First impression after starting it on a dock this morning is: What a speedy beast! My fist 8088 PC had a seagate 20MB doing 125 kB/s from an MFM controller. Took 2.5 hours for low-level then DOS format The WD takes less than a day to fill. Wonder what The SAS version does. And got 2 with a 5 year warranty for less than twice the price per TB of 12 unwarrantied 3TB HGST K4000 being auctioned today. Conditional to lasting performance this is a Super Deal! At room temperature they runs the 220 MB/s R/W test at 45 C cool! Since they are 7200 RPM they will probably be OK as spares for my 8*18 TB raid array.

I ordered the drive from new egg but it arrived dead on arrival as confirmed by my computer technician and in writing by the Computer Service Business. First I called Seagate .... biggest run around in my life. They wanted me to go back to the store and have them take pictures of it in the drive (it was already removed. I said i would not pay to do that. They said it's policy. I called New Egg .... CUSTOMER SERVICE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE COOPERTIVE. What a great company to do business with. Yes, drives can arrive bad, but please, Seagate, don't have me spend hundreds of dollars trying to constantly install and reinstall it. Learn to trust the consumer. BOTTOM LINE .... stick with New Egg

Bought the F4-424 and D4-320 to replace my DS-413 and AS1004T, took me about 3 days to move all drives from the Synology and Asustor to Terramaster. (not going to mention how to transfer all the files). Anyway, one traid volume 1 with F4-424 and another traid volume 2 with D4-320, they work fine. By the way F4-424 is a very good Plex server.

Seagate claims it's OptiCache technology boosts overall performance by as much as 45%. And they are right. I was fortunate enough to receive two of these drives, and as luck would have it I run a RAID1. I formatted both drives. Then using GSmartControl I ran smart tests on the drives. They both passed the short and conveyance tests. Smart table reported no errors logged and zero hours on the drive so these are brand new. I connected one of the drives to an unused SATA III port and transferred a huge 84GB folder from my Western Digital 500GB drives (RAID1) to the Seagate. This transfer took 21 minutes with a peak transfer rate of 79.5MB/sec. For most of the transfer the speeds floated around the 60's. I then quick formatted the Seagate, removed one of the WD's and put the Seagate in it's place. Using Intel's RST I easily rebuilt my RAID1 on to the Seagate. RAID rebuilt time was 1hr 25min. I then removed the second WD and connected the second Seagate as a stand alone drive. I then transferred the same 84GB folder to Seagate to Seagate. Transfer speed dramatically increased to a peak of 136MB/sec and a continuous rate that hovered in the 120's. Total time of transfer dropped to 11 minutes. Given the transfer time dropped from 21 minutes down to 11 minutes does substantiate their 45% performance boost. Quick formatting the second drive then adding it to its clone to rebuild the RAID took 1hr 16min. A nominal decrease of 9 minutes. Another area where the 64MB cache really stood out was with file downloads. During this entire process the drives were whisper quiet, unlike the 'low rumble' I frequently hear from my WD's when encountering a heavy amount of read/writes. This is an excellent drive for use as either your main drive or a storage backup.

perfect for NAS. I don't really need the AI function in the drives they sit in a UNIFI protect set up. I have the 24TB one in my home protect set up and initially it was loud, but it has become more quite since it finished it originally set up. I have 8 of the 8TB drives with no issues. 2 are cold spares. when they go in I'll order 2 more. I take the drives that are out of warranty and typically put them in our 3rd tier backup NAS systems and they seem to live forever. Technically out of "service life" but that doesn't mean I take them offline, I stick them into a lower use environment to live out their days storing old accounting stuff. Nothing as exciting as VIDEO

* Benchmarking this drive using HD Tune Pro showed excellent results. 7,200RPM platter speeds combined with high areal density helps give it great throughput and access times. Here are some benchmark numbers compared to other drives in the same system of mine to compare to: System: Intel 3.8GHz CPU, Asus Rampage Extreme III mobo, 6Gb Ram Seagate ST6000NM0024 Enterprise drive: (review drive) Average read speed: 164.9 MB/s Access time: 11.7ms Western Digital Green WD40EZRX 4tb drive: Average read speed: 113.9 MB/s Access time: 17.0ms Samsung EcoGreen HD103SI 1tb drive: Average read speed: 84.8 MB/s Access time: 21.5ms Crucial C300 256gb Solid State Drive: (Even old SSDs smoke the benchmarks) Average read speed: 223.8 MB/s Access Time: 0.157ms Remember that comparing components using the same system and benchmark is necessary to get an accurate feel for an item’s performance. You will see numerous benchmark results by various users, but comparing their results to other user’s results can be seriously deceptive. It’s like they teach in the 5th grade, the scientific method is the only way to go. * The drive uses the SATA III 6Gb/s interface, a 128 MB cache, and “Power Choice Technology”. “PowerChoice technology improves on earlier technology and allows for energy-saving during periods of command inactivity, allowing for greater power reductions. As idle time increases, the power-saving benefits also increase, and the drives will still quickly respond to commands even after long idling periods. In addition, PowerChoice technology supports four customizable modes to give businesses significantly more control of power usage by allowing for up to a 54% reduction in the amount of energy used.” * Unlike two of the bottom mounting screws, all of the side mounting screws are in standard locations, so if you mount in this fashion, or use quick release side mounts for example, you are good to go. * This is the largest single internal drive solution available on the consumer market at the moment. Its formatted capacity is 6001,039,241,216 bytes (5.45TB) as formatted in NTFS under Windows 7. * I’m using this drive as my primary backup drive for my entire network. It seems to have all the makings to fill this purpose with excellence. They are also built to perform strongly in Raid arrays and installed into Network Attached Storage devices. * The drive is just as quiet as my current quietest platter drive. * Newegg packaging has become even better for hard drives. This came in a neat air bag style package that feels much more protective against package carrier bumps and bruises.

2 out of 2 drives arrived and tested OK. Crystal DiskMark says ~240MB/sec read, 220MB/sec write with the two drives in RAID 0.
