Pros: Fast speed, quiet, and very nice looking
Cons: -
Overall Review: I really like the looks of this drive, both the color and the slim design. I get good transfer speeds also with it. I mainly am writing this review to make a comment about its sleep mode. This drive is set by default to run constantly and never sleep. I was not happy with that as it will shorten its life. However I learned that the Seagate Dashboard software has an option to set the sleep time. When you install/load the software, click on the red drive icon on the upper left side of the screen window. Then for me, it takes over 30 seconds before the options will appear where you can set the sleep time. I don't know why the delay but its there. Another good thing about setting it is that it seems to store the setting on the drive or firmware itself, so you can then use it on other devices and have it go to sleep at the set time. I'm using mine with an Android media player (Minix x8-h)
Pros: Extremely Small: I was actually a little surprised when I pulled it out of the box; I expected a 4TB to be larger, but it was only about the size of my hand. Fast speeds: It got an average speed of about 105MB/s while transferring a 30GB file from my SSD, however, it only got 35MB/s write and 65MB/s read when hooked up to my NAS. This is probably due to the USB ports on it. Easy to Use: Using the drive itself is just plug 'n play and the various utilities shouldn't prove to be much more trouble. Free 2 years of cloud storage (200GB worth) Can backup Facebook and Flickr photos Solid construction
Cons: Only one year warranty: I wouldn't consider it a dealbreaker, but you might if you're going to be lugging it around everywhere and backing up a lot of important files on it.
Overall Review: There's nothing particularly noteworthy about this drive, but it's a very solid buy if you're looking for a external backup drive. I can't say more much other than that you won't be disappointed.
Pros: - Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Driven model STDR4000100 arrived very quickly from newegg. Item was well packaged and the box arrived undamaged. - The drive has 4TB capacity and is currently the highest capacity portable hard drive I could find. - The quality of build and materials used are excellent. - My Windows 10 Pro PC had no trouble detecting and configuring this drive automatically. The hard drive’s formatted capacity is 3.63 TB (NFTS). - The file transfer speeds to and from the hard drive hoover around 110 Mb/s on USB 3.0 connection. - The file transfer speeds slow down to about 28 MB/s on USB 2.0 connection. - The drive is USB bus powered. Even a single USB 2 outputs enough power to operate this drive. No external power source is required. - I had previously installed Seagate’s NFTS driver on my MacBook Pro. Once I connected the hard drive to my MacBook, it was immediately visible. Free NFTS driver for Mac OS sets Seagate apart from other hard drive makers. I love the fact that I can take NFTS formatted external Seagate drive and simply plug it in to my MAC. I transferred 30 GB folder back and forth between my MAC and the drive. The process is trouble free and it just works. - Your MAC computer will have to erase and reformat this hard drive to HFS+ file system if you want to use this hard drive as Time Machine backup. - The unit comes with complementary 2 years of 200GB of cloud storage provided by Microsoft OneBox. This is a valuable perk. I use OneBox to automatically backup all my photos from my phones and tablets to one central location in the cloud. The registration can be done through the setup program. The serial numbers are prepopulated. The process has 4 steps and includes uploading a file to OneDrive and creating a document in OneDrive. - If you install Seagate Dashboard, you will be able to create PC backups and have access to add on features as explained below: - You can back up all your photos straight from your Facebook and Flickr accounts to the hard drive with a simple and quick process. If you choose to back up you Facebook phots they will be saved into 3 different folders: Mobile Uploads, Profile Photos and Timeline Photos. If you are a prolific Facebook user, you might find this feature useful. - Additionally, you can install Lyve application which is designed to share photos and videos between PC and mobile devices.
Cons: - Only one year warranty.
Overall Review: - While not a con, at this point, I would love to see a USB C port on this Hard Drive. - No encryption software is provided. However, there are plenty of free/inexpensive programs that can help with encryption. - A have tested this hard drive for about 3 weeks now and I love it. This small, portable hard drive is packing 4 TB of storage, excellent transfer speeds, and pleasant design. If you want maximum storage space for very reasonable price, this is a hard drive to buy.
Pros: The unit has 4TB of storage and utilizes usb 3.0 speeds. Can backup data and pics on your social media sites. Additional benefit is you get some space on the Cloud. The device has a relatively small form factor for having 4tb of storage. Great for backing up files on your computers, storing pics, music, and videos. Unit is powered by a usb cable and runs without generating any measurable heat. Running some read/write benchmarks on various software applications I received these scores. CrystalDiskMark 4.03 x64 Read 134.2 MB/s and Write 126.8 MB/s ATTO Disk v 2.47 Read 126.2 MB.s and Read 116.4 MB/s AS SSD v 1.8.5611.... Read 127.28 MB/s and Read 112.15 MB/s HD Tune 2.55 Max Read 139.5 MB/s and Average Read 118.2 MB/s
Cons: I see no cons other than the short time frame this is warrantied for.
Overall Review: Time will tell how long the unit will maintain operations before succumbing to issues. You are getting some good bang for your buck for this amount of storage. And though the HDDs in this device are running at 5400 rpms the read/write benchmarks utilizing usb 3.0 are good.
Pros: - Fast transfer speeds (~132MB/sec Max write from SSD large size files, 2-3MB/sec write with multiple small files on USB3) - Enclosure its small compared to the external HDD of yesteryear. - 200gb Cloud storage included - Win 10 compatible even if not listed in specs.
Cons: - USB3 Micro B cable could be a little more sturdy if intended for mobile use. The casing on mine began to twist and break down after a few weeks of use, maybe using a braided nylon cover instead would help. - If using with a Mac you will need to either re-format the drive to the correct file-system or install the storage drivers off the Seagate website. While this is not really a "con" it is something of note if you are a multi-OS user or buy the drive and have no internet access at that time. - The enclosure should be more rugged in my opinion if they intend it to be used as as mobile drive, since this is older "spinning rust" tech I like to see as much shock and other protection as possible. - 1 Year warranty, while I understand that they can only cover so much with a mobile drive and one that is not solid state I would rather they had a 2 year parts/labor warranty to be more competitive with other manufacturers.
Overall Review: They never stop amazing me how much storage they can cram into mobile hard drives these days, spinning rust has never seen higher capacity in this form factor! I did not encounter any issues using the device on my Win 10 PC even though it was not listed on the box or online in the specs, however if you are a Mac user you will have to re-format or use their driver if you do not wish to format. The only problem I see with this drive is that the included Micro-B cable is not that rugged as well as the plastic enclosure the drive is contained in. Since the drive is not solid state and intended to be a "portable backup solution" I would want that data as safe as possible when on the move. While the cable or enclosure never failed me during my testing, its always those occasions you do not plan for that are the problem. Either way this drive is a great performer for the price and anyone looking for a mobile bottomless pit of storage in a small package should look no further than this drive, especially for the value!
Pros: Its hard to believe how far we've come with portable hard drive enclosures. It feels like only a few years ago that I was paying $1/GB for this kind of external storage at Best Buy for the first Passport device and even just a few years ago, we started getting massive amounts of 3-4TB storage amounts in rather large 3.5" based drives that needed external power. That's all changed now and Seagate has managed to pack 4TB in a small portable form factor. Pros: +Amazingly small for a massive amount of storage. This drive is about the thickness of a deck of cards and the size of a 2.5" HDD/SSD. It is only 2x thicker than a 1TB Seagate Slim Backup Plus, but it holds 4x as much data! +Powered over USB 3.1 Micro-B! This is the USB micro+appendage connector and the drive comes with a good sized cable that has some length but isn't too long to be cumbersome. +Fast. For a 5400RPM drive (it uses the world's highest capacity Seagate/Samsung drive). I copied about 100GB worth of large files, games and digital movies from an SSD and saw 105-130MB/s Write speeds and then copied that same 100GB to my SSD array and saw 110-135MB/s transfer speeds. Pretty amazing for a 5400RPM drive over USB 3.0! Very impressed! +Works fine with Windows 10 even if the box doesn't say it. Also comes with Install software onboard that directs you to a Seagate page, you can install a driver from Paragon Driver that allows compatibility with Mac OS X. +Cool and quiet. Does not get warm and it is inaudible. +Comes with some additional features that Seagate supports including 200GB of OneDrive free storage for 2 years for your most important data and some cloud-based sharing software called Lyve.
Cons: -"Actual Size" Measurement on box is inaccurate! Seagate may want to revisit this box art as it may lead to false advertising claims. Still, it is hard to be upset with this device because it is excellent size, performance, price and capacity. -Mostly plastic, nothing outstanding in terms of build quality or looks, but not ugly either. -Feel the warranty could be a bit longer than 2 years for a backup type device, especially one that is mobile, but still not bad at this price point. I would still consider keeping a backup of your most important data on the cloud or on a redundant NAS, especially if you plan to take this mobile. Since it is still mechanical, I am not sure how resistant it will be to drops/dings.
Overall Review: This is a great storage drive for those who travel a lot and have ultra portable devices like Surface Pros, Ultrabooks, or Tablets and need additional storage but don't want to carry around larger external storage devices. It's also great for those who want to downsize their backup footprint without sacrificing capacity and speed. The fact this thing only requires USB power is really amazing as it is larger than some of my enclosed 3TB and 4TB external units. I'm sure they use a lot less power too and they are much quieter!
Pros: I was shipped this unit some time back for testing, but a terrible car crash (danged drunk drivers!) nearly killed me shortly after the holidays and caused me to get backlogged on my Eggxpert reviews. It's a miracle I haven't been blackballed from the program. This hard drive is extremely similar to a 1TB model that I was sent a few years ago, with some pretty big improvements. The case feels much more sturdy and rugged, the included cable is longer, the capacity is (obviously) four times as large, and it is considerably faster. Because of my personal delays, I actually put it to more use than I usually do a test item before writing the review. This drive can perform all expected tasks of an external drive easily and with aplomb. I have used it to shuttle large amounts of data between my office and customer sites, used it with Backup Exec as well as Windows Server's integrated backup, imaged to and from it in Ghost32 from a DOS environment, all in various OS's including live ones like the WinPE builds on my Hiren's USB as well as a few Linux distros, and as I type this a backup of my domain controller is being written to it for use to run a bare metal restore to dissimilar hardware (we're upgrading, yay!). It never misses a beat no matter what I throw at it. I haven't checked with a thermometer, but as far as I can tell there is no significant heat produced by the case, so it is dispersing the heat of the drive very well, but then again it's only a 5400RPM. Being powered by the USB is a big plus, as I can just throw it in a briefcase and carry it around without having to fumble with a power cord. I can imagine some cheap hardware not having enough power capacity available on a USB port to reliably power it, but this hasn't happened to me yet in literally hundreds of computers I have connected it to. Even the USB3 port on a Linksys WRT1900ACS router had no problem with it (but that is a beefy router, YMMV with cheaper routers). It also runs essentially silent, even when spinning up or under heavy load.
Cons: It's my job to find fault with the hardware I'm sent, but this is one of those cases where it was very hard to do. Considering the severe enterprise-level demands I have placed on this drive without a single problem, how can I complain? The best I can offer is that the warranty is disappointing. Doesn't Seagate have more faith in their product than one year?
Overall Review: The price is good, the performance is excellent, and the capacity is as big as one can hope for these days without needing external power. I can't recommend this drive enough for practically any application that calls for easily removable external storage.
Pros: Giant 4 TB capacity Very Small Cool under constant Load ( I bombarded the drive for 96 hours straight and it remained cool the entire time) Reasonable Transfer Speed: 131 Megs/Sec Sturdy Construction of Case Easy to Use Easy to Install Free 200 GB free OneDrive cloud storage for 2 years with registration of the drive.
Cons: There 2 Cons with this device but none are worth taking an EGG off. 1. The Power Cable. The end that connects into back of the unit is a design I cant stand. A normal full size USB would be way way more preferable to the Micro USB/combo cable. I've used similar cables from corsair and they end up not lasting. When you plug it in it can feel flimsy. A full Size USB would be way way more reliable and provide a better longer lasting secure connection to the rear of the BackUp Plus. 2. Like all Mechanical Hard drives this one suffers from the same limitations. If you are moving large Files (movies, zips, large games) you will get about 100-131 Megs/sec would is good for a portable hard drive. But like all mechanical drives once you start to copy ALOT of VERY SMALL files. You will notice the transfer speed drops. 4k/16K file types etc. But seeing how small file transfers are the Achilles heel of all mechanical hard drives I cant dock an egg, for something that all NON-SSD drives suffer from.
Overall Review: The drive came undamaged and well packaged. The packaging is small as well as the drive. I was expecting something bigger for he 4TB capacity but the drive is extremely compact. The chassis of the Backup plus is very Sturdy and well made. First ran HD Tune to test drive. USB3: It topped out at 131 MB/s with an access time of 13.3 ms Very reasonable scores for the capacity of the drive. This drive arrived with good timing. 2 Friends both needed fresh installs (viruses/spyware destroyed their OS's) but before we wipe the drives clean I back up everything from their combined 5 hard drives. Over the coarse of about 5 days I copied roughly 7.7 TB to and from the drive. While I was freshly installing windows and then restoring files (movies, Steam Library, Origin library, Music, etc . The drive remained very cool while under 24/7 operation for that time period. Using my thermal scanner the drive never exceeded 87.5 F. Most spots were about 82-83F just a small hot spot or two at 85.5-87.5. But your could hold the drive and it was never "hot". Which surprised me, considering I was using the drive non stop for 4 days. To get the most from the drive I recommend using a more Modern OS Windows 8.1/10 etc basically an OS that Support GBT file format so you get the most capacity from the drive without needing to partition. The drives software is also easy to use. If you try the Lyve software its easy to since the Backup Plus and your Desktop PC. Overall I was extremely please with the Backup Plus performance, and how cool it remained under constant load. I was also impressed with the size of the Unit. Remembering how 1-3 years ago how much bulkier units that approached the 4TB size were its very nice to see the units are extremely compact, and yet despite the small size the chassis of the unit is sturdy and well made.
