Yes, however this processor is geared toward overclocking. If you are not planning to overclock, the i7-4790 (non k variant) would be a better option. This processor is designed to be cooled with a powerful aftermarket solution like liquid cooling.

Intel stated that the processor will work on Z87 motherboards after a BIOS update.  If you haven't purchased the motherboard yet, I would recommend getting a Z97 instead.  Search a list of compatible motherboards on pc enthusiast and I think yours shows up.

Is there a motherboard that can use this cpu without a bios update?

My motherboard crashed last week after 5 years so I just completed building my new machine this week.  I got a ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK1 LGA 1150 motherboard.  The I7-4790K works great with out changing the BIOS.  However upgrading your BIOS with this motherboard is extremely easy. This board also has great control over the fans in you case. If you are interested in using a large air CPU cooler this board has a metal frame that screws to the back of the motherboard to help support heavy coolers.  Less chance of bending the circuit board and messing up a trace. Below are the specs for my machine.

Question 4

If the specifications doesn't specify 64bits, will it cause any problems in a 64bit system if used?

The processor (i7-4790) can be used for 32 bit or 64 bit operating systems.  Windows Vista, 7 & 8 offerings (same for other compatible operating systems) can be purchased as 32 or 64 bit systems but one version can be installed.  It is rare that a 32 bit will not run on a 64 bit system.  A program for a 64 bit system will not ruin on a 32 bit system.

If still unsure, go to the Intel website and check the specifications on the product.

Question 5

Did I receive a faulty CPU. Mine runs at 100c?
I ordered mine when it was released.
If i get replacement, I should get a better
tim version?

I've got two 4970k chips running in identical setups, well ventilated cases with multiple fans and no clutter (good wire management). Both have aftermarket heatsinks (CM EVO 212) with the fan set at 100% in the bios. One of the setups I used Cooler Master's thermal paste, one I used arctic silver 5. Both heatsinks were mounted and remounted multiple times until I got the lowest temperature.

The chip mounted with AS5 runs at 4.4ghz @ 1.2v, idling around 33'c and topping out around 75'c under "full load". it sits between 55'c and 65'c in normal gaming situations.

The chip mounted with CM's own pack-in thermal paste runs at 4.4ghz @ 1.175v (yay undervolted), idling around 29'c and topping out around 75'c under "full load". it also sits around 55'c to 65'c under gaming conditions.

BUT. and this is a very big but, prime95 small FFT test will push the AS5 chip to 100'c, and the CM paste chip to 95'c to 98'c. I'm pretty sure that they're being throttled at that thermal point, even though neither coretemp nor cpu-z show it happening. They're both -stable- there... but I can't bear to watch it. I usually shut testing down right quick.

I've never seen anything else do that except prime95. Nothing else, including stuff that fully loads all 4 cores/8 threads like handbrake video transcoding, will come close to those temps. Also according to coretemp the chip is pulling in excess of 140w in that test, when -in theory- the chip is supposed to be throttling back above 88w. I guess my motherboard has no problem letting it pull as much as it wants.

What type of heat sink does it come with?

Since this is only a preorder item I have not personally seen it. I would like to assume it is equipped with the standard latest and greatest intel Heatsink that the 4770k comes with. Naturally if you are interested in this you will be interested in overclocking and pushing this monster beyond the 5Ghz range. I always trash stock heatsinks on any processor I buy. They are usually only sufficient at stock heat temperatures.

What would be a good aftermarket cooler to get with this CPU? My case has plenty of room for reference

I did a lot of research on this topic and found a great cooler.  It is the Noctua CPU Cooler NH-U12S for around $60.  It has great reviews.  I have it in my computer with the i7-4790K and it is so quite I can't hear it.  It does a great job of keeping the CPU cool and comes with a 6 year warranty.  Good luck.

The  i7-4790k CAN POSSIBLY overheat and shut down running with stock cooler and no overclocking but otherwise, it dissipates nearly the same wattage as a stock i7/i5 Haswell you replace. It depends on your OS and workload.

I could not run 8 Windows 7 Primegrid LLR programs simultaneously because they use too much AVX2 vector code. I had to had a throttling program to enforce idle time or run other non-AVX applications. Note that the Haswell server CPU detect AVX rich code and will even DETURBO .... run at lower frequency.

Linux (Fedora and Ubuntu) seemed to be more forgiving but I think that may have been because they seem less aggressive about putting background jobs in turbo unless you messed with priority settings.

NOTE that because the 4790x deturbos less frequently, it will run faster than the simple frequency scaling.

I used the Win speccy utility to monitor frequency and the standard part seems to drop the frequency multiplier down (to 16x) more quickly than 4790k (which sticks at 40x).

Windows7 seems to be more aggressive than Linux about driving the part at TURBO 4.4ghz. You can adjust POWER OPTIONS to MAXIMUM CPU at 99% and it will run at 40x ... not kick into turbo.

I upgraded a DELL XPS and the 4790x would not "REBOOT" for some reason BUT I found that I could hold the power off button for 5-ish seconds until the internal fan turned off and then it would power on.

The DELL box only had grills large enough for 90mm fans but I do not think extra fans or size would cool the CPU much but I could not mount any 120mm without cutting metal.

Another thing to consider, if you look at new coolers, is whether you will need to remove the motherboard to make changes to the cooler mounts on the bottom of the board. The DELL cooler had hardware that did not seem to match with a better cooler mounting hardware. Since I could work around my problem workload, it was not a big deal.

It was a good investment.

Yes, the processor does come with the integrated graphics on board. Having said that though be sure you have a mainboard that has is compatible and has provisions to take advantage of the graphics capabilities of the chip.

I have an Asus B85-PLUS motherboard. Will this CPU run well with this, or would I have to also buy a Z97 type motherboard to get this chip?

You can use a B85 board from Asus if you reflash the BIOS to the newest version. Asus has released press statements they will work with Devil's Canyon processors. HOWEVER, remember this is a CPU geared to overclocking and maximizing performance and should most definitely be used with Z97 (or Z87 with a BIOS flash) to get your money's worth. If you are going to stick with B85 I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND you get the i5 version instead, or the unlocked Pentium G3258. They will match with your B85 board much better and will be cheaper
