Building PCs out of custom components has been a hobby of mine for many years, and it got me thinking. Some people started doing this just within the last few years, and others (like myself) have been building PCs for decades. So when did you build your first PC?
- I built my first PC in 1999 or earlier (SDRAM era)
- I built my first PC in 2000-2002 (The wildest transition period in PC history)
- I built my first PC in 2003-2005 (DDR era)
- I built my first PC in 2006-2008 (DDR2 era)
- I built my first PC in 2009-2015 (DDR3 era)
- I built my first PC in 2016-2021 (DDR4 era)
- I built my first PC in 2022 or later (DDR5 era)
Note, even if your PC had a different type of RAM than what’s listed for the year, base your answer on the year when you built it! For instance, if you built your first PC with Socket AM4 last year, then you should still select 2022 or later.

If you haven’t built your own PC, what are the obstacles to it?
