When Microsoft announced they would be ending support for Windows XP, they also explained why this was a necessary move for the company. Their reason was simple: Microsoft can’t keep supporting old operating systems and still move forward creating new and better products.

This makes a lot of sense because XP is over 12 years old and technology has advanced significantly in that time. Phones, TV’s, and even cars are now considered “computers” and these devices all require a powerful OS. More memory, faster processing, and higher-quality displays are just some of our current needs. We also require an OS that’s intuitive across every computing platform.

And that’s where Windows 10 steps in.

Windows 10 is Designed with Everyone in Mind – Especially You

Nearly 20% of all Windows users still run XP – making it the second most popular version of the OS. But like Satya Nadella explained at today’s Windows 10 Consumer Preview Event, “the newest version of Windows will be the most comprehensive yet.” Not only will Windows 10 work seamlessly across an incredibly broad set of devices, it will also look and feel the same – no matter where you use it.

The logic behind Windows 10 may sound similar to how Apple integrates OS X computers with iOS mobile devices but they’re vastly different. Rather than simply syncing your data so it’s accessible everywhere, Windows 10 makes it possible for you to use that data the same exact way you would across every device.

That’s a lot of devices when you consider 1.5 billion people are currently using windows.

“It’s time for a new Windows. This new Windows must be built from the ground-up for a mobile-first, cloud-first world. This new Windows must help our customers be productive in both their digital work and their digital life. This new Windows must empower people and organizations to do great things.”
– Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President of Operating Systems at Microsoft

Windows 10 Ushers in a New Chapter in Personal Computing

With the help of 1.7 million Windows Insiders, Microsoft listened to over 800,000 pieces of feedback and co-created what will one day be known as the moment personal computing was redefined. What you do with those computers is up to you, but it’ll now be easier (and more uniform) than ever before.

Whether you’re on a big screen, small screen, or no screen at all, Windows 10 is the first step toward Microsoft’s vision of a cloud-first/mobile-first world. This world is also very different than the digital one we live in today; this one is not meant to rely our devices – it’s meant to rely on us.

The goal of Windows 10 is to make interacting with technology as natural as possible. That’s why it will rely heavily on voice, pen, gestures, and gaze. Windows 10 is much more than an upgrade — it’s a new experience.

And in case you’re wondering: Yes, the old Start menu is back.
