do you need to purchase a SATA cable or does the cable come with the drive?

You'll need to purchase one unless you already have some. Also, the screws won't match up with a lot of trays. So you'll need to keep that in mind as well.

How does Newegg ship these? in a retail box or just OEM with sparse packing?

I purchased two of these about a month ago.  The two drives arrived in a larger box with some cushion around the OEM boxes, but the OEM boxes themselves contain an air bubble container that completely covers the drive and the anti-static bag.  Both drives worked immediately and survived a Drobo replacement process where they get filled with redundant data for the storage array with not a single problem.  (If I get drive failures it's almost always the first week OR after many years of constant service.  No issues with these 8's)

Would it work as an external drive for the PS5?

So I don't know the exact requirements for the PS5, so I can't give a firm answer.  I can say this isn't an ideal drive though for an external drive, depending on how you are going to use it.  It's best in a NAS, which is what it's designed for, and the NAS is supposed to have a good amount of airflow to cool the drives, because this particular drive can get hot.  If you're going to put this into a single drive enclosure, I'd get a drive that doesn't get as hot personally, so, something more on the lines of a 5900 RPM drive, or if you want speed and capacity, then a Seagate EXOS, but not their 8TB or less.  More on the lines of their X12 - X14 models because they run cooler.

But if it has a connection for SATA and says it accepts any SATA 6Gbs then sure.

Will this drive work in a Western Digital EX2 NAS enclosure?

Will this work in a regular desktop PC, or is it meant for server racks?

This uses a standard SATA connection and works just fine in a standard PC that has a SATA header and SATA power connector. I bought this model drive two years ago and it's still chugging away.

My dad says that hard drives should never have the os on them why is that?

Not sure, you can put an operating system on a harddrive though. A hard disk drive (HDD) like this one isnt as fast reading and writing as a solid state drive, bit they are perfectly fine to run an OS on. My laptop has a HDD and I run windows 10 on it, snd I use the Seagate Iron Wolf 8TB hard drive to run my Synology Network Attached Server (NAS) which also uses an OS. If I had the funds I would use a solid state drive for an OS and applications/software and HDD for music, photos, books, and video since the HDD are cheaper and solid state is faster, but you can do whatever fits your needs and budget.

Read several reviews about the QA with the manufacture and how well the drive is working, but on the same hand the reviews are two plus years old, It would be nice to hear from those still using the Seagate IronWolf 8TB and other HDD's are they still working well, or have there been issues? I have had WD Black drives for some time and only had real issues with three drives over about 15 Plus years. For a 6TB WD and this 8TB drive the price is about the same.
I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone still using the Seagate IronWolf HDD's after X amount of yrs.

The Seagate IronWolf 8TB NAS Hard Drive is considered reliable by many users but has been criticized for being loud, experiencing failures within a short period, having nonstandard mounting holes, heat issues, and poor packaging. Thinking of building an open rig computer and using these drives (24*7 operation), what is the noise level of the Seagate Ironwolf, would you recommend them for an open rig? Also still talking noise level, how do the Ironwolf compare to the Ironwolf Pro or Barracuda or even the WD Red (all 8TB capacity)?

The IronWolf is a quiet drive with the same noise level as the IronWolf Pro.  I can't really tell when the drives are spun up and working in an open rig.   I use these in external enclosures and the only sound I hear is from the cooling fans of the enclosures.    The Barracuda drives are louder.  I only have evaluated one of the current Barracuda drives so my sample size is small.    The WD Red Drives are slightly louder than the IronWolf drives even though they are 5800 rpm.    HGST 7200 rpm NAS drives are definitely the loudest drives that I have.
