Dose this drive includes power and data cables?

No.  You will have to furnish the data and power cables.  The data cable usually comes with your motherboard or you can buy one from several vendors (including Newegg) and the power cable usually comes with your power supply unit (PSU).  Newer PSUs usually have SATA drive power cables.  If yours is an older PSU, you can buy a SATA power cable adapter from several vendors (including Newegg) that will let you combine two 4-pin Molex connectors into one SATA connecter for one SATA drive.

Is this as fast as a SSD?

The simple answer is NO, however it is much faster than a standard HD.  If you are looking for something faster but not as expensive as a SSD you should look into the hybrid drives that combine the two technologies.

No, this comes with just the bare drive.  The 6 Gb SATA cable needs to be purchased separately.

Hi, is this compatible with my Qosmio X775-3DV78 laptop?

No. It is a fulll size 5 1/4 HD due to the heat sink. Will normally fit only in desktops or workstation / servers.

If you look at a photo of the drive, the silver center part is an actual laptop sized HD mounted in this giant black heat sink which is full sized. I have 3 of them and I've seriously looked at trying to remove one from the heat sink to install it into my laptop but I'm sure it will lead to overheating issues. They run fast and hot or else WD would offer them as enterprise models for laptops.

You do know that with considering the $229 t0 $300 cost of a velociraptor you are already in the neighborhood of being able to afford a pretty big SSD? I think your laptop will take 2 HD's. Use a almost 300GB SSD for your OS and you can get a 7200RPM 1 TB laptop HD.................

Personally  I have a dual HD laptop and went with 2 750GB Seagate Hybirds. They come with a small SSD built in to a 7200RPM 750GB SATA3. Loads common programs first. Actually seems to be speedier for me. Depending on your hardware and amount of memory you can achieve different results.

Well I hope I helped you. Remember if you ever move your laptop everyone recommends you have a "laptop" HD. They are more protected against jolts and other violent activities and you can even get ones designed for falls.

My review of the velocirator is it's the greatest fastest enterprise HD I've run since SCSI combined with RAMBUS in a workstation. Can not recommend anything else for SATA6 externals doing photo / video processing. You need a fan enclosure for sure.

Will this fit in an Alienware Aurora_R4?

Gary, I have 4 of these HD running. 2 are in my Synology Diskstation and 2 are running in my Gaphics machine. The 2 in the graphics machine have been running non stop for 7 years now. Since I am not familiar with the Alienware Aurora I can only say that they fit just fine in my NZXT Case and the Synology Diskstation.

Are you supposed to remove the plastic covers from the tape when installing the drive into the IcePack?

When I bought this hard drive it was already assembled in the IcePack. Are you saying you received this hard drive separate from the black IcePack, and you have to assemble it together?

Mine was brand new; however, you may find refurbished units under a slightly different Newegg SKU number and for less money.

Be aware that most Newegg drives (including SSD's) do NOT come with SATA or power cables.

Hello Forum:

My motherboard has SATA 3.0Gb/s (SATA II) controllers, not SATA 6.0Gb/s (mobo is ASUS P6T Delux v2). (1) will this drive be backward compatible to a SATA 3.0Gb/s controller, (2) will the slower 3.0Gb/s interface wipe out any speed advantages of this drive compared with my current WD Caviar Black HD? Thanks!

I tried to hook up the velociraptors to my SATA 3.0 and I'm getting slow hard drive reads under windows 7 (like 5.6 on the win 7 ratings) Maybe if u get a SATA 6.0 card u can really use the speed. For me I hardly see any difference over a regular hard drive with this old mb. I think I should have invested in a Solid State Drive instead.

is this compatible with a ps3?

No, This is a 3.5 inch drive. The ps3 takes a 2.5 inch drive.
It is 2.5 without the heat sink, but i would not recommend taking it off and cramming the bare drive in to the small ps3 housing. You will overheat quickly.
You will want to look for a 2.5 inch laptop HDD, or a SSD.
The stock ps3 HDD is 5400 rpm, and more rpm equal more heat, so i personally would choose a SSD, but that depends on your budget.

Does this HD perform well in an external dock?
I use a Bytecc storage dock and sometimes use it as a regular HD for rendering in Poser or Bryce, etc. Long hard renders.
I had one of the docks fry on first use, but the replacement has lasted.

I fits in any standard 3.5" drive bay, but unless your dock is e-sata or USB 3.0 this drive will vastly outperform the dock.
