Looking for advice on a PC build for game website development and testing

I’m planning a new PC build and could use some advice from people who have experience with both gaming and web development.

One of my current projects is a Geometrrydashapk community website that’s still in development. Besides the usual articles and downloads, I’m working on features like player profiles, custom leaderboards, and some interactive pages that I’ll need to test across different browsers.

My current system is starting to struggle when I have several things open at once—VS Code, a local development server, multiple browser windows, Photoshop, and occasionally a virtual machine. I also like to test games while working, so it’s not just development workloads.

I’m trying to decide where my budget will make the biggest difference.

Would you prioritize:

  • A higher-core-count CPU or a faster GPU?
  • 32 GB vs. 64 GB of RAM for this type of workload?
  • Is PCIe Gen 5 SSD storage worth it, or is a good Gen 4 drive more than enough?
  • Any cooling recommendations if the PC will be running for long development sessions?

I’m aiming for a build that will last several years without needing major upgrades, so I’d rather spend a little more now if it’s worthwhile.

I’d appreciate hearing what hardware you’re using if you do similar development work alongside gaming.

Welcome! I do a mix of game development and gaming, so your workload sounds pretty familiar.

Looking at what you’re doing, I’d put more of the budget into the CPU and RAM than the GPU unless gaming is your primary focus. An 8-core CPU is a great starting point, but if you can stretch to a 12- or 16-core processor, you’ll appreciate the extra headroom when you’re running VS Code, local servers, multiple browsers, Photoshop, a VM, and maybe a game at the same time.

I’d also lean toward 64 GB of RAM if it fits your budget. You can absolutely get by with 32 GB, but memory tends to disappear quickly once you start multitasking with development tools and virtual machines. It’s one of those upgrades that you don’t always notice until you don’t have enough.

For storage, I’d save the money and go with a good Gen 4 NVMe SSD. Gen 5 drives look great on paper, but for web development and gaming I don’t think the extra cost is justified for most people.

Don’t overlook cooling, either. If the system is going to be running for hours at a time, a quality air cooler or a good 240 mm or 360 mm AIO, combined with a case that has decent airflow, is money well spent. A quieter, cooler PC is just nicer to work on every day.

Since you mentioned wanting the system to last several years, I’d also pay attention to the platform you’re buying into. Personally, I’m a little skeptical of Intel right now because their recent platforms haven’t seemed to stick around very long before requiring a new motherboard. If long-term upgradeability is important to you, I’d probably lean toward AMD at the moment, but that’s just my opinion based on how both companies have handled platform support over the past few years.

Before I’d recommend any specific parts, though, I’d need to know a little more about what you’re looking for. A $1,500 build is going to look very different from a $2,000 or $3,000 build, so knowing your budget would make it much easier to recommend components that fit your needs.

I’d also want to know whether you’re planning to build the PC yourself or if you’re looking for a pre-built system, as that changes the recommendations quite a bit. Finally, are you looking for a clean, no-nonsense professional workstation where every dollar goes toward performance, or do you want to reserve part of the budget for aesthetics like RGB lighting, a tempered glass case, custom fans, or a particular color theme?
