The Seagate BarraCuda NE-ST8000DM004 is an 8TB, 5400 RPM, 3.5-inch SATA internal hard drive with a 256MB cache, suited to desktop users who need high-capacity storage for games, media, and everyday files.
Recommended For
- Desktop users who need a large secondary drive for storing and reading movies, photos, music, or other files that are accessed more often than they are rewritten.
- Home users who want an 8TB destination for occasional, mostly sequential backups and can wait for large transfers to finish.
- Desktop builders adding bulk storage for large files they mainly read back, rather than constantly edit or overwrite.
- Users who need high-capacity storage in a desktop PC and whose workload is moderate; Seagate lists a 55 TB/year workload rate limit for this model.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- When a desktop is running short on space for movies, music, photos, and other large files, this drive can serve as a roomy secondary library; files are practical to keep and retrieve, while browsing and loading will feel slower than on an SSD.
- For a game collection that is mostly archived, the drive can hold installers and less-used titles to free SSD space; launching and loading games will be slower than from an SSD, and frequent large updates or file changes may take longer.
- When making an occasional copy of a large photo, video, or document collection, it can provide desktop backup or archive space; because this is an SMR drive, long or repeated write jobs can slow down, so keep another copy of important files.
- For storing large files that are written once and then read back—such as finished video projects or an older media collection—it fits an archive-style workflow; it is less suitable as a scratch drive for frequent rewrites or sustained write-heavy work.
