Does this work as a regular hard drive without having to use it as surveillance?

Question 2

Would this be a good choice for a 24/7 NAS? Or do I need an RE level drive? (aside from expense, I'm very happy with the RE drives I bought 5 years ago- still going strong)

You need an RE drive if your NAS is in a Raid configuration.  The Purple series is meant for non-raid 24/7 applications.  You might also look at the Red series of drives.

Do these Purples work in regular PC use as well as Blues and Blacks?
I am thinking of using one as a second drive to back up an SSD.

Yes they do. These are built to be on 24 hours a day and have data constantly written and erased from it. I would recommend a Green drive over a purple drive. Green drive is programmed to spin down after periods of inactivity to save the drive's life and save power. Red drives are built for RAID units.

Think of these as cars. If you are a city driver and a commuter, a sports car or big beefy truck will do the job but a fuel efficient car will work better for you.

WD has several different types of drives.
Purple is for surveillance systems
Green is for storage and it saves power
Red is for RAID Units
Black is for extensive reading and writing

how many days of consistent storage?

Depends on your settings, Mine is setup to do a picture every 5 seconds, and to record real time whenever something triggers the motion sensor. With 3 cameras running, i have video going back 5 months to when I set up this system. The cameras record in 720p. 
The drive still has 40GB available. The motion sensors get triggered a lot.

I would not recommend Laview cameras. I put 3 on my house and they are junk. I have had 2 occasions of vandalism at night  and the cameras caught nothing.   The night vision sucks. customer support is non-existent.

Sorry for the extremely late reply. Yes it should be. It's pretty compatible with vast majority of DVR systems from what I understand. I use KGuard. Plugged In, formatted and it's running like a champ.

What is the drives rpm speed?

According to the Specifications sheet that I found on WD website, it says that the RPM is "Intellipower." I don't know exactly what this is but I think it has to do with varying the speed depending on how much is actually necessary - it helps save on power consumption, hence the name. Hopefully this helps a little bit!
