Seagate BarraCuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good price, very large size. No complaints about heat or speed.

Cons: I bought 2 of them and less than a month later the SMART status on one of them is listed as Failing. Luckily, it's my Time Machine backup drive, but still, I can't remember the last time I had a drive die on me.

Overall Review: Not sure if this was a coincidence, but my confidence in these drives is a bit less now.

Pros: I know have 12 of these drives. All are working perfectly. I have never heard a click or clunk or any other noise out of these drives. They were purchased at different times stating about a year ago. That latest was purchased last week. Read Other thoughts below.

Overall Review: As has been mentioned quite a few times in these reviews.... People that heard clicking and then went to a larger power supply, no longer had any clicking or problems. It would appear these drives like a little more power. I am currently running 12 in a server that can take 20 drives. I add a new one each time I need more Space. I am running a 750 watt power supply. If at any point I hear any click I will upgrade the power supply and post here. Even people claiming to be computer techs don't bother to try this.

Pros: Fast, fairly quiet, no problems running a few of these in a RAID0 array for many months.

Cons: Low lifespan, had one of the 3 I purchased fail on it's SMART status within 2 months, and another outright die after 4 months without warning.

Overall Review: Seagate replaced the dead drives quickly and painlessly, but it was a hassle to lose some data and have to go fetch the rest to restore my previous set-up.

Overall Review: Make sure to update it's firmware to the latest revision. Seagate makes them available to the general public fixing issues seen by other customers and making the drives run more efficiently. All Hard Drive companies are unable to test 100% of their product coming off the line. They use AQL standards and only test a certain number out of each lot. I personally like to use Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows. Run the "Write Zeroes" test and this will definitely let you know if you have a faulty drive.

Pros: 2Tb!

Cons: Massive failure rate for me. These are for my backup server and I bought qty 40. Had to RMA 20? of them by now. There's been so many I've lost count. One or two from bad sectors.. Most are from the mechanism suffering click death. On of the RMA'd drives came back from Seagate DOA. Um, hello? Want to check the replacement drive before you send to the customer?!?

Overall Review: I was very strong in my conviction when I called Seagate and wanted to advance RMA 14 of them. They gave me free shipping, but no advance replacement so I'm still out the time waiting for the "good" ones to come back. Western Digital's RMA process is MUCH EASIER and they don't CHARGE you for advance replacement.

Pros: Large capacity, perfect for storing all my media and back up files. Seagate RMA process is fairly easy.

Cons: The first drive died in 2 months. I got a refurbished unit, lasted me 4 months. Just died today. I was barely able to back up my data before it died. They both had the click of death. In comparison i have 5 other hard drives that ive owned just as long or longer that have yet to have a single problem. Stay away from these drives unless you like spending your money on RMA shipping.

Overall Review: Seagate's 1TB or lower offerings have lasted me very long and performed great. It seems anything over 1TB from them is full of problems. I am seriously considering never buying a Seagate product again.

Pros: Replaced the original defective drive with a new, not refurbished drive when I complained.

Cons: First drive died with click of death in 35 days. Replacement drive, new and fresh from Seagate, died with click of death in 45 days.

Overall Review: Over the years I have purchased many hard drives from NewEgg and I have had only 3 drives with infant mortality. All three were Seagate, made in China. The cheap price isn't worth it.

Pros: Lots of space

Cons: Bought two drives. One of them was broken. Seagate support actually charged me $20 to cross ship a new drive. First time I've been charged to repair a hard drive under warranty. The other drive is working so far, but you get what you pay for - it is very slow.

Overall Review: I've been a Seagate customer for 15 years. The next drive will not be Seagate. Hope their $20 was worth it.
