Would this drives unique features possibly cause issues being used as storage drive on standard desktop OS?

Iv'e been using the AV and this is my first Purple but all the AV's worked great as a regular HDD. they are just optimized for continuous writing. For customer CCTV systems I partition off a 250GB for OS and the rest for storage. Conversely a regular HDD will be dead within a few months.

..... What? Is this a hard drive or a video camera?????

These are hard drives designed for the constant writing that occurs in NVRs and DVRs. Typically video systems are "sitting" recording for weeks on end. This drive addresses heat concerns and write heads without adding additional specs for reading like other drives in the WD color series.

Hey im a gamer and was wondering if this hard drive would be able to handle a lot of gaming and downloaded games?

This hard drive is made to be written to 90% of the time, and read from 10% of the time.

As games typically don't write to a hard drive very much, I would suggest another series. The purple drives are meant to be used for recording security camera footage, so they are constantly running and being written to.

Are the WD Purple drives the best for Raid and if not which WD series drives are the best for Raid?

If would highly recommend checking out the specs for the WD Red drives if you are building a NAS or using RAID in your pc. Full details on each series on WD drives can be found on the manufaturers website.

At what RPM does this drive operate? Is it loud? does it work well in a HTPC environment?

Accepted Answer

This drive is running Intellipower which means that it could be running either 5400rpm or 5900rpm. This drive is no louder than any other drive you work normally use. As for using in an HTPC, the recommendation is to "Think Modular" meaning try to separate components if possible and keep the storage out of the HTPC. You should instead use a NAS to store the data and using a drive designed for a NAS system is best.

"It is useful to think your home theater as a modular setup with separate front-end and back-end. Your main front-end should be a super silent Home Theater PC (HTPC), which does not need to have any storage for media files, TV tuners, or DVD/Blu-ray drive.

Store all media files to a separate Network Attached Storage (NAS) or back-end home media server that also does all the heavy lifting such as, recording live TV, scraping metadata, transcoding video files and online video streams.

Finally, you can extend your media experience to other rooms by adding Digital Media Receivers (DMR) such as Roku streaming player, Apple TV or Raspberry Pi. Keep in mind that you do not need to buy everything immediately, but you can add new modules later over time."

How much recording time would you get from a 2TB hard drive we have a Lorex Security System and right now we have 7 days of recording before it writes over?

That depends on your camera count, and how many megabits of data each camera is going to use. Google cctv calculators and plug your numbers into it. You can set how many days you want to record and it will tell you how many TB you will need. Hope that helps.

Has anyone used this drive in a TIVO?

I used these for a security cameras dvr.  I think the different 'colors'  are a marketing plan,  but they make a color for NAS devices.  I think that or the purple would be fine. 
The purple ones I bought have been running 24/7 since may is 3 systems.

Question 8

So what about using this for a HTPC computer for video storage? I often have multiple HD shows being recorded at once, while someone is watching another show that was already recorded. Would this drive work well for this purpose?

This is not the drive for you. Purple WD drives are for continuous write, no matter if there are errors in the data or not. The WD Purple is primarily for DVR use. You would be better off with a Green WD or higher read/write speed HDD.

Is this the same drive as the WD20EURX?

This drive is not the same. It is the newest generation AV-GP drive from Western Digital. I have just purchased 4 and out of this order 2 were DOA. I would continue to purchase the WD20EURX if you are concerned with reliability until this drive has had more field testing.

Would it be possible to record FRAPS videos to this?

I will try to answer this question, I do not see why you could not use this to record FRAPS, I know that the WD black series has been used for this purpose. I would just recommended in whatever hard drive you purchase to find one that has 130 M/B per second or better for the FRAPS.
