Are there any reasons this shouldn't (or couldn't) be used, by us simple people, in a desktop? And please, answer this question as if you were addressing a 10 year old, without much technical skill. Thanks!

You can use it for simple desktop environment. They won't give you any other performance increase compared to any other 7200rpm hard drive on the market. It's just a boatload of space. Although the only issue I'd see coming out of these drives is if you were to copy a large file; the initial burst will be fast and then the drive will gradually slow down during the transfer. But that's just how that drive works.

How well will these work in a RAID array?

I've got 12 of these in a Synology Rackstation. They seem to be working fine. I haven't done any benchmarking, but I was getting close to nominal throughput over a GigE line for a large data transfer.
