My son wants to upgrade his CPU and the i7 we bought definitely was not compatible with his motherboard.   is this one compatible with the ASUS AMD m5A99FX PRO r2.0?

No this is an AM3+ socket.  Meaning that you are looking for an AMD FX processor.  It would be something like AMD FX-6xxx, AMD FX-8xxx, or AMD FX-4xxx.  If you are looking to use this particular processor you would want to find a motherboard that uses an "AM4" socket.  This would allow you to use this particular processor.  Some of them would be ASUS Crosshair VI Hero, ASrock Fatal1ty X370, or GigaByte AORUS GA-AX370-Gaming K7 motherboard to name a few.  You should also be aware that this new processor... (Which is AMAZING!!)  also makes use of a the newer DDR4 Memory/RAM where the motherboard you had questions about only uses DDR3.  Good luck with your upgrade/build.  I think if you give it time and do a little research into the parts you will find that you not only prefer to make your own PC that it will run better than anything that you can buy off the shelf from HP, Dell, etc... May seem redundent, but does this 1800x CPU require Water Cooling or would air cooling get the job done? No specific specification is listen on that.

I ran mine on cheap air cooling for a couple weeks. No problem as this CPU only draws 95W max (not like FX9590 drawing 220W) -- 95 is quite low for a high end CPU. I now have water cooling. Is about 10C cooler. It runs at 4.0GHz all cores with stock 1.35 volts. 25C with no apps running. 61C in Prime 95 max stress test.

Will this processor work with AMD3+ motherboards?

All AMD  3, 5, and 7 processors, including the 1800X use socket AM4, NOT AM3.   The common chipsets are the A320, B350, and X370 for Ryzen support.    Threadripper uses a different socket, so socket AM4 motherboards will NOT support Threadripper.

Your motherboard is an FM2, and Ryzen requires the newer AM4. Your motherboard cannot run a Ryzen CPU, and if you get a new AM4 motherboard you will also need newer DDR4 RAM, because your current motherboard is running DDR3 RAM.

I own and love this processor, with one caveat there is no stock cooler, so you need to purchase an aftermarket one compatible with AM4. The Ryzen 1800X is compared frequently to the Intel I7-6900k and the i7- 7700K. Honestly, the I7-6900K is better for gaming, but it is significantly more expensive. Do a google search of check out some videos on youtube to see some actual benchmark results. I am more than satisfied with the 1800X.

Does it support the ddr4 RAM that says it was designed for intel chipsets?

My experience with ddr4 ram on the x99 platform and recent ddr4 labeling changes make it evident that not all ddr4 on the intel cpu  platform is easily or even roughly exchangeable (speed issues aside). Though certain manufacturers have attempted to deny, minimize or avoid the issues involved, ddr4 does not, by itself, assure the purchaser compatibility with a motherboard, chipset or CPU.  Recently ddr4 product labeling has improved so that which intel cpu (chipset etc.) the ram is designed for is indicated. These labels might state "Intel Z170 platform" or " Intel X99" or the more generic "Desktop Memory Model". The most recent ddr4 advertising copy includes which current AMD platform(s) they were designed to work with. Most end users have not been exposed to ram's secondary timings or how / why to customize it. It is largely with regard to these timing that complications exist. As others have wisely said "use the motherboard manufacturer's Qualified Vendor List (QVL)". Most ram manufacturer's websites also have information regarding compatibility, often it is more  current than the motherboard's site. Plug from a fanboy: Newegg's return / exchange policy softens the blow if things go awry.

Short answer: There are no specific workstation boards now for this CPU. That said, any of the good B350/X370 boards should work well for most business applications. Gigabyte, ASRock, and ASUS all make excellent AM4 socket motherboards, and you don't have to use all the gaming specific features.

Long answer: Depending on the nature of your work, a B350 or X370 motherboard with an 1800x CPU should do well for most work applications that aren't system memory bandwidth limited. Current motherboards are dual-channel, while upcoming high end desktop boards will be quad channel. Honestly, the Ryzen platform still has a lot of bugs to work out with motherboard BIOS versions and memory compatibility. If this was to be your only work PC then I would steer you towards a comparably priced Intel platform, as it will be more stable. I think most of the issues will be worked out in the next few months with AGESA updates from AMD, as well as optimization from Microsoft and other companies who are releasing Ryzen specific updates for their software. If this is meant to be a secondary PC for some specific task then I would say you should be OK, though you may experience system instability and crashes. I use my Ryzen system for both gaming and rendering in Adobe Premiere and After Effects, and aside from the odd issue, it has been stable and getting better with each new BIOS update.

I picked up an Asus Prime B350-PLUS mobo in preparation for my new build. Would this processor be wasted on it? Should I go with a 1700, or even a Ryzen 5?

I don't think the 1800x would be wasted because of the mobo. However, depending on what type of workload you plan to use it for, you might end up with a more powerful CPU than you need. In other words, if you do a lot of video editing, video conversions, or other highly CPU dependant jobs, then I would recommend you get as much horsepower as you can afford. If you aren't primarily performing those highly CPU intensive workloads and if you are more of a gamer, save yourself $150+ by getting a great value CPU in the 1700 that comes bundled with a CPU cooler (the 1800x does not come with a cooler). If you are an overclocker, then the Ryzen x series is probably what you want, but I would recommend an x370 mobo if that was your usage case. Let me know if you have any other questions.

How many PCIe lanes does Ryzen support & how many GPU cards can I run at 3.0 ???

It has 24 3.0 lanes on the chip itself.  4 are dedicated to communication with the chipset, leaving 20 for the motherboard to utilize.  Most motherboards are sending 16 to the PCIe slots and 4 to M.2 port.  For the PCIe, most motherboards allow you to select 16x1 or 8x2.  Keep in mind that since they're 3.0, 8x is beyond the bandwidth any current card can utilize.  I'm personally running a pair of rx480's in crossfire 8x2 mode with great results.

In addition, the chipset often breaks out its 4 3.0 into quite a few 2.0 lanes to support any additional PCIe slots, some have second m.2 slots running at 2.0, etc.

I'm not aware of any motherboards that support 3 cards with ryzen, though it's theoretically possible if you use some of the chipset's 2.0 lanes for the third slot.  I would think the third card in that scenario would not work at its full potential, however, since it would be limited to something less than 4 3.0 lanes.
