1 out of 5 eggsWD Red WD10JFCX IntelliPower Sata 6.0, 2.5" NAS HD

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: NONE!!!

Cons: Installed in computer, tried to format, showed quick format , I accepted. While trying to use showed disk errors, corrected by Windows. Went back to format, immediately went quick format, back using, more errors, back to format, this time I forced full format. For a 1 TB HD drive it took little time to format. Went to Computer mode from start button to observe hard drives and noted that HD appeared but without showing storage info but the name was faded as though it were fading out of sight. Turned computer off, then on and disk had disappeared. Went to bios, HD had disappeared. Plugged it into another computer, never appeared in bios nor on computer disc display. Just bought an Orico USB3 external 2 disc/3.5"-2.5" docking station, installed station in a computer, placed 2.5 NAS HD in docking station and nothing. Removed 2.5" NAS HD and installed SATA 3.5" with known partitions in docking station and everything showed up on the HD display. placed 2.5" NAS HD in docking station and all HD data previously displayed DISAPPEARED! With the 3.5" HD running beside the 2.5" NAS HD, nothing, not one HD showed up in the HD display. It sure looks very defective. Supposed to be new, too [11Nov 2014].

Other Thoughts: If I could make this assessment with NO EGGS, I'd do it. Since I'm past the 30 day limit, I must now deal with WD. I'd just like a replacement 'cuz I don't like to give up and what should be a good thing.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Love the Performance

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: I wasn't expecting these hard drives to perform as close to the WD RE4's as they did. These are by far excellent 2.5" drives for a raid system. Excellent read and write speeds

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I didn't understand how "Intellispeed" would work, I thought it was WD's way of saying 5400RPM. They could elaborate a little more on what Intellispeed accomplishes so that die hard WD fans as well as other customers could all understand what speeds to expect. Very fast drive, but the labeling of intellispeed was almost the difference between buying these hard drives and not

1 out of 5 eggsNot a good product.

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: None yet.

Cons: I have used WD drives forever it seems like. Been monkeying with PC's since the days of the 8086. So when I decided to get me a NAS for home use (QNAP TS-451) I opted for these WD Red 1tb drives. I bought 4 of them to run RAID 5. Received the NAS and drives a few weeks ago. Installed them, started setting up the NAS and immediately getting warnings that drive 4 failed SMART testing. In less than 15 minutes it just completely lays down. Pull it and try it in my desktop to check, won't even pick up in BIOS. Filed an RMA with NewEgg and sent it back. Got the replacement a couple of days ago. Loaded it into slot 4 of the NAS last night and let the unit re-sync overnight (was running the 3 other drives on RAID 5). So I get home from work tonight and the status light on my NAS is blinking red. Log into it and now drive 1 is failing SMART Retired_Block_Count. Still running, but this is ridiculous.

Other Thoughts: So I waited to log a review until I got the first drive that failed replaced. After using dozens of their drives over the years, I gave WD a pass on letting one slip out past QA. Then no sooner than I get it replaced and installed, another one is heading south. That combined with what I read in these reviews says WD is slipping up. They are shipping shoddy product. I am going to contact NewEgg and see what they say about this second unit acting up. The first RMA was painless, but at this point, I'm not feeling real confident in the long term viability of these drives.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi there James D, it is unfortunate that you experienced multiple drive issues. Western Digital takes great care in ensuring that all of our drives are in good working condition before they are shipped to our resellers. Please note that there are many factors that can affect the drive integrity before reaching their destination. We stand behind our warranty for the duration of the products provided warranty period, and as such, we are here to support our products regardless of the circumstances. Our goal is to provide world class customer service, and part of that goal in this situation would be to replace your drive, and investigate the cause relating to the products defect.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: quiet,
low power usage,
work

Cons: still a little pricy compaired to 3.5" version

Other Thoughts: I have 4 of these in a raid 0+1 configuration in a corsair 760T case mounted in the four 2.5" "SSD" cages at the front back, giving a useable 1.8_TB redundant (striped and mirrored) array. looks great and opperates how they should

4 eggs cause theres nothing mindblowing about 1TB 2.5" HDD's

2 out of 5 eggsWorked excellently until the head hit the platter.

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: This was purchased as a replacement for a failed laptop hard drive, and It worked quite well for about three months, with fast boot times and quiet operation.

Cons: While installing, there was an odd problem where this drive and the laptop dvd drive would not work at the same time, which I was unable to resolve, and I beleive was a unique problem and not this drive's fault. After about three months of operation, the horrific sound of the drive head scratching the platter heralded the complete loss of the drive and all data. There was no discernable reason for this, and the computer was not even in use at the time. Very dissapointed.

4 out of 5 eggsNice 2nd Hard Drive for Fujitsu T Lifebook

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Fits into a 2.5" removable bay.

Cons: 3 year warranty

Other Thoughts: Running in s XFS Linux storage space environment. Holds Virtual Machines and perform daily disk transfers of 20GB ~ 100GB, quite well. Does not corrupt media files, like the Western Digital AV-25 series under a RAID 5 environment.

2 out of 5 eggsNothing but trouble with LSI controller

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Small. Cooler than 3.5" drives.

Cons: These drives do not appear to be compatible with the most recent LSI controllers. I use 9361 controller and after adding a couple of these 1TB drives get bus reset errors and one of the drives marked as bad. I disconnected drives from LSI and ran WD diagnostic which completed without any errors. Connected drives to LSI and see errors again.

TLER is not adjustable and no information available on the value used by stock firmware.

Eventually I gave up on the idea of using these drives for raided storage and will use two drives for backup stored off-site.

Other Thoughts: I do not understand how drives can be marketed for NAS installation without testing with the most common hardware RAID controller.

I really liked 2.5" form factor as it allows to install 4 drives in 5.25" slot

Most likely these drives will work OK with software RAID.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Will, it is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Hard Drives. It is good to learn that you verify the issue is not a physical disk concern by running diagnostics on your drives. Although WD Red hard drives should work properly with most NAS enclosures, please note there are many different external bridgeboard and enclosure manufacturers, each with their own command sets, levels of compatibility, and technical requirements. Because of this, Western Digital features a list of tested NAS devices compatible with WD Red drives as a basic guide for verified compatibility and support.
To ensure full compatibility and support, we would recommend that you consider verifying the compatibility section at: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810

For hardware-based RAID or NAS enclosures larger than 5-bays, we recommend considering our Datacenter Storage line of disks. Please visit the link below for further information.

2 out of 5 eggsSadly it's failing for me.

This review is from: WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: After first acquiring the Red WD10JFCX late Jan. early Feb, it ran fine. Installed into a Dell Inspiron N5050, the drive took the OS install well and fast. Good drive for the price.

Cons: Sadly, I do have a con about this great HDD. The one I acquired is failing after three months of usage. Ran Defraggler, S.M.A.R.T. scan, and HDD diagnostic tools. The HDD diagnostic tool came back with the result of just over 6,000MB damaged on the drive. After running the test on it, the drive is getting slower and slower. Considered a OS re-install, but by how the drive is acting, it wouldn't do any good.

Other Thoughts: Thank you Western Digital for making such good HDDs, sadly I got a bad one. :-(

Manufacturer Response:

Hello 1armbandit, it is unfortunate that you have experienced a drive failure, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you directly.
