Hello, Can I use this for storage device in my Zbook laptop or is it only for desktop?

I understand that an HP ZBook laptop is a high-end portable PC so they are basically a desktop replacement.  The WD Elements external drive is a general purpose external hard drive that comes formatted for use with Windows (but it could be reformatted for use with another OS).  As Craig stated, it only supports USB hardware electrical interfaces but USB version 2.0 or 3.0 so it will work with most PCs.

Question 2

I purchased one of these hard drives and the power cord seems to have a short. Could you tell me what the specs are for the AC adapter so that I can purchase a replacement?

That is an easy question to figure out.  The AC adapter should have a sticker on it that gives you the info you need.  The one that I am currently looking at says that input is 100 to 240 volts AC.  Output is 12 volts DC 1.5 amps.  Since all AC adapters (that power devices in the US you will be able to use)  What is most important is the output voltage and amp rating.  Most external hard drives work on 12 volt DC power.  Look at the back of the hard drive to confirm.  Above where you plug in the power cord, it should list the input voltage.  The other important thing to know is the DC amps that are needed.  If you need 1.5 amps DC and the adapter only puts out 1.0 amp DC it will not work.
If your adapter does not have a sticker, then I would either go to the WD web site and look at the power specs or if need be call WD.

Can I use this storage device for gaming and install games from steam to it without problems ?

Yes and No. You can use it as a storage device, but I wouldn't recommend it for playing a game from it. This unit has a 5400rpm speed, which creates some lag when accessing it. Recommend 7200rpm  drive...but you would have to pay a few dollars more. A drive for gaming (speed and reliability), my recommendation would be the WD Black series. A 3TB drive (WD3003FZEX) should meet your needs.  WD Black series does make a 6TB drive (you will need your own case), but it costs a bit more. I choose this drive to store my music collection on it. When I access it to play a song, sometimes the drive takes a bit to spin-up before it begins to play it. I did not have this issue with a WD Black 3TB drive that I was using for the same purpose. I went to the 6TB for more space...and took a hit on access speed.

Does the drive have to ability to power off when not in use?

I use a program from Western Digital to "control" my Western Digital Drives. The program (WD Drive Utilities), has a "sleep timer" which allows you to "specify when your drive will go into sleep mode when not in use", but keep in mind that your Windows OS (power settings) might over ride the settings of this WD program. You can download the program from the Western Digital website (search for Western Digital software and firmware downloads), depending upon if you are using Windows OS or Mac OS.

Regarding the WD Elements 6TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive WDBWLG0060HBK-NESN Black.  If movies are download onto this drive can they be found by Plex Media Server and then streamed onto the tv via a PS4?

There are a lot of other considerations about media formats, network configuration, etc. in getting what you described fully setup, but as a basic matter, yes, this HD can absolutely store movies to be streamed via Plex. It can also be used to store any other type of file that would normally be stored on an HD. I happen to use mine for streaming storing content streamed with Plex, and it works great.

How hard would it be to remove this drive from the case and use it in a docking station?

There appear to be videos on youtube on how to do this if you search by model. I would recommend keeping everything in the event you ever need to use the warranty, which I assume would require it to be in the original enclosure.

Is this drive usable when plugged into my wifi router's USB port, and if so, what could you do with it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can connect it to your router's USB port.  if it is one of WD's "My Cloud" drives (e.g.; the drive has preloaded software), you can use it as your own Personal Cloud - and thus avoid transferring your sensitive data from any of your wifi-connected devices to third party Clouds (Microsoft, Google, Apple, et al).  Otherwise, you can use it to manually back-up your device(s) with WD's preloaded backup software (which, I believe is a "barebones" Acronis backup app, AKA; the best backup app available, as far as I'm concerned).  I currently have 5 external WD drives running on my system (multiple devices and OS's) and have always found WD drives to be extremely reliable.  Regarding your question, "What can you do with it?" - Answer; you can do just about anything that you would normally do with an internal drive - and with USB 3.0, transfer rates are exceptionally fast (as compared to USB 2.0). Is the drive inside a 3.5" or 2.5"? Is it 7200 RPM or 5400 RPM

This is an external drive, specs have 6.5" x 5.3" in the description, so this is obviously a 3.5" enclosed drive;  WD does the "BLUE" drives in these, so my assumption is that this would be a 5400 RPM drive.

Question 10

If I purchased three of these can I remove the drives and put them into a Vantec NAS?  I'm told that sometimes there can be issues if a manufacturer puts firmware on the drive to prevent this.

1) Ask Vanatec about WD Blues.  It might not be Blue inside.  Can't speak about f/w.  $300 risk, but you end up w 3 6Ts if it doesn't work - not hurt too bad.
2) I have 2 NAS [Synology] and only use Reds & Purples - rated for NAS use [Purples not quite...]
3) I'm betting newegg is already 'sold out' of these.  Been here, done that....
