Delorean Back to the Future

October 21, 2015 marks the time Marty McFly went back to the future in the second Back to the Future movie. The movie is a classic, but just how well did it predict Oct. 21, 2015?

The Back to the Future films were a part of my childhood. I’ve always dreamed about having the technology to travel through time and seeing life in the future. Here at Newegg, we’re really close to the original filming location of the Twin/Lone Pine Mall, so the movie is near to us physically and mentally. In fact we’re just on the other side of the freeway. To commemorate the day we are offering special deals!

Time is a funny thing. It’s hard to notice the changes while were living through them. You don’t notice how different you look unless you look back at old pictures from school. It’s hard to grasp how much life has changed since the 80s. They did get some things right while others have been drastically different.

Flying Cars

We still don’t have the flying cars as seen in the film. However we are starting to see driverless cars. From parking assistants to valet mode programming, automated cars can pick you up directly from the parking lot. It’s still too dangerous on the road with drivers on a 2D Plane and I can imagine flying a car could be worse. Flying cars probably won’t be approved unless we figure out some form of powerless lift to ensure cars wouldn’t stall and fall from the sky. We might be waiting for a while on this one.

Hover Boards

Hover Board

While we don’t have flying skateboard or hover boards as they’re called in the movie, personal transportation has changed greatly since the 80s. Just the other day I saw a person riding around the supermarket on one of those two-wheeled “hover boards.” While not as cool, it’s probably a lot more stable and they invoke anger from mall cops, just like skateboards.

Big Screen TVs

Big Screen TV

This one the film got right. No home is complete without a big screen TV. And smart TVs featuring apps like skype mean you can do more than just watch reality shows, now you can make them too.

Hovercam

Quadcopter

The Hovercam was featured in both movies and the ride at Universal Studios. While we do have Quadcopters with Cameras, these are usually remote controlled. But soon we can expect they will be able to follow the user directly. Similar to the movie, Lily is a drone which follows the user around to record action sports in HD. Expect those to ship in 2016.

Litter bug

Roomba

While we don’t have automated public trash cans yet, Roombas have been cleaning up in homes for a few years now.

Video Glasses

In Back to the Future, a few family members are using goggles to watch their favorite shows. While there have been a few versions of these over the years nothing has really caught on. We expect the Oculus Rift to fill those shoes next year.

Pepsi Perfect

Pepsi raised the bar by offering their Pepsi perfect in the classic Back to the Future bottle designs. They also made a great commercial to go along with its launch. Don’t expect to be filling up your fridge with these as they’re only producing 6,500 of them, and at $20.15 a piece, it makes for an expensive trip back in time.

Nike Power Lace Shoes

Nike already released their light up version of the Power lace shoes back in 2011, but this year they plan on releasing the power lace version. These will likely be another limited production run, so get yours while you can.

I don’t think Back to the Future did bad at all with its predictions. What other products would you like to see developed? Where do you think we’ll be in another 30 years? Let us know the comments. Also be sure to check out today’s special deals! to commemorate the movie.
