how long will a laptop last if i buy a new one about $600? just for basic browsing and light work mostly. it should last like 4 years right?
depends when you buy it and how well you take care of it.
I bought a HP DV7 in 2011 and i used it until i built a PC in 2015. I turned it on a few months ago and it still had windows 7 on it. i could access all my files but I couldnt update the web browser, steam, or my internet drivers. the only thing it gave me was the last security update from microsoft and a graphic driver.
Id say 6-8 years but it really depends if you got it at the end of a OS support period and such, but if you are tech savvy enough, people do like to provide support for certain hardware past its lifetime, but since none of those are official, its a gray area.
If you really want to just do light web brosing or Word Processing, I think Chromebooks are a great value for what they do, even light Youtube’ing but anything else, becomes an issue.

It depends on how well you take care of it, along with the specific laptop brand and model. Even if the OS reaches its EOL, you can look into Linux to give extra life to the laptop.
