All I can say is that WD2000FYYZ is quiet.  (I have 2)  I also have one WD2002FAEX, which I have had for several years, but it is also quiet.  Neither model has tick and clack during read write.

Can this be used as a back-up storage drive in a docking station for a WIN 10 computer?

Yes, but for just intermittent usage it's a waste. The gold/datacenter series are designed for 24/7 usage. For just a docking/backup role I would go with a less expensive series.

The one(s) I received were new and unused. I don't remember whether I bought 1 or 2 at that time, but these are my favorite hard drives.

I read that SSD drives should be primary drives. What does SSD mean?  Would this Enterprise drive be good for every day, prime drive? Home use, Windows 7 x 64 Home Premium.

SSD stands for Solid State Drive. It's a hard drive based soley on flash memory. Yes, your primary partition (what your operating system is installed on) will boot, run, and perform faster on a SSD. The enterprise HDD that you're asking about could serve as your primary, home use drive but it's more intended for networked storage appliances in a corporate environment. I would recommend buying a 128GB or 256GB SSD for your personal use. You'll be more satisfied, even though it may cost a little more. I hope this helps.

I tried to install this drive in a Mac Pro tower. I found the screw hole to be significantly less deep than other drives. The Mac Pro comes with a carrier with standard length screws for the drive holes. Is this a flaw in this particular drive? I noticed on the sides a small pilot hole had been drilled. The anti-static bag was sealed. I am distributed. I do not want to damage the plugs inside my Mac. I don't understand why something that is standardized has been altered in this drive. Please advise.

I wrote about short mounting holes on the bottom of the above drive. I found this on the WD site. Since the Mac Pro drives mount from the bottom, this is important information an should be included in your description of this drive and any other that have this change. I know have to find shorter screws that will mount properly in the drive carrier. If I cannot I will be returning the drive. The information about his change is on the WD site:

With the release of our new SAS and SATA WD 3.5" Form Factor products, we want to be sure that our customers are aware that the bottom hole screws have reduced depth penetration, while still meeting the requirements as specified by the Small Form Factor (SFF Committee) for industry standards. As a result, some of the screws being used in previous configurations may not be acceptable for these newer products. This change has been made in order to allow for additional space to be used to add additional platters inside the drive.

NOTE
Note: The majority of enterprise mounting configurations use side mountings. Side mounting holes have undergone no changes at all to location or screw depth, so the average user does not need to worry about these modifications to the internal drives.

I would never use an old style HD for anything except backups.

What is the difference between the sata ultra 512e and 512n ??

512e is a drive that is based on 4k sectors but has a firmware that can emulate 512 byte sectors. 512n is for a drive that is native 512 byte sectors.
