Question 1

Has anyone successfully installed this 2.5 2TB drive into a PS4?  When I try to start in Safe mode the drive just makes a ton of noise but system never boots

Yeah, I got it installed without a problem. Just watch those YouTube videos about replacing PS4 hard drive: how to boot in the safe mode along with a connected wired PS4 controller and a USB flash drive with the saved PS4 update folder within a folder with all caps folder title.

I did run into the problem of the 1st booting in the safe mode after the new hard drive was installed. What I did was held the power button down for about +15 seconds, this will make the PS4 boot in the safe mode and then do a hard power shut down since the power button is still held down. Wait about +15 seconds before powering up the PS4 in safe mode, holding the power button down for about +5 seconds until you hear a few beeps and then let go of the power button with the controller already connected to the left USB and the flash drive connected to the right USB slot before the booting.

This worked for me, my PS4 is the 1st model that has the power and eject L.E.D. sensors instead of the 2nd model which the L.E.D. sensors are replaced by buttons for the power and eject.

This 2 TB FireCuda hard drive rocks.

I can not tell for sure from this product description. Is this a pure solid state drive, NOT a hybrid? In other words, ALL the memory is solid state, no moving disk parts?

This is a hybrid drive. Only 8gb are solid state, the rest is standard hard drive. You are looking for an SSD not an SSHD.

I know it says it's for a laptop, but can it be used for a desktop?

Yes, may need mounting bracket.  Or best is to buy same for 3.5" desktop hard drive which is faster than 2.5" laptop drive.

It looks like it works with the PS4 Pro, but will it work in the PS4 Slim?

Yes.  All three versions of PS4 will take the 2.5" HDD.  But...If you want to save a few dollars go with a straight 7200rpm drive since the PS4 games may not take advantage of the SSD part of this drive.  Some games will use it but it is hit or miss.  If you can get a SSD.  That will make it scream!!!

Will this work as an external hard drive ?

Yes....just buy an enclosure that has universal mounting for 2.5” and 3.5” hard drives

will this work with the first ps4 not the pro or slim but the first one?

It will work in all of them. Its slimmer than the hard drive that comes in all models, but it fits just fine. I used the 1TB version in my original PS4 and the 2TB when I upgraded to the PRO.
