Question 1

What is the difference between the A8G and the 8G and does it matter which one out of those 2 that I get? I really want to order this card today and I know I am not buying the O8G because I will tweek the card myself.

Just to let you in a secret, all GTX 1080 graphics cards will perform identically the same.  Some of these just come with factory overclocked speeds, which can be reached using software such as MSI afterburner.  The difference between ASUS Strix is only the factory overclocked speeds, which make no real difference in gaming performance.  It is best to buy the cheapest GTX 1080 card, and then overclock it using ASUS' GPU Tweak software.  Don't get caught in these "This card comes with clocks speeds of 1900mhz factory overclocked".  All GTX 1080 can overclock easily over 2000mhz.

Does this have 4k capabilities?

Yes ... it handles 4K very good. My display is an ASUS PB287Q - 3840x2160. Just about every game I play at 4K is above 60FPS, some over 100. Of course it depends on game settings and what game you play. The most demanding game I play is Star Citizen, this card handles it just fine maxed out.

does this card allow for crossfire compatibility, for example could i run two in tandem etc?

It does. With AMD it is called Crossfire and with NVIDIA it is called SLI. You can use SLI on these as well as the 1070, however anything lower tier than that will not support multiple cards. You will also want to buy the HB Bridge rather than using the bendable one you are more familiar with (which means you will want to know how many slots you will need to cover in order to connect them.

I have a Asus Z97-A motherboard. is the 1080 STRIX compatible with it?

I have been using my 1080 STRIX with an Asus Z97 board for months with zero issues. I don't recall offhand which model of their Z97 it is (I'm on my phone, not my PC), but the architecture is the same, so I can't see why it would be a problem.

Yes both the gtx 1070 and the gtx 1080 can do 2-way SLI below that however it is not possible. That being said this generation is pushing the SLI HB bridge. You can still use the older SLIs but the HB allows a faster communication rate between cards.

Does the card come with the SLI bridge or does that need to be purchased?

No, this unit does not come with an SLI bridge and you will need to purchase that separately. The units comes with 2 x ROG Cable Ties, 1 x CD and 1 x Quick Guide.

Does it run hot like their older cards? Would I need watercooling -- is what I am asking.

This card runs perfectly cool with the stock STRIX cooling unit. You will only need watercooling if you plan to do a lot of overclocking.
