does it perform the same as a 5600?

No it is 7.9% slower due to the L3 Cache being half of the 5600 without the integrated graphics.  To be honest that don't mean as much for gaming (-5 fps or lower 0.1% fps), but if they are both the same price then stick with the 5600 CPU not the 5600G APU.  All though those that do buy the APU have peace of mind knowing they have a backup plan if their discrete GPU up, and dies so your PC ain't a giant paper weight while you wait for a new one to arrive.

I'm using it in a  MSI b550 although it will also work in my MSI 570 Pro A (either with hdmi connector). Always update the bios for best compatibility.

If you have your own dedicated card, you'd be better off buying the 5600x.  It's $100 cheaper and will give you better performance without the integrated graphics.

Why I wonder is AMD releasing brand new CPU's, in the latter half of 2021, with PCIe 3.0 still?

PCIe 3.0 has a lower power draw.  The product is an APU.  The GPU is useful for a builder who does not wish to buy a discreet graphics card.
