will this just work on a linux system out the box?

Not really. You could mount it with ntfs3g, but you probably don't want that. The drive will need to be partitioned and formatted in whatever file system you use (eg: ext4). It will mount with ntfs3g ootb though.

Does this come with the nice looking black plate like the photos or does it look like a regular OEM hd??

That's actually a black label and I'm going to say you probably won't get that. I've got 13 of these and counting none of which have that label. All of them so far are mostly white with a circular area outlining the white printed area above the platter in black.

Mine looks like the standard label but after going to the western digital site, it looks like they updated all their labels. Probably making them more user friendly
