Question 1

Does it come with power and SATA cable to connect with motherboard?

Accepted Answer

It's a bare drive. Open your PC case and you should see maybe an extra SATA cable & power. If you don't have extra, just a few more dollars and Newegg will fix you up.

Question 2

dose this come with any cableing?

Accepted Answer

no, drives havent come with cables in a while now

Question 3

is this brand new drive?

Accepted Answer

Yes it is. The lower price is because it is made for an OEM application. It works just fine in any 3.5 inch hard drive bay.

Question 4

Is the Seagate software required or can the bios be configured to see the drive? If the software is required how can an OS be installed?

Accepted Answer

I'm not sure what the Seagate software is that you are referring to as nothing is included with the drive (unless you get a retail boxed one). You can either install an OS or use it as a secondary drive without any additional software.

Question 5

This bare drive is for a new build. Does a new case usually have the mounting hardware?

Accepted Answer

Most cases these days come with the hardware, as most hard drives are mounted with a quick disconnect rubber grommet. I believe all you will get with a bare hard drive is the drive itself. It may have the screws attached, but they might not be necessary with the newer cases. I would check your new case and if it is set up for easy pop-off you should have received at least four of the screws. In any case, check and buy what you need after you purchase the hard drive, which won't have the bigger rubber screw in grommets.

Question 6

Why did you choose this?

Accepted Answer

Size and price. There have been times in the past when Seagate drives had a LOT of bad drives, but for the last couple of years, they seemed to have fixed the problem. I have purchased several lately with satisfaction. SIZE and PRICE!! Great value.

Question 7

I installed mine to a new rig a few days ago. I downloaded a large file from Unreal Engine to it which was 38gb. I later decided to delete that file. As it was deleting my HDD started making a thumping noise. It has only done this with the large load, for several minutes. Is this a sign that my product is defective?

Accepted Answer

Hard to day whether it is truly defective, but a "thumping noise" from a standard HD is generally not a good thing. However, you might be misinterpreting normal mechanical sounds as problems, so unless the HD is not performing normal functioning as it should I would simply monitor it to check that it continues functioning properly.

Question 8

Will this fit in a PS4?

Accepted Answer

It is a standard sized desktop hard drive in height worth and depth. I don't know if PS4 needs the smaller laptop form factor or not, but if it does this won't fit.

Question 9

From the picture it shows the insides of the drive, does it really not have a cover?

Accepted Answer

The picture shows what is inside the hard drive (HDD). All HDDs look similar on the inside as this Seagate. Some will have more discs; the round shiny object - hope I'm not sounding too simplistic. And, a few other items, but still similar. Anyway, as the Hugh, and certainly lovely, Jass stated, all drives ship with covers. If the drive was exposed to anything but a clean room during build, even a small particle of dust would usually destroy the sensitive components on the inside. On another note. I just purchased a 6TB HDD and it was for a new security system. though it could have been as an additional HDD for a computer. In any case, the HDD did not come with any mounting screws, so unless to are replacing a failed HDD, make sure you have what you need to install it. If you are building from scratch, most if not all cases come with the parts you need.

Question 10

Is this drive SMR or CMR?

Accepted Answer

SMR, Yes/No You will have to make up your own mind.

Seagate issued this statement on April 21: “Seagate confirms that we do not utilize Shingled Magnetic Recording technology (SMR) in any IronWolf or IronWolf Pro drives – our NAS solutions family. Seagate does not market the BarraCuda family of products as being suitable for NAS applications, and does not recommend using BarraCuda drives for NAS applications. Seagate always recommends to use the right drive for the right application.”
