2 USB ports. Gigabit Lan

Cons: USB 3.0 renders wireless unstable

Other Thoughts: My main reason for choosing this router was the 2 USB 3.0 ports. I attach external drives with media for streaming. Unfortunately, apparently USB 3.0 emits a signal on the same frequency as the wireless that causes interference and renders is unreliable. Every morning, first thing, when I try to connect with my laptop, the signal goes in and out until I unplug the USB devices. REALLY poor. Tech support offers no real solution

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the issues you have been experiencing with USB 3.0 and wireless signals. Unfortunately, the only current solution is to either shield your cable/device connected to the port or move it further away from the router. If you would like to discuss this further or if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at cl-jeremy@asus.com.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't support Tomato

Pros: Dual band, cheaper than the RT-N66 model, included firmware performs basic functionality without too much fuss, uses WPA2 by default.

Cons: Incompatible with Tomato. I know, it's my fault for not looking it up first, but I thought it was safe to assume the RT-N65 would use a similar chipset to the RT-N66. Apparently not.

I'm also really not a fan of the vertically slanted design. It seems prone to falling over, looks really tacky, and the surface texture on the front makes it hard to see the status indicators properly.

Other Thoughts: I don't think routers should ever turn massive security holes like WPS on by default, but at least I could turn it off easily.
