Instaprevue
Easy, Live Source Selection
This receiver incorporates InstaPrevue visual port management technology, making input source selection much easier. InstaPrevue provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected via HDMI. You no longer have to remember that your gaming console is connected to Port 3, or your BD player to Port 1, for example- you can see what's playing and choose accordingly.

HDMI On screen display
Easy Access For Settings Changes
The TX-NR414's overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature makes changing the settings on your A/V receiver quick and easy. On-screen set-up menus appear over the video image you're watching so you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to stop the program and switch to a different screen to access menus.

Direct Digital Connection: The Cleanest Your iPod Can Sound
The front-panel USB port lets you play MP3 and AAC stored in an iPod/iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC audio files stored on a flash-memory device, and you can use the system's own remote for track selection and playback. Your music will sound much cleaner and clearer, as the audio signal is transported in digital rather than analog form through the direct digital connection.

Have an Apple TV? The Onkyo remote is preset to control Apple TV.
Use it with your Onkyo A/V Receiver. It's all integrated, and it all works together beautifully.

Free Apps: Seamless Control & Streaming
The Onkyo Remote App 2 for iPod touch/iPhone¹ and Onkyo Remote for Android² and Kindle Fire provide an intuitive way to operate Onkyo network A/V receivers. Control input sources, adjust settings, and play audio stored in a smartphone wirelessly (Android and Kindle Fire only) using the application's interactive graphical display. The Remote Apps are available separately as free downloads.

Onkyo is environmentally efficient
Save Power With Hybrid Standby
Hybrid Standby provides 'HDMI through' functionality while the receiver sleeps, so you don't have to fully power up to watch a Blu-ray or play a game using just your TV's sound. The receiver also maintains a local network connection when on Hybrid Standby mode, so you can switch the unit on at any time using the Onkyo remote apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

With the standby mode, compatible RIHD components will go into standby when the user selects standby on the display. Secondly, with volume control, the user can use the display’s remote control to adjust the volume on the A/V receiver. And with the direct change function, RIHD will automatically detect which RIHD-compatible playback component has been selected.

2 out of 5 eggsShort lifespan, bad customer service

Pros: Easy setup, plenty of options, good sound, performed perfectly for about a year.

Cons: Only worked for about a year. Video signal comes through still, but I am no longer getting sound through any of the channels regardless what input it's set on. Not even the FM input is working. All speakers still work. I tried to install the firmware update via USB, but the receiver is not reading the USB drive any longer. I checked online for a solution, and discovered that this has been a fairly common problem with Onkyo receivers (not just this model). The solution offered by customer service is "contact us again if the problem persists." Then they just sent me a link to find an Onkyo repair service (a few hours away). So $60 in gas + repair fee...I might as well buy a new receiver and save myself a trip.

3 out of 5 eggsBasic AV amp with Network

Pros: Network (for Pandora)
Fairly easy setup
Decent sound on 5.1 setup

Cons: Update hassle when first setup
On screen setup menus text based
Lots of popping noises when powered on
Takes up to 20 seconds to display source

Other Thoughts: Bought in the low 200s to replace ailing Yamaha for short term - Cheapest network receiver available. Sound is decent but not as nice as more expensive Yamaha rig. Mostly use with DirecTV source and Sony TV. Lots of popping and black screen when turned on, but syncs up in about 20 seconds.

Setup was pretty manual (no microphone to auto set for speakers) but the text based menus can change the db level on each speaker until it sounds right. Had to drop my JBL center quite a bit to make it blend with DefTech LRs.

Pandora is available but a bit quirky from the remote. It doesn't seem to remember the last channel you listened to, so you have to select it with quite a few button pushes.

Good receiver for the price. Thanks Newegg!

1 out of 5 eggsConstant problems

Pros: Prices wasn't bad, HDMI inputs

Cons: So many little defects I don't even know where to begin. Issues with it staying on the network, sound intermittent from AT&T Uverse box, HDMI through problems, computer attached won't boot into windows unless detached... on and on I could go. Oh, the latest, lost my right channel... still need to pursue warranty but really just want to order something different.

Other Thoughts: I am very dissatisfied with this Onkyo product. I live in an apartment and don't need much or I would have spent more on a higher end amp, but still, this is just garbage. I wish I could get my money back

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for me!

Pros: Purchased for $199 - great deal!. Receiver needed firmware update which went OK via ethernet. So far no issues. Setup menus not as intuitive as Yamaha RXV373 (purchased earlier but overheated and began acting buggy-unit returned)and sound is on par, maybe a bit inferior to my ears but sound stage effects not as processed sounding as Yamaha's(totally subjective of course). On the other hand, more inputs, network capability, separate zone 2 output, good tech support (3 calls answered wihin 30 seconds by technically astute Onkyo staff) made this a winner for me. It appears the older reviews regarding inferior firmware are not relavent as this unit is AOK with most up to date firmware. Time will tell if I get 10 years out of this unit as I usually do before they become obsolete or dead. No regrets, good recovery Onkyo.

Cons: Needed firmware update out of box, but that went well seamlessly

Other Thoughts: Dollar for dollar and feature for feature, value is unbeatable and believe me, I CHECKED. No regrets, glad I pulled the trigger. BTW, NewEgg is 100% behind their products, no problems whatsoever re: returning buggy Yamaha receiver.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't risk it !

Pros: Good Dolby support, 3D, 6 HDMI, Network radio

Cons: HDMI switch leaves much to be desired

Other Thoughts: I was waiting to write my review, but the time has come. My 2nd unit just died after under two weeks, the first one died in just over 3 weeks. Both times HDMI output just stopped. I even went out and bought all new HDMI cables, switched them out, only thing wrong was the TX-NR414. I would have given it a zero rating if I could have...

4 out of 5 eggsgood value

Pros: good price, works well for me

Cons: very poor user interface, especially for the internet options. android phone app can't find my receiver, app has no option for entering IP address manually, dunno why, would prolly work if it did.

Other Thoughts: had issues with HDMI cables, this thing just didn't like some of them for whatever reason, thought I was having issue with video passthough for a while but different cables fixed my issue.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but clunky UI

Pros: Decent sound and amazing features for the price, bristling with HDMI ports and digital ports. Lots of setup options for 5.1 system, including setting dB level for each speaker and Sub cross-over freq. Test tone helped equalize the sound except for bass (hard to tell levels at low freq). Wired network connection plays Pandora (and MANY music sites) and sees DLNA server(s). Zone 2 (pre) out in case you need it (I don't now). Installed updated firmware via network per instructions, and it is doing what it is supposed to. Android App (haven't tried it yet but will).

Cons: Not as good sound as a mid-range Yamaha RX (maybe cheaper DACs and/or amp section?). Plastic feel to front panel switches. Clunky text based on-screen UI (mostly used for setup). Need to enable network port in standby (should be default?). No automatic level microphone setup.
