No mSATA drive, Audio issues

ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Professional LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard
ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Professional LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard

Pros: It's like a super cheap substitute for a much higher-end board. Also, I find it to be aesthetically pleasing. Good color-scheme. Had issues with sound (see below) but now that it's working, it's fantastic quality. Ten internal SATA ports, eight USB 3.0 ports (four are from internal connections), four USB 2.0 ports and one of them you can set a rather high polling for say a gaming mouse. Having two LAN ports is great. UEFI was extremely helpful in debugging my initial build attempt... told me exactly which RAM stick to re-seat, allowing me to boot up one the second attempt. Also, the drivers/utilities ASRock provides allows for all sorts of things you'd normally get on the high-end expensive mobos, such as USB 3.0 acceleration, USB port always-on charging (and super-charging), teaming LAN connections, and tons of fan headers. What really sold me was the shear number of accessories it comes with -- truly fantastic. Comes with an adapter of 2 extra USB 3.0, which can either be mounted in a 5.25/3.5 bay or in a rear expansion slot (my pref) -- just check... very few mobos have this accessory flexibility.

Cons: Lots of minor issues. So first is that the optional 4-pin molex power connection at the bottom of the mobo is mounted parallel to the PCB, so it points down instead of out/perpendicular. This is a big problem because in cases where the PSU is located on the bottom (typical and desirable IMO), that connection is like 2mm away form the PSU -- completely blocked and unusable. But this is not a problem if you don't have a power hunger graphics card or planning to SLI. VRM heat spreader does not double as a water block like in higher-end mobos, not that I was planning on using such a thing. Just a nifty feature to have. I had a lot of issue getting the CPU closed-loop water pump (Thermaltake Extreme 2.0) to be recognized, but this might be an issue with their drivers. Took some time, but I finally got it to work. mSATA drive does not fit in the slot below the first PCI6 16x slot. I hit the CMOS battery. Turns out the slot is only meant to handle a shorter mini-PCIe card (say for wifi support). I wonder why they don't just make those slots perpendicular (stability I guess). It is also likely that even if my mSATA drive did fit, the mobo could not support it (because it was not designed to). Bummer cuz my old low-end mobo could support it. Getting the sound to work! I may have done something odd on initial build attempt. I plugged in the front audio connector and later unplugged after it boot up. But that shouldn't be an issue -- I don't know. I had no sound out the rear green plug. I tried a bunch of stuff and it took a day to get it working. SoundBlaster drivers looked fine, and the volume mixer showed activity when I playback music, but I got nothing out of my earphones. I thought there may be a mobo jumper I missed to switch between rear panel and front panel, but there wasn't. I'm not even sure how I finally resolved it, but it works fine now. Minor con: the rear-IO shield does not have that cushion on the inside like the high-end ones do. Darn! Another minor con: SATA ports feel flimsy. They could have used harder/denser/thicker plastic here.

Overall Review: I was initially set on the ASUS ROG Formula VI. Then I compared the features and considered the price difference. The value here was just too good to pass up! Plus I'm a sucker for accessories. Could have gone without the PS/2 port. I wish the 24-pin power connector was parallel to the PCB -- that way the cable-management would be more tidy. But I can see why a large majority of mobo manufacturers do not do this: physical stability. That mounting takes a lot of force (both on insertion and removal). ASRock's choice of positioning on the optional 4-pin molex power connector is just stupid and ill-conceived. Just one more fan header would have helped me. Also having ones near the middle of the right edge would be a good idea (for the two in the front). Having them be 4-pin variety is would have been another plus. Again, sound quality is fantastic! UEFI is excellent. However it's important to note that a lot of features are disabled by default. The most obvious being the RAM speed. Remember to set the RAM profile as one of the first things on initial boot-up. And disable things you don't need.

Missing cables and screws

Cooler Master Sleeve Bearing 120mm Blue LED Silent Fan for Computer Cases, CPU Coolers, and Radiators (Value 2-Pack)
Cooler Master Sleeve Bearing 120mm Blue LED Silent Fan for Computer Cases, CPU Coolers, and Radiators (Value 2-Pack)

Pros: Quiet. Bright but not too bright.

Cons: I've ordered this item in the past, and know what it SHOULD come with. It was completely missing screws and molex adapters. I have plenty of these items saved up, but missing accessories is definitely not a good sign.

Overall Review: I have a pair from 4 years ago, they still work fine. So these fans have good longevity.

Backlight Bleed

ASUS VG278HE 27" 1920 x 1080 144 Hz HDMI , D-Sub, Dual-link DVI-D (Support NVIDIA 3D Vision) Built-in Speakers LCD Monitor
ASUS VG278HE 27" 1920 x 1080 144 Hz HDMI , D-Sub, Dual-link DVI-D (Support NVIDIA 3D Vision) Built-in Speakers LCD Monitor

Pros: It's a good monitor. I spent a great deal of time researching which to buy to suit my needs. This suits my needs. Also, I had no dead pixels. I ran with 3D Vision 2 and it was great.

Cons: - No remote control. My last monitor had one. - Backlight bleeds very noticeably on the 4 edges, when viewing in a dark room. Not sure why there's not more complaint about this from other users. - DPI is really low and noticeable. (In other words, I want higher than 1920x1080.)

Overall Review: Despite the many cons I listed, it's still a good monitor. For those that think they need a 28 inch but not higher than 1920px width... don't underestimate how poor the DPI gets or how large the display will be. I think 24" is perfect for typical users/gamers. For my needs, I wanted something used like a TV from 9 feet viewing distance AND as a monitor up close. Throw a remote it and it'd be perfect for me. 3D Vision 2 is not for everybody, but I thought it was spectacular to game in (mainly SWTOR). Glasses gave me too much of a headache to use for extended sessions however.

Very good value, but missing fan screws

Thermaltake Chaser A31 VP300A5W2N Blue SECC ATX Mid Tower Gaming Case
Thermaltake Chaser A31 VP300A5W2N Blue SECC ATX Mid Tower Gaming Case

Pros: Blue color is extraordinary. Plenty of run underneath the top cover and the front cover. Top hard drive cage comes off. Six of these trays total, three in each cage. Fans it comes with are superbly sleeved. And it's a good thing it doesn't come with too many fans. USB 3.0 connector in the top front edge is awesome. Doors feature screws that stay hanging on after removal, which prevents screw loss. Doors feature a bulge to give more room. The right door bulge helps a lot with cable management behind the mobo plate. It allowed for attaching a 2.5 inch SSD to the back of the mobo plate (double sided tape or velcro). Air filters on the top, on the bottom, and on the entire front. All the drive trays (3.5 inch and 5.25 inch) are completely tool-less. Although you'd need screws for 2.5 inch drives. Lots of screw holes on the top as well as holes for cable management. Very good cable management allowance overall. Good expansion slot covers -- black and grated.

Cons: Mine had black foam feet. I know older revisions had nothing on the feet. Rubber feet would have been an improvement. Mine was missing a few of the long fan screws. And missing a bunch of the sticky grommets. I recommend using 4 on the bottom of the case where the PSU sits just to avoid metal-on-metal contact. Motherboard plate does not come off. Also the alignment made is so that my mobo rear connectors didn't fit tight against the rear of the case. But this could be due to my mobo. Lower 3.5 inch hard drive cage is not removable. Minor con: Longer feet would have been good. Option to attach wheels, even better. Thumb screws for the expansion slot covers would have been good.

Overall Review: The value of this case is terrific! Not a pro or con, but the top and front covers both come off without screws... This can be very convenient but also very dangerous. You got to be extra careful when carrying the case. Certain places you'd naturally grab are to remove the covers, not to lift the case! I would have preferred some sort of a locking mechanism. I found it a bit cramped for my build; I should have gone with a full-tower. Although it is the largest mid-tower I have ever had. If you are planning on putting in a closed-loop 240 radiator on the top, then you will likely not have room to put in both of it's fans unless you have very low profile ram sticks. Even with the fins of my G.SKILLS Trident, it wouldn't fit right. Also a bunch of the mobo connections would be hidden behind the radiator due to the size of the case. So I had to temporarily remove the radiator just to attach the CPU power, use some of the fan headers and install RAM. I ended up only attaching 3 of the 4 fans I had planned on using with my radiator. Minor thing: the 2 fans it comes with have very lengthy cables. I would say they are actually way too long -- something like 3 feet each. But I'd rather that than being too short.

Pros: Came very well packaged for transport. Pro: The drive works and was really cheap. That's all I care about. Don't use these things much, but all my old ones were IDE and my new mobo doesn't have such a connection (nor should it).

Cons: none

Overall Review: Doesn't come with any cable. It's just the drive by itself as you should expect of an OEM item.

Card is Beast

Asus GTX670-DC2OG-2GD5 GeForce GTX 670 Graphic Card - 980 MHz Core - 2 GB GDDR5 SDRAM - PCI Express 3.0
Asus GTX670-DC2OG-2GD5 GeForce GTX 670 Graphic Card - 980 MHz Core - 2 GB GDDR5 SDRAM - PCI Express 3.0

Pros: A lot bigger than I expected, which I like. Handles everything I throw at it. Got it to overclk a little bit more than it already was. The Direct CU II cooling solution is very sturdy and certainly the quietest on the market. Card stays cooler than with other manufacture provided (air) coolers.. although I guess you could do better with a water cooling block but I don't find that necessary.

Cons: Unigine Heaven crashed on it with even the tiniest more overclking. But I learned not to care because 3DMark and everything else I through at it was perfectly fine.

Overall Review: Just wanted to point out that it uses TWO 6-pin power connectors (YAY!) -- that part was not clear to me when I bought it. During the build I was worried I had to somehow manage one 6-pin and one 8-pin connection which I doubted my 5 year old Rosewill PSU had (oh turns out it did, way to 'futureproof'..). Anyhow, I'm curious how two of these will run in SLI if I ever get my hands on a second one. So exciting :).
