Will this drive work with a SATA 3.0Gbs interface?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SATA drives are backwards-compatible with slower SATA controllers. IE: A SATA 6Gb/s drive will work with a 3Gb/s SATA-2 controller, or 1.5Gb/sc SATA-1 controller. The only catch is that the drive will only be as fast as the controller can handle.

Additionally, your controller -might- need a firmware update in order to use the full 3TB capacity.

is anyone using this hard drive in their home computer as a second storage drive (not as a C drive)?  I usually buy WD Black drives...

I use this drive in systems that record HD video. The OS and apps are installed on an SSD and the videos are saved on a pair of these drives. I also put one in my mom's TiVo. Very reliable.

I am looking to replace/upgrade the hard drive in my 2010 27" iMac.  Will this drive work in that system?

The AV-GP series hard drives are designed specifically for video surveillance. I would not recommend them for use as a boot drive.

The best choice for a boot drive on any MAC or PC is a solid state drive (SSD). Check your specifications to learn if the chassis has a SSD slot.

The SSD drive can be 250GB as it will only support your operating system. Then add your large TB SATA drive for storage of files and folders

When using this drive with an older MB (4+yrs) does WD offer a free utility so that it can be used as a 2nd drive with a single partition using it's full capacity?   Like Seagate

Main issue is that it must be formatted as a GPT drive, not MBR (master boot record) drive.  Also must have UEFI motherboard if you plan to boot from it.
