This question is pretty vague so I'll try and answer this as best I can.

An internal Hard Drive is a drive that belongs inside a computer, whether it is a desktop or laptop drive. One would often describe an internal laptop drive as a "mobile drive".

A portable Hard Drive is one that often has an enclosure and can be plugged into a computer externally. One would also describe a portable Hard Drive as a "mobile drive".

So to answer your question, exactly as you put it, yes, it's both. For clarification however, this is a drive that is meant to be plugged into a computer internally, with a main focus for a small form factor computer or a laptop. The way to tell that this is a 'mobile' drive in particular is its size- 2.5 inches.

Desktop internal hard drives can be either 3.5 inches or 2.5 inches but you'd be hard pressed to find a laptop that can handle a 3.5 inch internal drive.

So yeah, your question can't be answered with one or the other because the answer would just be "yes", but hopefully my clarification can help anyone reading this to figure out if this product suits their purposes.

WD Black Label hard drives are very reliable. The current drive you have is 5200 rpm.  The new WD HD is 7200 rpm.  Faster and produces more heat.  It is better just check your laptop for heat

Does this come in the retail packaging box or is it shipped as a bare drive?

No it does not come in a Retail Box, As long it is not a Re certified. If they are New they work as New. They come in a Plain Brown Box. I have purchased many of these with no problems.

No it is not, no new hard disk is pre-formatted. it should be formatted on the machine it is to be used on.

Can this be placed into a Dell XPS 8500 for replacing the hard drive?

The answer is Yes even though the drive is not the same size. You can replace a 3.5" drive with a 2.5" even though you may have to use an adapter to install the drive securely.

The Western Digital will be faster. Faster RPMs will give the disc drive faster access to the data on the platters.

Absolutley! I run Centos v7 on my laptop and it works great. No drivers to install in any recent Linux version.

The short answer is yes. But you will need to transfer your operating system or install it from a backup. The best option for performance is to use an SSD for a replacement. If you like the laptop and just want better speed, have a computer shop do the swap.The improvement will be dramatic. The drive you listed is a good HDD.
