Power saving.... What kind of "off time" would one expect to experience in a home environment with multiple computers, but only one user. If one computer is mostly on all day would the NAS (WD My Cloud EX2) be running all day? Or on selectable preset times for back-up traffic. I assume clients would wake the NAS when it's use is needed, and can that be restricted in some way? Manual or via a schedule to preclude excess drive wear? THANKS!

Accepted Answer

The idea is that the NAS stays on all of the time so that it can accept I/O requests from clients.  That said, the NAS itself has power management features that allow it to optionally spin down its drives until they're needed.  This comes at the cost of a delay of a few seconds the first time it's accessed after which it stays fully active until inactive for a preset amount of time.  You can certainly shut off the NAS, but it will be unable to accept I/O requests while off which is inconvenient.  Also, it's power consumption is minimal.  Also, drive spindown also helps get more longevity out of the drives.

Question 2

Is it possible to increase the drive sizes as time goes on?. If one of the 4TB drives fails, can I replace it with a 6TB and then replace the other drive down the road?

The device comes configured as RAID1 (so data is mirrored identically on each drive), so if one of the drives fails, you need to replace it with another drive of the same size.

Does the 8 TB unit come with one 8 TB drive or two 4 TB drives?

Can I actually change the hard drives in this device? (For example if I swap out both 4tb drives for 8 tb drives.)
