Does the "Intel Core i7-6850K 15M Broadwell-E 6-Core 3.6 GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W BX80671I76850K Desktop Processor" come with a heat sink and fan, or do those need to be bought separately?

The Intel i7-6850K dose not come with a heat sink and fan. You will need to purchase a CPU cooler separately. However before you buy the cooler, make note to check that it will function with the LTA2011-V3 socket.

Also, check that it not only fits in your case of choice but that it is also compatible with your motherboard and RAM. I have purchased coolers before that ether cover up the top PCI-E slot, cover up the RAM slot completely, do not leave enough room for some of the taller RAM out there, or do a combination there of.

Finally, check that it comes with thermal paste. Last cooler I purchased did not come with it and while the paste is relatively cheap, the disappointment of not being able to use your PC because of it is agonizing.

I tell you this because it ALL happened to me... so... yea.

is this 64bit supported? asking because the specs doesnt show if it is.

Yes, I believe all of inlet's processors after the P4 have 64 bit support. I am using it with the 64 bit version of Windows 10 Pro and I overclocked it to 4.4 GHz with minimal tweaking and Corsair Hydro Series H115i . This chip flies!

What´s the difference between this one and the 6800k?

the main difference besides clock speed is that the 6850 has 40 pcie lanes so you can run Crossfire or SLI with both cards running at x16 each. the 6800 only has 28 lanes so you can only run one GPU at x16 and the other GPU at x8 (or other device that utilizes less lanes, i.e., sound card, usb 3.1/3.0 or M.2 SSD, etc.)

Do i need water cooling, or can I just use a more basic $30 heatsink + fan? I won't be overclocking it.

You dont need water cooling for this cpu. A regular hs/f will do the job just fine, as long as you dont OC.. if you plan on OCking.. then I suggest an adequate HS/F or W/C setup.

Max Ram.. Not sure what your wanting to know. memory ( ram ) i went with the i7-6850 and for ram i went with corsair 32 GB of ram but you can go up to 64 gb also. For hardrive i went with corsair ssd 960 gb I thoght with having a ssd hardrive 32 GB woulb be more than enough. Your power supply needed is not based just on the CPU needs. You have to know what your motherboard, video card, and all other hardware requirements for watts of power usage along with your CPU to determine what you need and what format your board is like example, ATX.

How much better would this be versus a 6700k?

It depends on what you use your pc for. If you want to game and web browse, go with the 6700. Pretty certain it has better single core performance. On the other hand, if you do a lot of video editing or do heavy mutu-tasking regularly, then maybe look into the broadwell-e line-up. 15mb of L3 cache is probably more than the average person needs. The 6700k has proven to be a solid contendor in single or even dual core gaming.

Question 9

What CPU cooler would you recommend for this?  The idea of water cooling scares me so I'd like to go with the old school format of air cooling.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I used a Corsair H115i cooler, and I actually found it easier to install than my previous air cooler. I got my 6850K overclocked to 4.2 GHz stable. If you get the H115i, the manual doesn't mention you have to plug the SATA plug into a SATA power connector to power the pump.

Years ago I purchased ASUS P9X79 Deluxe motherboard and I never installed it or used it.
It supports the 2nd generation intel core i7 processor family for the LGA 2011 socket.

My question is... would this processor work for my motherboard / is it WORTH installing / buying parts for this motherboard due to its age (it's about... 5 years old now?) -- I need answers -- thank you!!

I can't speak to that motherboard without looking that up for you, but I can tell you the 6850k is awesome and worth every penny I paid when it just came out, and especially worth it at the current price.
