Simple to install, relatively fast and making my life easier than it was with too many external drives on the go.

Keeping in line with Western Digital’s other newer drives, this one is a lot quieter in terms of vibration. Speeds are pretty decent overall and on par with what I would expect (see other for speeds). Cheaper than the Red drives with most of the benefits. These drives don’t appear to experience the same slow spin-up that some full on NAS drives do. 1TB drives are extremely cheap these days so you can buy a bucket load of them compared to even a few years ago.

Drive storage is VERY important to me. I have two large media servers both with Gigabyte 990FXA UD7 MBs and Seagate 4 TB drives, Both case will hold 10 HHDs plus a boot drive (SSD) and one Blu-ray - HD-DVD 0 DVD CD digital reader burner. I have 5 Seagate 4 TB HHDs with another already purchased to add to each one soon. I store Music, audio books, TV series and movies. Both servers have matched copies of all my media. I have been using ONLY Seagate 4TB drives - some retail boxes and some OEM drives with no problems and 100% satisfaction. I also have four Seagate 4TB portable USB drives for additional backups and for use when traveling. In the past I also used drives by many other vendors with mixed results but mostly good. The reason I buy these Seagate drives is their SLOW rotation speed, this keeps the drive cooler and this is very important with so many drives stacked together. I only format with GPT partition tuype in Windows (XP - Win 10) and I set my HHD drive sleep limit to 5 minutes so the drives close down quickly when not being used. So far NO failures or problems doing this other than an occasional wait for a drive to spin up when selected - not a problem for me to wait a few seconds to setup a movies to watch for several hours or music to play for days at a time in the back ground. This is working so well for me that I will not stop until each PC Media server has 10 4TB drives installed. I usually wait for a NewEgg sale and buy two at a time (like my recent purchase). If you have read this review this far you may be wonder why so many other have trouble with their large SATA drives, perhaps I am just lucky or maybe my setup which includes high power energy supplies (two 750 watts PS paired in one server and a single 850 watt PS in the other) super large cases and many fans. I use AMD FX 4150 and 4350 CPUs, high quality RAM and Video adapters just fast enough to do the HD movies and music so as not to add any more heat to the system than needed - I do not play any games on these machines (OK maybe Solitaire now and then). If yo are wondering what PC case I like - my most recent build uses an Antecc 1200, the older one is a CM STACKER with two power supplies - both are very big, heavy and roomy cases that have no limitations on any hardware I might add later including H20 coolers, but so far I am air cooled only as the FX processor i use while very fast do not require expensive or complicated coolers - been running my FX 4150 on stock AMD cooler for a few years now, no problems with noise or cooling.

I am using this as my primary genomic dataset decompression/analysis/recompression drive. It replaced the competitor’s highest-end consumer-grade performance hard drive, which also has a five year warranty. Sustained writes of 170MB/s are amongst the highest I’ve seen from a single (mechanical/platter-based) hard drive. For comparison, the drive it replaced topped out at 150MB/s according to my testing. This Seagate drive also has slightly lower latencies than the drive it replaced. At idle it pulls a few watts less than the drive it replaced. Finally, it is noticeably quieter (though in an enterprise setting this is irrelevant).

1. I've test this device with as many as eight security cameras concurrently with no issues. I have also tested the drive on a three tuner DVR (watching one recorded video, while recording three other channels). 2. Measured performance (Sequential Read/Verify): Outside Diameter (nearly empty): 185 MB/sec. Middle Diameter (half full): 160 MB/sec. Inside Diameter (nearly full): 95 MB/sec. Slightly (5 MB/sec) slower than the WD80PURZ.

Purchased 4 drives, getting great performance on them for spinning drives. GoHardDrive has great support if you do run into an issue, and took care of any problems quickly. 5 year warranty on refurbished drives is great as well. Excellent cost per TB.
