Network cameras
These cameras make for a great low budget security tool. Some of these cameras come with software that can send you emails or live video directly to your smartphone, so you’ll always feel safe.
Wired cameras
These are great. They are close to your network and secured through a wired connection. Since wired speeds are generally faster, these tend to have the clearest images or video.
Wireless Cameras
These can be placed anywhere there’s power nearby, fewer wires means more placement flexibility. It also means someone would have a harder time finding out where your cameras are sending images—more security.
Software
Blue Iris allows me to manage a ton of cameras–you can even use webcams! Set zones that trigger recordings, either in picture or video format. This way trees and pets are filtered out, which reduces false alarms.
Trail Cams
While not as common, these are great cameras you can set and forget. These come with powerful batteries and are meant to capture motion outside. Depending on the camera, they also have night vision so you can catch night-time movement, too. The nice thing is they work for months on end. Perfect for your summer home, vacation rental or anyplace you can’t be 24-7. You still know there is a trustful eye on your property. Just remember, these can be stolen too, so secure them accordingly.
Go on the offensive
Have trespassers crossing your yard? Well I have three words for you: Motion activated sprinklers. These anti-crow sprinkler systems work just as well at spraying other pests with water. Nothing says get off my lawn better than getting sprayed with water. They also work great on other threats. Motion activated sprinklers are perfect when paired with cameras to capture those surprising moments and save them for prosperity
Insecurity
Keep in mind there is no perfect security solution. Whether its locked doors or laser traps, all security can be defeated. But it’s always good to be prepared. The more ways you secure your home, the harder it is to be robbed. Chances are the criminal will skip your home for an easier target or maybe just get wet trying.
