Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKB 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast for a PATA drive. Quiet and runs cool (just warm to the touch after a full format). WD reliability. And -- of course -- lots of space. I am very pleased with the performance of this HD.

Cons: Not much of a down side with this HD. Only gripe: I wish WD would offer a 5 year warranty on all their drives. 3 years is not bad, but 5 would be nice.

Overall Review: I was using a 400 gig seagt PATA 7200.9 for a year (mostly as a bulk storage / backup HD). I replaced it with this WD 500 gig drive for the same purpose (wanted a bit more space). And even though the drives were very close in specs (same size cache, spindle speed etc.), I have to say that I am much more satisfied with this WD. It runs much cooler (the seagt was VERY warm ~ hot to the touch after a format, unlike this WD). And, the WD is definitely faster in overall performance. I noticed faster file transfer and overall better performance. I thought maybe it was just my imagination. Luckily, I ran a few HD benches on the 400 gig before I disconnected it. After running the same tests on this WD (with the same amount of data on the drive), it scored higher overall. If you need a fast, reliable, cool running & quiet PATA with 500 gigs of space, then this is the drive to get!

Pros: Works great. I have mine in an iRocks external USB/Firewire aluminum enclosure, with no fan. I use it for all kinds of data transfers, connected to many different computers, sometimes chugging along for an hour or more. Gets warm but not hot. Not loud. Good price.

Cons: None come to mind - it does what I bought it to do.

Pros: This drive is so quiet compared to the drive it was replacing! I can't hear it over the power supply fan which is relatively quiet to begin with.

Cons: It's not 1TB. ;-)

Overall Review: I may get another one after the tax return comes in.

Pros: Very good hard drive. Instantly recognized by my old Pentioum 4 PC. Problem-free installation. Will buy another one for a friend's PC. Installed Windows XP and Linux Mint on dual boot.

Pros: Bought five of these 500Gb drives for Raid 5 setup (4+spare). They work great for upgrading Buffalo Tera drives. The drives arrived as agreed and well packaged.

Cons: Unfortunately two of the drives died within 48 hrs of boot-up. One got the "click of death" and the other was diagnosed by WD data lifeguard as full of corrupted sectors and beyond repair. I guess the WD Data lifeguard ran out of spare sectors while trying to salvage the drive...

Overall Review: WD Warranty department rocks. They had replacement drives at my doorstep three days after I called them.

Pros: Very easy installation. Works fine and i feel much better now having so much space. I am considering getting another 500GB hardrive total time installing about. 15 minutes (including running the software wizard.

Cons: Software didn't come with package. You have to go to the Western Digital Site and download it. Its under 2nd GENERATION. it wasn't a big deal though
