what is the difference between the se drive wd4000f9yz and the re drive wd4000fyyz will be getting 4 for a raid 5 configuration ?

Performance-wise, Se drives align quite well with Re, although Re is better designed to handle a greater annual workload (550TB/year vs. 180TB/year).

The main difference between Se and Re is that the RE is more durable, spec’d to handle 3x as much data throughput over its lifetime. Also, the mean-time before failure (MTBF) rating has been decreased from 1.4 million hours for the RE to 800,000 for the SE.

The target market for Se is “bulk” storage: high-end NAS and “scale-out” architectures (where storage is added over time).  Re, a “durable” option, and Xe, a “performance” one. WD puts both Se and Re in the same tier 2 level, with Xe occupying tier 1.

I use 5 of the 4TB 7200 SE drives in raid 5 in a Areca ARC?8050 8-bay thunderbolt enclosure (i started with 3) and they work great.

Will this plug and play nicely with a 2009 Mac Pro?

I want to purchase this as a cold spare for my WD Sentinel DX4200 NAS.  Is this hot swap ready, or do I need to move over the case from the failed drive?

As great as these drives are, i would, for your read/write cycle, probably go with the RE drives as they are designed for heavier usage. Typical usage for these is NAS units / backups /archiving. I believe on the WD website they have a duty cycle recommendation for each drive type. I would follow that to see what fits your needs best.
