What do the designations SSD, SAS and the other ones mean? I am wanting to add a second hard drive to my HP Desktop and all I know for sure is that the drive already in it is totally silent.

If it is a smaller capacity in your desktop it could very well be an SSD (Solid State Drive) kind of like the memory cards in digital cameras (no moving parts). An SAS is just a type of drive commonly found in servers (Serial Attached SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)). You should be able to find out what kind of connection your computer has to add another hard drive or to replace it. I'd guess that if the computer is only a couple years old, odds are that you have a SATA connection. Don't confuse the type of connection with the type of drive. SSD (Solid State Drive), SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive), HDD (Hard Disk Drive) all convey what type of drive they are. SATA, SAS, and SCSI all refer to the type of connection they make to your computer. I hope this helped explain some of the different acronyms.
