How-To

Xbox Series X|S Storage for GTA 6: Expansion Card or USB Drive?

Xbox storage is more confusing than it should be, and GTA 6 is going to expose that for a lot of people in November. The short version: GTA 6 is an Xbox Series X|S game, so it has to be played from the console's internal SSD or from a Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can hold it, but it cannot run it.

That one rule decides most of what you should buy. The game launches on 19 November 2026, and digital pre-orders can pre-load from 12 November, so this is the month to sort it out.

Step One: Check How Much Space You Really Have

The Series X ships with a 1TB SSD, of which roughly 802GB is usable for games. The original Series S has a 512GB SSD with about 364GB usable, and there is also a 1TB Series S. Rockstar has not announced GTA 6's install size, but modern open-world games are large, and on a 512GB Series S I would assume you will need to clear space or add some.

Open Settings, then System, then Storage devices. It shows you exactly what is on each drive.

Step Two: Decide What Has to Stay Fast

Any game built for Series X|S, GTA 6 included, has to sit on fast storage to be played. Xbox One and older backward-compatible games can run straight from a USB drive. So the cheapest plan is often to move your Xbox One-era games to USB and keep the internal SSD for new releases.

Step Three: Add Fast Storage With an Expansion Card

The Storage Expansion Card plugs into the slot on the back of the console. It is a proprietary format, so a normal M.2 SSD will not work here. Only licensed cards do. Once inserted, it behaves like the internal drive, Quick Resume included.

SanDisk Optimus GX C50 Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, 2TB

The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 2TB is the one I would buy. It is officially licensed, the listing says it matches the console's SSD performance, and 2TB is more than double the space a Series X gives you for games out of the box. If you only need breathing room, the SanDisk Optimus GX C50 1TB is the same card at half the capacity.

Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, 2TB

Seagate made the original expansion cards, and they are still the reference. The Seagate Storage Expansion Card 2TB and the Seagate Storage Expansion Card 1TB work with both Series X and Series S. Between SanDisk and Seagate at the same capacity, I would buy whichever is available. They do the same job.

Step Four: Add Cheap Space for Everything Else

A USB drive is where your back catalogue lives. Here the choice is between a hard drive for capacity and an SSD for faster transfers.

WD_BLACK P10 6TB Game Drive for Xbox

The WD_BLACK P10 6TB Game Drive for Xbox is a portable hard drive on USB 3.2 Gen 1, with speeds listed up to 130MB/s. WD says it holds up to 150 games. The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox 5TB is the equivalent from Seagate, also on USB 3.2 Gen 1.

If you shuffle games back and forth often, an SSD saves a lot of waiting. The WD_BLACK D30 Game Drive SSD for Xbox, 1TB uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 and lists speeds up to 900MB/s. WD's own wording is clear about the limits: play and store Xbox One games, archive Series X|S games. If you also want a drive for a PC or laptop, the Samsung T9 2TB portable SSD does the same storage job and is rated up to 2,000MB/s on a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port.

My Setup Advice

Series S with 512GB: add a 1TB expansion card and move older games to a USB drive. Series X with a crowded drive: a 2TB expansion card is the cleanest fix. Big back catalogue: a WD P10 or Seagate Game Drive for storage. Do the shuffle before 12 November and the pre-load will have room. More options are in Newegg's Xbox storage expansion card listings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play GTA 6 from an external USB drive on Xbox? No. Games built for Xbox Series X|S must run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. You can store them on USB and move them back to play.

Can I use a regular M.2 SSD in my Xbox Series X? No. The expansion slot uses a proprietary card format, so you need a licensed Storage Expansion Card such as the Seagate or SanDisk models.

How much usable storage does an Xbox Series S have? The original 512GB Series S has about 364GB available for games. The Series X's 1TB drive has about 802GB available.

How big is GTA 6 on Xbox? Rockstar has not published the install size yet. Pre-loading for digital pre-orders starts on 12 November 2026.

Is a USB SSD worth it over a hard drive? For moving games between drives, yes, it is much quicker. For simply storing a large back catalogue, a hard drive gives you more space for the money.
