It’s almost time for this year’s Spike Video Game Awards! The show will air on the Spike channel at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, December 12th.
Every year I watch these awards with the same kind of squeamish dread that I’d get from sitting through The Human Centipede. It’s a night of awkward cringing as gorgeous celebrities, athletes and models pretend to be deeply interested in video games and nerd culture.
In fairness, Spike is getting steadily better at this. The event’s host, Zachary Levi, from NBC’s Chuck is actually a legitimate geek icon and gamer, so that’s a nice choice. Plus, one of the presenters will be NFL legend Joe Montana, the man who gave us Sports Talk Football.
As usual, the award categories will include best handheld game, best graphics, best action adventure game, best performance by a human female, best driving game, studio of the year and, of course, game of the year.
Nominees for game of the year include Batman: Arkham City, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Portal 2 and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (all of which are available on Newegg.com, of course!)
On the Spike website, fans were able to vote for the most anticipated video games for 2012. Contenders included: Bioshock: Infinite, Diablo III, Halo 4, Mass Effect 3 and The Last Guardian.
More importantly, there should be plenty of announcements for new games. From the looks of things, we should at least be seeing a new Dead Rising. Plus, Epic Games will be unveiling “a brand new franchise.”
And hey, if you don’t want to sit through the entire Awards show, you can always just go to GameTrailers.com to see the trailers and announcements on Sunday.
Do you plan on tuning in to watch the awards? Which game do you think will win game of the year?
