Don't think L4D, think Borderlands

-Fun, intuitive fighting system. Melee combat feels extremely satisfying. The diversity of weapons and combat techniques coupled with the different zombie types ensures that no two encounters will be quite the same.
-A surprisingly moving story. While many FPS games nowadays have a plot no deeper than "aim at things until they die", Dead Island delivers a deep and chilling tale, bit by bit as you progress. It's been a long time since a game has made me feel compassionate toward its characters.
-Huge, gorgeous environments. There's much more than the island resort setting, such as a ravaged city and a jungle.
-Weapon modification is challenging and rewarding. Mod blueprints are generally rare, so when you get one you know you earned it. Collecting the necessary items will be somewhat difficult, but the end result is always powerful.
-Skill trees allow you to enhance your character's abilities and adapt them to your play style, ensuring that your character is YOUR character.
-Steamw

-Buggy as all hell, even after patches. Expect to lose weapons occasionally, have quests glitch up or revert progress, et cetera.
-Not terribly well-optimized, a lot of features you can disable without much of a visual impact to gain a fair performance boost.*
-More of a personal preference issue here, but I think melee weapons wear out far too quickly. An iron mace shouldn't crumble to pieces after thirty zombies. Not that you won't have the cash to repair your weapons (and you can even get perks to increase durability further), I'm just saying I'd like them to last a bit longer.
-Another personal preference, but I feel that the facial animations don't properly convey the emotion of these characters. One woman had lost her sister, her voice frantic and scattered, but her face showed a sort of blank disinterest, as she looked around the room for nothing in particular. Not a major thing, but definitely a con.

I bought two of these when they were $10 here at Newegg, and I can't say I'm displeased with the purchase. If the opportunity arises, I'm buying two more at that price point and having a Dead Island party with three friends, I like the game that much. At full retail price I'm not so sure I would be in for one, it is very much an unpolished game. At a severe discount, however, you would be doing yourself a disservice by not getting this game. If the price drops again, by all means, jump on it. As I said in the review title, if you go into Dead Island expecting Left 4 Dead, you will most likely be disappointed, you can go hours without finding a single gun (though they are much more common outside the resort). If you expect something more like Borderlands with a melee focus, I feel you'll be pleasantly surprised, as I was.

*Google "Dead Island helper" to find an extremely useful (and VAC-safe) configuration tool, great for getting that performance boost and other important tweaks/fixe
